Background: The global burden of metabolic diseases is increasing, but estimates of their impact on primary liver cancer are uncertain. We aimed to assess the global burden of primary liver cancer attributable to metabolic risk factors, including high body mass index (BMI) and high fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels, between 1990 and 2021.
Methods: The total number and age-standardized rates of deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from primary liver cancer attributable to each metabolic risk factor were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 1990-2021.

Objectives: In recent years, the rise of big data and artificial intelligence has led to an increasing expansion of databases and web services in biomedical research. cBioPortal is one of the most widely used platforms for accessing cancer genomic and clinical data. The primary objective of this study was to develop a tool that simplifies programmatic interaction with cBioPortal's web service.

Aims: Whether the plasma-based ceramide-based risk score CERT1 improves risk prediction for cardiovascular disease (CVD) is uncertain.
Materials And Methods: Baseline and follow-up data were combined from two cohorts, 334 patients with established/suspected CVD and 196 patients with type 2 diabetes followed for a median of 74 months (interquartile range 54-79 months). For the calculation of CERT1 risk score, we measured four specific plasma ceramides [Cer(d18:1/16:0), Cer(d18:1/18:0) and Cer(d18:1/24:1)] and their ratios to Cer(d18:1/24:0).

Background: Studies have reported an association between metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and an increased risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the magnitude of the risk and whether this risk varies with the severity of MASLD remains uncertain.
Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched three large electronic databases using predefined keywords to identify cohort studies (published up to 30 September 2024) in which MASLD was diagnosed by liver biopsy, imaging methods, International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes, or blood-based scores.

Background: Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by the soil-transmitted helminth Strongyloides stercoralis, recently included in the 2030 targets of the World Health Organization for the control of STHs. Assessment of infection prevalence is fundamental for decision-making about the implementation of control programs, but diagnostic assays to be applied in such context require evaluation. Seroassays based on recombinant antigens, which could be produced in a standardized and scalable manner, are particularly appealing for use in control programs.

Background: Strongyloidiasis is a chronic parasitic disease that results in relevant human morbidity, caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis. This nematode has a unique and complex life-cycle. There is so far no perfect test for this helminthiasis.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has emerged as a public health threat as it affects approximately 38% of the adult population worldwide, with its prevalence rising in step with that of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Beyond the implications of MASLD for liver health, it is also associated with cardiovascular and vascular dysfunction. Although the many shared risk factors and common metabolic milieu might indicate that cardiovascular disease and MASLD are discrete outcomes from common systemic pathogeneses, a growing body of evidence has identified a potential causal relationship between MASLD and coronary artery disease, which is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with MASLD and all-cause mortality worldwide.

Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) related arthritis is the most prevalent extraintestinal manifestation (EIM) of IBD, ranging between 10 and 39%. Magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) is used to assess small bowel disease involvement in Crohn's disease (CD) and can detect signs of sacroiliitis in up to 23.5% of patients.

The pharmacotherapy of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its progressive form, the metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), remains a hot topic in research and a largely unmet need in clinical practice. As the first approval of a disease-specific drug, resmetirom, was regarded as a milestone for the management of this common liver disease, this comprehensive and updated review aimed to highlight the importance of the hepatic thyroid hormone (TH) receptor (THR)-β signalling for the treatment of MASH, with a special focus on resmetirom. First, the genomic and non-genomic actions of the liver-directed THR-β mediated mechanisms are summarized.

Aims: Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) decreases hepatic lipogenesis in animal models, and FGF21 analogues decrease serum triglycerides (TG) in adults in phase-2 trials. On the other hand, serum FGF21 is associated with higher TG in observational studies of people with obesity, raising a sort of paradox. We tested the hypothesis that FGF21 is induced by TG in youth with obesity, as a compensatory mechanism.

: A survey conducted by the European Observatory on Cataract Surgery showed high heterogeneity in the use of antiseptics both preoperatively and in the operating room, highlighting the absence of a global consensus regarding ocular infection prophylaxis in cataract surgery. : The antibacterial activity of seven antiseptic ophthalmic formulations (AOFs) registered as medical devices and the two most common disinfectants were evaluated in vitro against five bacterial species. The viability of bacterial strains after exposure to the antiseptic was evaluated with different techniques: the in vitro Minimum Inhibitory Concentration and the subsequent Minimum Bactericidal Concentration, performed on liquid and solid culture medium.

Background: Metabolic risk factors are a significant cause of global burden among adolescents and young adults, but there is a lack of attention to the burden attributable to these metabolic risk factors globally.
Aims: This study aims to provide comprehensive estimates of five important metabolic risk factors and the attributable disease burden in people aged 15-39 years from 1990 to 2021, based on the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) database.
Methods: Global total deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were used to describe the burden attributable to five common metabolic risk factors, including high fasting plasma glucose (FPG), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high systolic blood pressure (SBP), high body mass index (BMI), and kidney dysfunction, in adolescents and young adults.

Background And Aim: Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index is a widely used test for non-invasively assessing liver fibrosis. We aimed to investigate the association between FIB-4 index and risk of all-cause mortality in patients at high cardiovascular (CV) risk and to determine whether coexisting renal dysfunction mediates this association.
Methods And Results: Single-center prospective study of 994 patients with established or suspected coronary artery disease undergoing coronary angiography, followed for a median of 44 months.
