Oral-Gut-Estrobolome Axis May Exert a Selective Impact on Oral Cancer.

J Dent Res

May 2024

Department of Neurosciences, Reproductive and Odontostomatological Sciences, University of Naples "Federico II" Naples, Italy.

A subset of bacterial species that holds genes encoding for β-glucuronidase and β-galactosidase, enzymes involved in the metabolism of conjugated estrogens, is called the "estrobolome." There is an emerging interest embracing this concept, as it may exert a selective impact on a number of pathologies, including oral cancer. Although the estrobolome bacteria are typically part of the gut microbiota, recent experimental pieces of evidence have suggested a crosstalk among oral and gut microbiota.

Programmed DNA double-strand break (DSB) formation is a crucial feature of meiosis in most organisms. DSBs initiate recombination-mediated linking of homologous chromosomes, which enables correct chromosome segregation in meiosis. DSBs are generated on chromosome axes by heterooligomeric focal clusters of DSB-factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Mental disorders are a major global health issue, with depression projected to be the leading contributor to the disease burden by 2030, especially worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on mental health in adolescents.
  • The pandemic has led to long-term effects known as "long-COVID," which include cognitive and psychological symptoms linked to neuroinflammation caused by widespread inflammation.
  • Research suggests that the endocannabinoid system (ECS), particularly through the cannabinoid type-2 receptor (CB2R), may offer new treatment options for depression and anxiety, with a focus on β-caryophyllene (BCP) for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.

Focal adhesion plaques (FAPs) play an important role in the communication between cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) and in cells' migration. FAPs are macromolecular complexes made by different proteins which also interact with matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Because of these fundamental properties, FAPs and MMPs are also involved in cancer cells' invasion and in the metastatic cascade.

The fear of missing sepsis episodes in neonates frequently leads to indiscriminate use of antibiotics, and prescription program optimization is suggested for reducing this inappropriate usage. While different authors have studied how to reduce antibiotic overprescription in the case of early onset sepsis episodes, with different approaches being available, less is known about late-onset sepsis episodes. Biomarkers (such as C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, interleukin-6 and 8, and presepsin) can play a crucial role in the prompt diagnosis of late-onset sepsis, but their role in antimicrobial stewardship should be further studied, given that different factors can influence their levels and newborns can be subjected to prolonged therapy if their levels are expected to return to zero.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is defined as the combination of polycystic morphology, hyperandrogenism, and ovulatory disruption; this heterogeneity presents a conundrum for the medical community. The Rotterdam criteria have governed the diagnosis of PCOS, separating the patient cohort into four distinct phenotypes. It has been suggested that the lone normoandrogenic phenotype, so-called phenotype D, should not be classified as a PCOS subtype, with phenotypes A, B, and C displaying a hyperandrogenic biochemical and clinical profile thought to be characteristic of PCOS.
