Introduction: Depression and its components significantly impact dementia prediction and severity, necessitating reliable objective measures for quantification.

Methods: We investigated associations between emotion-based speech measures (valence, arousal, and dominance) during picture descriptions and depression dimensions derived from the geriatric depression scale (GDS, dysphoria, withdrawal-apathy-vigor (WAV), anxiety, hopelessness, and subjective memory complaint).

Results: Higher WAV was associated with more negative valence (estimate = -0.

Background And Aims: The diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) is of importance among patients with ST segment elevation (STEMI) undergoing primary coronary intervention (PCI). It is often delayed given the need in serial measurements of creatinine or other serum markers. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a proven marker for AKI, although its role as an early predictor in this setting was scarcely addressed before and was the aim of our study.

Umbilical venous catheters are commonly inserted in critically ill newborns and can lead to severe complications when misplaced. We report a preterm female with a prenatal diagnosis of duodenal atresia who presented 2 days after the surgical repair with abdominal distension, hemodynamic instability, elevated liver enzymes with severe cholestatic jaundice, and a hepatic collection on abdominal sonography. An urgent explorative laparotomy demonstrated a large amount of white, milky-appearing fluid in the abdominal cavity.

Background Little is known about the impact of transcatheter mitral valve edge-to-edge repair on changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and the effect of an acute reduction in LVEF on prognosis. We aimed to assess changes in LVEF after transcatheter mitral valve edge-to-edge repair for both primary and secondary mitral regurgitation (PMR and SMR, respectively), identify rates and predictors of LVEF reduction, and estimate its impact on prognosis. Methods and Results In this international multicenter registry, patients with both PMR and SMR undergoing transcatheter mitral valve edge-to-edge repair were included.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed the effectiveness of the modified ACC/AHA lesion classification as a way to predict short- and long-term outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with second-generation drug-eluting stents.
  • Data from 8,516 patients revealed that those with complex lesions (B2/C) experienced higher instances of target lesion failure (TLF) compared to those with noncomplex lesions (A/B1) at multiple follow-up points (30 days, 1 year, and 5 years).
  • The findings suggest that the historical ACC/AHA classification system remains relevant for predicting clinical outcomes after PCI, particularly highlighting worse outcomes for complex lesions after 5 years.

Introduction: Retraction pockets and marginal perforations of the pars tensa of the tympanic membrane (TM) are most commonly found at superior posterior quadrant (SPQ). The patulous Eustachian tube tends to manifest in the same quadrant. Variation in the structure of the TM may explain these observations.

The Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition, between 50 000 and 40 000 years ago, is a period of important ecological and cultural changes. In this framework, the Rock Shelter of Uluzzo C (Apulia, southern Italy) represents an important site due to Late Mousterian and Uluzzian evidence preserved in its stratigraphic sequence. Here, we present the results of a multidisciplinary analysis performed on the materials collected between 2016 and 2018 from the Uluzzian stratigraphic units (SUs) 3, 15 and 17.

Classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) is curable in 90% of cases, but advanced stage patients who do not respond well to first-line (1L) therapy have poorer outcomes. This retrospective study examines patient characteristics, treatment patterns, clinical outcomes, and safety management of 1L cHL therapies in common clinical practice in Italy (IT), Israel (IL), and Spain (SP). The overall sample ( = 256) included patients with stage IIb to IV cHL, of which 86.

Background: Recent international guidelines recommend thromboprophylaxis in patients with cancer at intermediate-high venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk.

Objectives: We aimed to assess the current incidence, risk factors and management of cancer-associated VTE and associated health care resource utilization in a 2.5-million-member state-mandated health service in Israel.

Background Long-term data to study recent trends in the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF), overall and among sex and race groups, are scarce. We evaluated the 30-year trends in the incidence of AF in the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study cohort and explored race and sex differences in these trends. Methods and Results We included 15 343 men and women aged 45 to 64 years in 1987 to 1989 without AF from 4 US communities in the ARIC cohort.

Introduction: We compared retinal layers' thickness between apolipoprotein E () Ɛ4 carriers and non-carriers in a cohort of cognitively normal middle-aged adults enriched for Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk.

Methods: Participants (N = 245) underwent spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Multivariate analyses of covariance adjusting for age, sex, education, and best corrected vision acuity was used to compare retinal thickness between groups.

KCNMA1 Channelopathy International Advocacy Foundation (KCIAF) New York New York USA.

Background: -linked channelopathy is a rare movement disorder first reported in 2005. Paroxysmal non-kinesigenic dyskinesia (PNKD) in -linked channelopathy is the most common symptom in patients harboring the -N999S mutation. PNKD episodes occur up to hundreds of times daily with significant morbidity and limited treatment options, often in the context of epilepsy.

Background The association of pulmonary and systemic arterial hypertension is believed to be mediated through hypertensive left heart disease. The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether pulmonary hypertension (PHT) is associated with systemic arterial hypertension among patients with apparently normal left ventricular diastolic function. Methods and Results Consecutive patients who had echocardiographic evaluation between 2007 and 2019 were enrolled.

Ventricular free wall rupture is a rare post myocardial complication with a high associated mortality. In this article we discuss the case of an elderly patient who presented to our emergency department in shock after an episode of syncope. Using Point Of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), identification of cardiac tamponade and pericardial thrombus was possible, signs indicating a diagnosis of free wall rupture.

Article Synopsis
  • A case report discusses a hypertensive crisis triggered by the combination of amphetamine and Marwitt's Kidney Pills, leading to a variety of nonspecific symptoms like chest pain and abdominal distress.
  • Diagnosis was complicated by unusual physical signs such as green urine and fingernails, but was clarified using point-of-care ultrasound, revealing acute cardiac and pulmonary issues.
  • The patient's history indicated regular use of an over-the-counter drug in Thailand containing methylene blue, combined with past amphetamine use, which contributed to his acute health crisis.

Background: Multimorbidity of intestinal cancer (IC), type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity is a complex set of diseases, affected by environmental and genetic risk factors. High-fat diet (HFD) and oral bacterial infection play important roles in the etiology of these diseases through inflammation and various biological mechanisms.

Methods: To study the complexity of this multimorbidity, we used the collaborative cross (CC) mouse genetics reference population.

Introduction: Few studies have explored whether gait measured continuously within a community setting can identify individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study tests the feasibility of this method to identify individuals at the earliest stage of AD.

Methods: Mild AD (n = 38) and cognitively normal control (CNC; n = 48) participants from the University of Kansas Alzheimer's Disease Center Registry wore a GT3x+ accelerometer continuously for 7 days to assess gait.

Background Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a known risk factor for adverse outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. However, in some studies PAD is not an independent risk factor. We sought to examine the independent impact of PAD on a large prospective percutaneous coronary intervention registry.
