Background: With the implementation of the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the publication of the metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) nomenclature in 2020, it is important to establish consensus for the coding of MAFLD in ICD-11. This will inform subsequent revisions of ICD-11.
Methods: Using the Qualtrics XM and WJX platforms, questionnaires were sent online to MAFLD-ICD-11 coding collaborators, authors of papers, and relevant association members.

It is unclear how increasing body mass index (BMI) influences risk of cancer in young women. We used data from the Medical Birth, Patient and Cause of Death registers collected between 1982 and 2014 to determine the risk of obesity-related cancer types, breast cancer, all cancer and cancer-related death in relation to BMI in 1,386,725 women, aged between 18 and 45 years, in Sweden. During a median follow-up of 16.

We are developing a transmission-based probe for point-of-care assessment of vertebrae strength needed for fabricating the instrumentation used in supporting the spinal column during spinal fusion surgery. The device is based on a transmission probe whereby thin coaxial probes are inserted into the small canals through the pedicles and into the vertebrae, and a broad band signal is transmitted from one probe to the other across the bone tissue. Simultaneously, a machine vision scheme has been developed to measure the separation distance between the probe tips while they are inserted into the vertebrae.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized pathologically by amyloid β (Aβ)-containing plaques. Generation of Aβ from amyloid precursor protein (APP) by two enzymes, β- and γ-secretase, has therefore been in the AD research spotlight for decades. Despite this, how the physical interaction of APP with the secretases influences APP processing is not fully understood.

Background: Outcome after colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) resection has improved over time, despite increased resection rates. Hence, it's crucial to identify all patients possible to treat with curative intent. The objectives of this study were to map recurrence pattern, treatment strategy and survival depending on treatment and follow-up strategy.

Background: Few studies compared lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) and standard double pigtail plastic stents (PS) for the endoscopic drainage of pancreatic walled-off necrosis (WON). Albeit sometimes large, previously described cohorts display considerable heterogeneity and often pooled together data from several centers, involving multiple operators and techniques. Moreover, they often lack a control group for the comparison of outcomes.

Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between body mass index (BMI) in young women, using weight early in pregnancy as a proxy for pre-pregnancy weight, and risk for early cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality.
Methods And Results: In this prospective, registry-based study, we used weight data in early pregnancy from women, registered in the Swedish Medical Birth Registry, and who gave birth between 1982 and 2014 (n = 1,495,499; median age 28.3 years).

Background: Registries and data sources contain information that can be used on an ongoing basis to improve quality of care and outcomes of people with diabetes. As a specific task of the EU Bridge Health project, we carried out a survey of diabetes-related data sources in Europe.
Objectives: We aimed to report on the organization of different sources of diabetes information, including their governance, information infrastructure and dissemination strategies for quality control, service planning, public health, policy and research.

Mycophenolic acid (MPA) is a potent immunosuppressive agent used in solid organ transplantation. MPA exhibits large interindividual variation in dose-normalized plasma concentrations but is nevertheless usually prescribed as a fixed dose without use of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). Data on the effect of corticosteroid (CS) treatment on MPA concentrations during concomitant tacrolimus treatment remains sparse.

Background: Patients with colorectal cancer were examined to determine (1) whether elevated carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels, either before treatment or after surgery, was associated with an increased risk of overall or colorectal cancer-specific mortality or recurrence, and (2) whether high intensity follow-up would benefit those patients.
Materials And Methods: Post-hoc analysis based on 2509 patients that underwent surgery for colorectal cancer, stage II or III, in the COLOFOL randomized trial with 5-year follow-up. Serum CEA levels were ascertained before treatment and one month after surgery.

The prevalence of gallstones is 20 % making it one of the most common causes for admissions to surgical wards. It seems that admissions and operations for gallstone disease are increasing. Gallstones are formed in the gallbladder but can also form in the biliary tree and most are made of cholesterol which is absorbed from the diet.

Background: Change in bowel habit as a sole alarm symptom for colorectal cancer is disputed.
Objective: We investigated the diagnostic value of change in bowel habit for colorectal cancer, particularly as a single symptom and within different age groups.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study examined colorectal cancer fast track referrals and outcomes across four Swedish hospitals (April 2016-May 2017).

Background: Uterus transplantation is an emerging surgical innovation offering the option of genetic and gestational motherhood to women with absolute uterine factor infertility. More than 15 centres worldwide have now commenced clinical trials, but the procedure has not been performed in Australia.
Aim: To explore the awareness, attitudes and perceptions regarding uterus transplantation among Australian women with absolute uterine infertility.

Low back pain is one of the most common disorders and believed to be due to intervertebral disc degeneration. Transplantation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) is suggested as potential treatment option. Bone morphogenetic growth factor 3 (BMP-3) promotes chondrogenesis and is proven effective in enhancing chondrogenesis in hMSCs pretreated with interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) in hydrogel model.

Background: Accumulation of activated neutrophilic leucocytes is known to increase uptake of F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( F-FDG) into lung tissue. Available evidence suggests that smokers and subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have neutrophilic inflammation in peripheral airways. The aim of this study was to examine whether current smokers have higher lung tissue uptake of F-FDG than never-smokers when correcting for air fraction of the lungs.

Low back pain is a major health issue and one main cause to this condition is believed to be intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. Stem cell therapy for degenerated discs using mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) has been suggested. The aim of the study was to investigate the presence and distribution pattern of autologous MSCs transplanted into degenerated IVDs in patients and explanted posttransplantation.

We examine the role of the heterogenous ribonucleoprotein U (hnRNP U) as a G-quadruplex binding protein in human cell lines. Hypothesizing that hnRNP U is associated with telomeres, we investigate what other telomere-related functions it may have. Telomeric G-quadruplexes have been fully characterized in vitro, but until now no clear evidence of their function or in vivo interactions with proteins has been revealed in mammalian cells.

The development of an injectable biomaterial that supports cell survival and maintains or promotes nucleus pulposus (NP) phenotype could aid delivery of cells to degenerated NPs causing low back pain. Mesenchymal cells were loaded and grown in a synthetic peptide gel, PuraMatrix. Cells were observed within the gels over 0-28 days, and accumulation of glycosaminoglycans were detected by histological staining.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that is treated with both pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods. The treatment works well for patients who are knowledgeable about their disease and situation. However, this may be different for others as, among other things, it depends on how well informed the patients are in relation to their condition.
