Background And Objective: Pain, a symptom often present in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), alters quality of life. COPD exacerbation augments several mechanisms that may cause pain (dyspnea, hyperinflation and inflammation) and therefore we hypothesized that pain might be increased during exacerbation.
Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in patients admitted for acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) in two emergency departments in France and Canada.

Background: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) revision surgery is often necessary because of its high failure rate. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that better patient selection, when converting a failed LAGB to a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) as a one-stage revision procedure, is safe, feasible and improves the complication rate.
Patients And Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on patients who underwent a one-stage conversion of failed gastric banding to a LSG.

Voluntary non-remunerated donations remain the cornerstone for a safe and sustainable blood supply. According to the World Health Organization and other international scientific committees, all nations must switch their system of blood collection to voluntary non-remunerated donation. Several other types of blood donations still exist nowadays that will be discussed.

Background: Podocytes are highly differentiated visceral cells, and several related specific proteins, such as podocalyxin and podocin are potential tools for the evaluation of podocyturia. However, precise quantitation of podocyturia-related proteins is complex and often unreliable.
Method: A reversed-phase ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated to quantify podocalyxin and podocin levels in urine supernatant by using specific cleavable peptides and standards.

Reconsolidation theory posits that upon retrieval, consolidated memories are destabilized and need to be restabilized in order to persist. It has been suggested that experience with a competitive task immediately after memory retrieval may interrupt these restabilization processes leading to memory loss. Indeed, using a motor sequence learning paradigm, we have recently shown that, in humans, interference training immediately after active task-based retrieval of the consolidated motor sequence knowledge may negatively affect its performance levels.

Training and repeated exposure to odorants leads to enhanced olfactory sensitivity. So far, the efficacy of intensive olfactory training on olfactory function in a healthy population and its underlying neurobiological basis remain poorly known. This study investigated the effects of a 6-week intensive and well-controlled olfactory training on olfactory function and brain structure/neuroplasticity.

Diagnosing piriformis syndrome (PS) throughout the past decades was not that easy, however peroneal H-reflex was proved as reliable test for PS with the change in wave amplitude and delay in conduction as parameters for diagnosis. We interpreted these parameters according to treatment's results carried out for patients presenting clinical PS, aiming to define a threshold value for peroneal H-reflex delay to accurately diagnose. A retrospective mono-centric review of 27 patients, 9 females and 18 males, aged 22-65 years, benefited from peroneal H-reflex test and treated for clinical PS.

Vulnerability to obesity includes eating in response to food cues, which acquire incentive value through conditioning. The conditioning process is largely subserved by dopamine, theorized to encode the discrepancy between expected and actual rewards known as the reward prediction error (RPE). Ghrelin is a gut-derived homeostatic hormone that triggers hunger and eating.

Ectopic lingual thyroid has been described, however, follicular carcinoma arising within it is an extremely rare entity with only 40 cases reported in the literature. Lingual thyroid carcinoma is undistinguishable from benign enlargement of lingual thyroid, the later should also be differentiated from many oropharyngeal pathologies including but not limited to thyroglossal duct cyst, lipoma, dermoid cyst and salivary gland tumors. Ectopic lingual nature of thyroid tissue can be diagnosed with scintigraphy scan; however, malignant transformation confirms just after pathological examination.

A large body of observations indicate that there is an inconsistent knowledge of Transfusion Medicine among health care professionals as well as inconsistent knowledge in all aspects of the transfusion process, from blood donation to transfusion on the ward. It is obvious to consider that appropriate education in Transfusion Medicine should be achieved in the education of specialists who will prescribe transfusion on a regular basis (hematologists, critical care specialists, anaethesiologists and others.) However,we also believe that education in Transfusion Medicine should also be delivered to almost all other medical specialists who may prescribe blood components.

Infants' experiences are considered to determine to a large degree the strength and effectiveness of neural connections and fine tune the development of brain networks. As one of the most pervasive and potent relational experiences of infancy, parent-child relationships appear to be prime candidates to account for experience-driven differences in children's brain development. Yet, studies linking parenting and functional connectivity are surprisingly scarce, and restricted to the connectivity of limbic structures.

Voluntary nonremunerated donation stands for the framework of a solid, safe, and sustainable blood supply; for this reason, the World Health Organization has set a goal toward achieving 100% voluntary nonremunerated blood donation in 2020. However, in Lebanon like in most developing countries, the majority of blood donations still come from family/replacement donors (around 75%) followed by voluntary donors for only 15%; compensated donors yet account for 10% of blood donations. Lebanon has a decentralized and fragmented blood supply system where private health care facilities predominate over the public system; thus, numerous challenges and roadblocks-that are discussed in this article-are likely to delay the fulfillment of the WHO resolution.

Historically, the clinical application of extracorporeal treatments (ECTRs), such as hemodialysis or hemoperfusion, was first intended for poisoned patients. With time, ECTRs were used almost indiscriminately to facilitate the elimination of many poisons, albeit with uncertain clinical benefit. To determine the precise role of ECTRs in poisoning situations, multiple variables need to be considered including a careful risk assessment, the poison's characteristics including toxicokinetics, alternative treatments, the patient's clinical status, and intricacies of available ECTRs, all of which are reviewed in this article.
