Objective: Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) is an ion/anion transporter in the mitochondrial inner membrane that plays a crucial role in immune response, regulation of oxidative stress, and cellular metabolism. UCP2 polymorphisms are linked to chronic inflammation, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, exercise efficiency, and longevity. Daily step count and number of teeth are modifiable factors that reduce mortality risk, although the role of UCP2 in this mechanism is unknown.

Platelet lipid rafts are critical membrane domains for adhesion, aggregation, and clot retraction. Lipid rafts are isolated as a detergent-resistant membrane fraction via sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The platelet detergent-resistant membrane shifted to a higher density on the sucrose density gradient upon thrombin stimulation.

Introduction: A stoma prolapse is easy to diagnose by visual examination, and it rarely incarcerates. Therefore, manual reduction is usually performed as soon as the diagnosis is made. In this report, we describe a case of stoma prolapse that could not be reduced manually and ruptured because an incarcerated parastomal hernia occurred in the stoma, mimicking stoma prolapse.

Objective Cataract and chronic kidney disease (CKD) occur with increasing frequency with age and share common risk factors including smoking, diabetes, and hypertension. We evaluated the risk of incident cataract surgery in patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD and dialysis-dependent CKD compared to non-CKD patients, while taking into account the competing risk of death. Methods The participants included 1,839 patients from Sado General Hospital enrolled in the Project in Sado for Total Health (PROST) between June 2008 and December 2016 (54% men; mean age, 69 years).

Objective: Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) are generally discouraged from consuming high amounts of vegetables and fruits given the potential risk of hyperkalemia. In the general population, however, lower vegetable and fruit intake is associated with higher mortality. This Japanese hospital-based prospective cohort study including non-CKD and CKD participants examined whether the frequency of vegetable and fruit intake is associated with mortality, and whether the presence of CKD modifies this association.

Objectives: We aimed to clarify the accuracy of pregnant women's knowledge and understanding regarding infectious disease screening in early pregnancy and clarify the roles that should be played by health care providers in promoting the health of pregnant women and their children.
Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted in 25 hospitals across Japan from May 2018 to September 2019. We compared the agreement rates regarding screening results for hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), syphilis, human T-cell leukemia virus-1 (HTLV-1), and cervical cytology in the medical records and understanding of their results by pregnant women.

Background: A decrease in pediatric hospitalizations during the COVID-19 pandemic has been reported worldwide; however, few studies have examined areas with a limited number of COVID-19 cases, where influenced by viral interference by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is minimum.
Methods: We conducted an epidemiological study of pediatric hospitalizations on Sado, an isolated island in Niigata, Japan, that was unique environment with few COVID-19 cases and reliable pediatric admissions monitoring. We compared numbers of monthly hospitalizations and associated diagnoses for the periods April 2016 to March 2020 (pre-pandemic period) and April 2020 to March 2021 (pandemic period).

Distigmine sometimes causes severe adverse events, and the serum butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) level is reduced by distigmine. However, limited data are available on the association between serum BChE level and the risk of distigmine-induced adverse events. To clarify the association between the risk of distigmine-induced adverse events and serum BChE level, we retrospectively reviewed 371 patients with 2199 measurements of serum BChE levels at three hospitals, of whom 24 (6.

Background: To assess alignment for total knee arthroplasty, the center of the ankle has been used as the main reference point for the distal tibia; however, the true load-bearing mechanical axis should be determined as a line from the center of the femoral head to the lowest point of calcaneus. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the differences in alignment.
Methods: Patients with medial osteoarthritis who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty (Group A, center of ankle reference, or Group C, calcaneal contact reference) were recruited.

The prevalence of quinolone- and macrolide-resistant Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is increasing worldwide, but the relationship between the resistance of GBS to these antibiotics and patient outcome remains unclear. Therefore, we evaluated whether blood stream infection caused by quinolone- or macrolide-resistant GBS is associated with high mortality. Our findings in 77 patients with GBS bacteremia demonstrate that quinolone and macrolide resistance may not be risk factors for 30-day mortality.
