Nanoenergetics are defined as a class of nanomaterials that possess the ability to release energy in certain situations. These properties have been studied and deepened in recent years, so much so that nanoenergetics have been introduced into the use of the weapons industry, among others. It is therefore an emerging reality that deserves attention with regard to potential harmful effects on human and environmental health.

Background: Human memory NK cells represent a heterogeneous CD56 population that expands and persists in human cytomegalovirus (HCMV)-seropositive healthy individuals. They are characterized by the preferential, not fully overlapping, expression of NKG2C (activating receptor for HLA-E) and CD57 maturation marker, and by the lack of FcεRIγ adaptor chain. Hyperresponsiveness to Fcγ receptor IIIA (CD16) engagement represents the distinctive functional signature of memory NK cells.

Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is a very common and troublesome gastrointestinal side effect following the use of opioids. Despite existing international guidelines, OIC is largely underdiagnosed and undertreated. ECHO OIC is a European project designed to improve the diagnosis and management of OIC at the primary care level.

: Vaccination is one of the most effective public health interventions, preventing millions of deaths globally each year. However, vaccine hesitancy, driven by misinformation and reduced disease risk perception, has led to declining vaccination rates and the resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) in Europe. In response to this, countries have implemented various strategies, including mandatory and recommended vaccination programs.

Background: Microglia play a crucial role in brain development and repair by facilitating processes such as synaptic pruning and debris clearance. They can be activated in response to various stimuli, leading to either pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory responses associated with specific metabolic alterations. The imbalances between microglia activation states contribute to chronic neuroinflammation, a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases.

Purpose: In absence of nodal metastases or aggressive features, thyroid lobectomy (TL) should be preferred over total thyroidectomy (TT) for 1-4 cm unifocal, papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, occult, despite non-microscopic (≥2 mm), nodal metastases may be present in clinically node-negative (cN0) PTC.
Methods: Among 4216 thyroidectomies for malignancy (2014-2023), 110 TL plus ipsilateral central neck dissection (I-CND) were scheduled for unifocal cT1b/small cT2 (≤3 cm) cN0 PTCs.

With the large volume of data coming from implemented technologies and monitoring systems, intensive care units (ICUs) represent a key area for artificial intelligence (AI) application. Despite the last decade has been marked by studies focused on the use of AI in medicine, its application in mechanical ventilation management is still limited. Optimizing mechanical ventilation is a complex and high-stake intervention, which requires a deep understanding of respiratory pathophysiology.

The cyclin-dependent kinases 12 (CDK12) and 13 (CDK13) govern several steps of gene expression, including transcription, RNA processing and translation. The main target of CDK12/13 is the serine 2 residue of the carboxy-terminal domain of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII), thus influencing the directionality, elongation rate and processivity of the enzyme. The CDK12/13-dependent regulation of RNAPII activity influences the expression of selected target genes with important functional roles in the proliferation and viability of all eukaryotic cells.

The finely tuned regulation of mitochondria activity is essential for proper brain development. Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), the leading cause of inherited intellectual disability, is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which mitochondrial dysfunction has been increasingly implicated. This study investigates the role of Glycogen Synthase Kinase 3β (GSK3β) in FXS.

The present review summarizes the findings from human histological studies conducted over the past 20 years at the University of Guarulhos, Brazil, examining the impact of various implant surface topographies and smoking on peri-implant bone response. Seven different implant surfaces were evaluated in 90 partially or completely edentulous individuals using a total of 123 micro-implants. Histometric parameters, including bone-implant contact (BIC%), bone area within the threads (BA%), and bone density (BD), were assessed after an 8-week healing period.

While recent randomized controlled trials (RCT) have suggested superior overall survival (OS) outcomes with segmentectomy over lobectomy, questions remain regarding the comparability of these surgical procedures for treating early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthetize existing evidence and to compare the survival outcomes observed for stage IA NSCLC following segmentectomy or lobectomy. 40 studies (38 observational, 2 RCTs) encompassing 103,926 patients were analyzed.

Background/objectives: Perineal injuries, including episiotomies and spontaneous tears, are common complications during childbirth, often leading to significant discomfort and prolonged recovery for women. This retrospective observational cohort study aimed to explore the relationship between antenatal anovaginal distance (AVD) and the incidence of perineal injuries in a cohort of pregnant women evaluated for pelvic floor health at 28 to 32 weeks of gestation.
Methods: Conducted at the University Hospital of Padua over 18 months, the study included 416 women who underwent vaginal delivery at term.

Background: Healthcare-associated infections are infections that patients acquire during hospitalization or while receiving healthcare in other facilities. They represent the most frequent negative outcome in healthcare, can be entirely prevented, and pose a burden in terms of financial and human costs. With the development of new AI and ML algorithms, hospitals could develop new and automated surveillance and prevention models for HAIs, leading to improved patient safety.

Sleep quality significantly impacts individuals' overall health, especially in older adults. Older adults often face comorbid conditions, polypharmacy (the intake of five or more medications per day), and medication non-adherence, which are common among those with sleep disorders. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the relationship between sleep quality and medication adherence in older adults and to describe the measuring instruments used.
