It is unclear how increasing body mass index (BMI) influences risk of cancer in young women. We used data from the Medical Birth, Patient and Cause of Death registers collected between 1982 and 2014 to determine the risk of obesity-related cancer types, breast cancer, all cancer and cancer-related death in relation to BMI in 1,386,725 women, aged between 18 and 45 years, in Sweden. During a median follow-up of 16.

Article Synopsis
  • Fatty liver disease (FLD) is increasingly common, particularly in women, with the PNPLA3 p.I148M genetic variant significantly influencing its development.
  • Research reveals a strong interaction between female sex and the PNPLA3 variant, leading to more severe FLD outcomes, especially after menopause.
  • The study found that estrogen enhances PNPLA3 expression, linking hormonal changes to the exacerbation of FLD in at-risk women, suggesting that targeting this pathway could be a therapeutic strategy.

We are developing a transmission-based probe for point-of-care assessment of vertebrae strength needed for fabricating the instrumentation used in supporting the spinal column during spinal fusion surgery. The device is based on a transmission probe whereby thin coaxial probes are inserted into the small canals through the pedicles and into the vertebrae, and a broad band signal is transmitted from one probe to the other across the bone tissue. Simultaneously, a machine vision scheme has been developed to measure the separation distance between the probe tips while they are inserted into the vertebrae.

Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, The Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Blå Stråket 15, Sahlgrenska Hospital, 405 30, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized pathologically by amyloid β (Aβ)-containing plaques. Generation of Aβ from amyloid precursor protein (APP) by two enzymes, β- and γ-secretase, has therefore been in the AD research spotlight for decades. Despite this, how the physical interaction of APP with the secretases influences APP processing is not fully understood.

Background: Few studies compared lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) and standard double pigtail plastic stents (PS) for the endoscopic drainage of pancreatic walled-off necrosis (WON). Albeit sometimes large, previously described cohorts display considerable heterogeneity and often pooled together data from several centers, involving multiple operators and techniques. Moreover, they often lack a control group for the comparison of outcomes.

Mycophenolic acid (MPA) is a potent immunosuppressive agent used in solid organ transplantation. MPA exhibits large interindividual variation in dose-normalized plasma concentrations but is nevertheless usually prescribed as a fixed dose without use of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). Data on the effect of corticosteroid (CS) treatment on MPA concentrations during concomitant tacrolimus treatment remains sparse.

Background: Patients with colorectal cancer were examined to determine (1) whether elevated carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels, either before treatment or after surgery, was associated with an increased risk of overall or colorectal cancer-specific mortality or recurrence, and (2) whether high intensity follow-up would benefit those patients.

Materials And Methods: Post-hoc analysis based on 2509 patients that underwent surgery for colorectal cancer, stage II or III, in the COLOFOL randomized trial with 5-year follow-up. Serum CEA levels were ascertained before treatment and one month after surgery.

BMP-3 Promotes Matrix Production in Co-cultured Stem Cells and Disc Cells from Low Back Pain Patients.

Tissue Eng Part A

January 2020

Lundberg Laboratory for Orthopeadic Research, Department of Orthopedics, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Low back pain is one of the most common disorders and believed to be due to intervertebral disc degeneration. Transplantation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) is suggested as potential treatment option. Bone morphogenetic growth factor 3 (BMP-3) promotes chondrogenesis and is proven effective in enhancing chondrogenesis in hMSCs pretreated with interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) in hydrogel model.

November 2019

Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine Unit, Department of Translational Medicine, Lund University, Lund, Sweden.

Background: Accumulation of activated neutrophilic leucocytes is known to increase uptake of F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( F-FDG) into lung tissue. Available evidence suggests that smokers and subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have neutrophilic inflammation in peripheral airways. The aim of this study was to examine whether current smokers have higher lung tissue uptake of F-FDG than never-smokers when correcting for air fraction of the lungs.

Telomere Function and the G-Quadruplex Formation are Regulated by hnRNP U.

Cells

April 2019

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Institute of Biomedicine, University of Gothenburg, SE-40530 Gothenburg, Sweden.

We examine the role of the heterogenous ribonucleoprotein U (hnRNP U) as a G-quadruplex binding protein in human cell lines. Hypothesizing that hnRNP U is associated with telomeres, we investigate what other telomere-related functions it may have. Telomeric G-quadruplexes have been fully characterized in vitro, but until now no clear evidence of their function or in vivo interactions with proteins has been revealed in mammalian cells.
