Background: Although osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent form of arthritis, there is still no effective treatment capable of combining immunomodulatory effects with cartilage repair. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) represent a promising new generation of cell-free therapies for OA. Blood-derived products, including plasma, are an easily available and abundant source of EVs with anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties.

Designing well-defined magnetic nanomaterials is crucial for various applications, and it demands a comprehensive understanding of their magnetic properties at the microscopic level. In this study, we investigate the contributions to the total anisotropy of Mn/Co mixed spinel nanoparticles. By employing neutron measurements sensitive to the spatially resolved surface anisotropy with sub-Å space resolution, we reveal an additional contribution to the anisotropy constant arising from shape anisotropy and interparticle interactions.

This study investigates the effect of maceration and different winemaking techniques on the species diversity of yeasts in white wines from the Slovak Tokay wine region, known for its traditional white wine production. Lipovina grape variety samples were divided into three groups: control (C), macerated (M) and macerated with the addition of a yeast culture (MY). During the entire fermentation process, quantitative and qualitative microbiological analyses of the raw material and must samples were carried out, which resulted in the identification of 60 yeast isolates via the API 20 C AUX biochemical test and MALDI-TOF MS.

Late Bedtime from the Perspective of Adolescents: A Qualitative Study.

Nat Sci Sleep

December 2024

Institute of Social Medicine and Medical Ethics, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava, Bratislava, Slovakia.

Purpose: Later sleep timing is a key determinant of reduced sleep duration and quality in adolescents and is associated with negative mental and physical outcomes. However, little is known about adolescents' views on late bedtime. The study's purpose is to explore adolescents' perspectives on why they go to sleep late during school nights and what would help them to go to bed earlier.

In the past decades, iron has been one of the intensively studied biodegradable metals due to its suitable mechanical properties, but it suffers from slow degradation in a physiological environment and low bioactivity. In this work, the beneficial properties of ceramic and polymer coatings were merged to enhance the corrosion properties and biological compatibility of Fe-based biomaterials. A new bilayer coating for Fe-based biomaterials that speeds up degradation while offering controlled, localized drug release to prevent infections was prepared.

Wound healing represents a complex and evolutionarily conserved process across vertebrates, encompassing a series of life-rescuing events. The healing process runs in three main phases: inflammation, proliferation, and maturation/remodelling. While acute inflammation is indispensable for cleansing the wound, removing infection, and eliminating dead tissue characterised by the prevalence of neutrophils, the proliferation phase is characterised by transition into the inflammatory cell profile, shifting towards the prevalence of macrophages.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined sleep patterns among Slovak adolescents to see how these relate to body fat and fitness levels.
  • Using data from over 8,900 young people, researchers identified three sleep groups: optimal sleepers, those with occasional sleep issues, and poor sleepers.
  • Findings revealed that poor sleepers had more body fat and lower fitness; however, only the link to fitness remained significant after further analysis, suggesting these insights could inform health interventions for teens.

Article Synopsis
  • Pyrrolidines, like the compound SS13, are important in medicine due to their potential effects against various diseases, including cancer, as many drugs contain their structure.
  • The study investigates how SS13 induces oxidative stress and activates autophagy in colorectal cancer cell lines (HCT116 and Caco-2), hypothesizing that these processes contribute to cancer cell death.
  • Results show that SS13 increases oxidative stress and autophagy markers, leading to decreased cancer cell proliferation, while inhibiting autophagy with chloroquine results in higher cell survival, highlighting the role of autophagy in cell death.

Pain chronification risk assessment: advanced phenotyping and scoring for prediction and treatments tailored to individualized patient profile.

EPMA J

December 2024

The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Pain Center, East Slovak Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, Faculty of Medicine, Pavol Jozef Safarik University, Kosice, Slovakia.

Unlabelled: Acute pain is a physiologic, protective life-important warning neurological signal indicating multi-level tissue modulations caused by a broad spectrum of health adverse events such as stress overload, mechanical trauma, ischemia-reperfusion, sterile and infection-triggered inflammation, single- and multi-organ damage, acute and chronic wounds, tissue remodeling and degeneration, amongst others. On the other hand, pain chronification results in a pathologic transformation from the protective pain signaling into persistent debilitative medical condition with severe consequences including but not restricted to phenotype-specific behavioral patterns, reduced quality of life, and cognitive and mood disorders. Who is predisposed to an increased vs.

Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Histology and Embryology, Comenius University in Bratislava, Sasinkova 4, 811 04, Bratislava, Slovak Republic.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how E. coli infection affects cell turnover and cell death (apoptosis) in the intestines of germ-free piglets.
  • Researchers compared healthy germ-free piglets to those colonized with E. coli, finding an increase in epithelial cell proliferation in the jejunum of the infected group.
  • Significant changes in markers related to inflammation and apoptosis were observed in the lamina propria of both intestinal areas, indicating that gut bacteria influence cell behavior and the body's response to infection.

In this study, we employ spectroscopic, thermodynamic and molecular docking approaches to identify the mechanism by which thiazolidinone derivatives 4a-4d bind with human serum albumin. It has been suggested that the affinity of the interaction of derivatives 4a-4d with HSA is within the optimal range necessary for the transportation and distribution of compounds within the organism. The binding constant values for the derivative/HSA complexes were found to be 0.
