Indoxyl sulfate (IS) is one of the most potent uraemic toxins involved in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) through the induction of inflammation and oxidative stress. This study assessed the potential benefits of reducing IS concentrations through dialysis treatment to improve renal function, inflammation, and oxidative stress. A prospective, observational cohort study of 50 patients with CKD undergoing dialysis treatment was conducted.

Purpose: A wide range of cytokines has been demonstrated to be involved in the etiology of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Gene polymorphisms may potentially contribute to a hereditary predisposition toward circulating cytokine levels as (high, intermediate, or low) since they can affect cytokine production or function. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of cytokine levels and the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within cytokine genes with T1DM in Saudi children.

Impact of equine herpesvirus-1 ORF15 (EUL45) on viral replication and neurovirulence.

Vet Microbiol

November 2024

Department of Applied Veterinary Sciences, United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences, Gifu University, 1-1 Yanagido, Gifu 501-1193, Japan; Laboratory of Veterinary Microbiology, Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences, Gifu University, 1-1 Yanagido, Gifu 501-1193, Japan.

Equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) causes respiratory illness, fetal loss, perinatal mortality, and myeloencephalopathy. This study investigated ORF15's impact on virus infectivity and neurovirulence. The Ab4p neurovirulent strain of EHV1 was used as a backbone to create Ab4p attB, Ab4p∆ORF15, and Ab4p∆ORF15R chimeras via BAC DNA transfection into RK-13 cells.

Nickel (Ni) is a common metal with a nephrotoxic effect, damaging the kidneys. This study investigated the mechanism by which gallic acid (GA) protects mice kidneys against renal damage induced by Nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs). Forty male Swiss albino mice were randomly assigned into four groups, each consisting of ten mice ( = 10/group): Group I the control group, received no treatment; Group II, the GA group, was administrated GA at a dosage of 110 mg/kg/day body weight; Group III, the NiO-NPs group, received injection of NiO-NPs at a concentration of 20 mg/kg body weight for 10 consecutive days; Group IV, the GA + NiO-NPs group, underwent treatment with both GA and NiO-NPs.

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a bio-electrical energy generator that uses respiring microbes to transform organic matter present in sludge into electrical energy. The primary goal of this work was to introduce a new approach to the green electricity generation technology. In this context a total of 6 bacterial isolates were recovered from sludge samples collected from El-Sheikh Zayed water purification plant, Egypt, and screened for their electrogenic potential.

Effect of olive, flaxseed, and grape seed nano-emulsion essential oils on semen buffalo freezability.

Theriogenology

December 2023

Department of Animal Production, Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University, Zagazig, 44511, Egypt. Electronic address:

The existing treatise targeted to compare the effects of adding different nano-emulsions essential oils (olive, flaxseed, and grapeseed oils) in freezing extender on semen quality and freezability in buffalo. Nano-emulsions were prepared from olive, flaxseed, and grapeseed oils and characterized for their sizes and shapes. Semen extended in four tubes were supplemented with 0 (control) and 3.

Musculoskeletal pain and inflammation can vary from localised pain like pain in the shoulders and neck to widespread pain like fibromyalgia, and as per estimates, around 90% of humans have experienced such pain. Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently prescribed for such conditions but are associated with concerns like gastric irritation and bleeding. In the present study, a microemulsion-based gel comprising β-caryophyllene, isopropyl myristate, Tween 80, and normal saline was prepared as a topical option for managing topical pain and inflammation.

Osteopenia and osteoporosis, are prevalent skeletal systemic conditions, cause weaker bones and an increased risk of fragility fractures. This work is aimed to evaluate the relation between bone-remolding markers and genotypes of four single nucleotide polymorphisms in young Saudi females (rs2297480 of farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FDPS), rs3736228 of Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5), rs1234612 of sclerostin (SOST), and rs9934438 of Vitamin K epoxide reductase complex subunit 1  (VKORC1) ). For this purpose, 750 premenopausal females aged 18 to 40 years old, either university students, postgraduates, or university employees were recruited and divided into three groups according to bone mineral density BMD (g/cm2) divided by T score into osteoporosis (n = 12), osteopenia (n = 147), and normal (n = 591).

Organophosphate insecticides, such as diazinon, have been well investigated to pose health and environmental risks. In this study, ferric-modified nanocellulose composite (FCN) and nanocellulose particles (CN) based on a natural source as a loofah sponge were synthesized to verify their adsorption potential to eliminate diazinon (DZ) from contaminated water. The as-prepared adsorbents were characterized by performing TGA, XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, pH, and BET analyses, in which FCN showed high thermal stability, surface area of 82.
