The systemic inflammatory response is associated with tumor promotion and suppression. Accumulating evidence shows that peripheral blood markers of inflammatory response predict clinical outcomes in various human cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic relevance of the inflammation-based biomarkers in colorectal cancer (CRC).

Cystoscopy revealed bladder tumor near the right ureteral orifice, and transurethral resection demonstrated high grade pT1 urothelial carcinoma. The patient was started on intravesical BCG instillation therapy at a dose of 81 mg weekly for 8 weeks without fever.

Background: Platelets play an important role in myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke events, but whether platelet aggregability is related to early stage arteriosclerosis remains unclear.

Methods: We used a novel platelet counting system which makes it possible to detect spontaneous platelet aggregation, to evaluate the relationship between platelet aggregability and carotid artery arteriosclerosis in 125 outpatients with primary hypertension (46-73 years old: 65 men, 60 women). All subjects underwent carotid artery ultrasonography to determine whether plaque was present and to estimate intima-media thickness.

The significance of phrenic nerve block was studied in the anesthetic management of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Right phrenic nerve block with 1% mepivacaine 10 ml was performed after the patients were epidurally catheterized and anesthetized with isoflurane and nitrous oxide in oxygen. Intraoperative anesthetic requirement and postoperative shoulder pain incidence in patients with this block were compared with those in patients without block.

December 1993

Department of Psychiatry, Sagamidai Hospital, Sagami, Japan.

Sleep disturbance of patients with end-stage renal disease was examined in a sample of 127 patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) therapy. The results indicate that sleep disturbance occurs quite often. Especially, there was a high incidence of sleep disturbance with prolonged HD therapy and with advancing age, and that somatic complications due to long-term HD indirectly influence sleep disturbance.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) has been established as noninvasive treatment of choice for the great majority of upper urinary tract stones. However the management of staghorn stones in solitary kidney still deserves special consideration. We reviewed retrospectively 11 patients with staghorn stones in solitary kidney treated mainly with the Dornier HM-3 lithotripter during the period between December 1984 and December 1989 at the Sagamidai Hospital.
