Susac syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the clinical triad of central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, sensorineural hearing impairment, and branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO). The purpose of this study is to examine the demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment, and long-term prognosis of Susac syndrome. The data recorded for all Susac syndrome patients treated at the Sheba Medical Center between 1998 and 2014 included demographics, clinical signs at presentation and during the disease course, imaging findings, treatment, and prognosis.

Ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury during clinical hepatic procedures is characterized by inflammatory conditions and the apoptosis of hepatocytes. Nuclear factor‑κB (NF‑κB), nitric oxide and the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor‑α and interleukin‑1 were observed to increase following IR and mediate the inflammatory response in the liver. CF102 is a highly selective A3 adenosine receptor (A3AR) agonist, and has been identified to induce an anti‑inflammatory and protective effect on the liver via the downregulation of the NF‑κB signaling pathway.

Microbiota at the crossroads of autoimmunity.

Autoimmun Rev

September 2016

Faculty of Medicine, Bar-Ilan University, Henrietta Szold 8, Safed 1311502, Israel. Electronic address:

Autoimmune diseases have a multifactorial etiology including genetic and environmental factors. Recently, there has been increased appreciation of the critical involvement of the microbiota in the pathogenesis of autoimmunity, although in many cases, the cause and the consequence are not easy to distinguish. Here, we suggest that many of the known cues affecting the function of the immune system, such as genetics, gender, pregnancy and diet, which are consequently involved in autoimmunity, exert their effects by influencing, at least in part, the microbiota composition and activity.

Gait disturbances and falls are common among older adults and patients with Parkinson's disease. These symptoms curtail mobility, independence, and quality of life. This video illustrates important aspects of parkinsonian gait and highlights features that should be focused on during the clinical examination.

Objectives/aims: The study was designed to evaluate the optimal dosage of lamotrigine, as monotherapy, in the treatment of adults suffering from complex partial seizures with or without secondary generalization in everyday clinical practice.

Materials And Methods: The ones used in this study was the collection of the data of all adult patients treated with lamotrigine, retrospectively. The dosage and efficacy of treatment were evaluated along with side effects and retention rate.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematologic malignancy characterized by extremely heterogeneous molecular and biologic abnormalities that hamper the development of effective targeted treatment modalities. While AML cells are highly sensitive to cytotoxic Ca2+ overload, the feasibility of Ca2+- targeted therapy of this disease remains unclear. Here, we show that apoptotic response of AML cells to the synergistically acting polyphenols curcumin (CUR) and carnosic acid (CA), combined at low, non-cytotoxic doses of each compound was mediated solely by disruption of cellular Ca2+ homeostasis.

Introduction: Patients with visual vertigo (VV) report dizziness provoked by moving visual surroundings. It has been suggested that these subjects develop a compensation strategy for a vestibulo-proprioceptive deficit and rely excessively on visual input. We have postulated that patients with VV might have brain abnormalities that interfere with appropriate processing of visual stimulation and performed a brain MRI study to verify this hypothesis.

Treatment with helminthes and helminthes ova improved the clinical symptoms of several autoimmune diseases in patients and in animal models. Phosphorylcholine (PC) proved to be the immunomodulatory molecule. We aimed to decipher the tolerogenic potential of tuftsin-PC (TPC), a novel helminth-based compound in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) a mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

a Phototherapy and Day Care Center, Department of Dermatology, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, affiliated with the Sackler Faculty of Medicine Tel Aviv University, Israel.

Background: Plaque-type palmoplantar psoriasis (PPTP) is a chronic recalcitrant dermatosis with treatment modalities ranging through topical, phototherapy or systemic. Phototherapy options include various forms of ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A with prior psoralen sensitization (PUVA). Currently, few comparative studies have been reported.

Purpose: To examine the clinical differences in manifestation, course, treatment, and prognosis of thyroid eye disease (TED) in patients younger than 40 years of age at diagnosis compared to older patients.

Methods: Medical record review of 131 TED patients was performed. The patients were divided into two age groups, Group 1 ≤ 40 years (23 patients) and Group 2 > 40 years (108 patients).

Background: An antibiogram (ABG) gives the results of in vitro susceptibility tests performed on a pathogen isolated from a culture of a sample taken from blood or other tissues. The institutional cross-ABG consists of the conditional probability of susceptibility for pairs of antimicrobials. This paper explores how interpretative reading of the isolate ABG can be used to replace and improve the prior probabilities stored in the institutional ABG.

Administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is a recognized safe and efficient immunomodulation therapy for many autoimmune diseases. Anti-idiotypic antibody binding to pathogenic autoantibodies was proposed as one of the mechanisms attributed to the protective activity of IVIg in autoimmunity. The aim of this study was to fractionate the anti-anti-citrullinated protein anti-idiotypic-antibodies (anti-ACPA) from an IVIg preparation and to test it as a treatment for collagen-induced arthritis in mice.

Recommendations on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for inherited bone marrow failure syndromes.

Bone Marrow Transplant

September 2015

Service d'hémato-immunologie pédiatrique, GH Robert-Debré, AP-HP, Paris, France.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) offers the potential to cure patients with an inherited bone marrow failure syndrome (IBMFS). However, the procedure involves the risk of treatment-related mortality and may be associated with significant early and late morbidity. For these reasons, the benefits should be carefully weighed against the risks.

Objective: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is a common complication in individuals treated with antibiotics. The aim of this review was to systematically evaluate the efficacy of yogurt consumption for the prevention of AAD.

Methods: In this systematic review, a number of databases including MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library, with no language restrictions, were searched up to September 2014 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effect of yogurt consumption in adults and children who were receiving antibiotics.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a frequent complication of patients who experienced major trauma. Prevention of VTE is usually by thrombophylaxis and or by the use of a retrievable filter. Lately, the use of a retrievable filter in trauma patients has increased despite evidence cautioning against its use.

Background: Human autoimmune myocarditis is characterized by an increased frequency of serum organ and disease-specific anti-heart autoantibodies (AHA) in affected patients. To assess whether AHA are directly pathogenic, we used the passive transfer technique of AHA from patients to normal Balb/c mice to induce an experimental myocarditis.

Methods: In keeping with a classical passive transfer experiment, sera from 5 AHA positive myocarditis patients (3 male, mean age 30 ± 11 years, 3 with giant cell and 2 with lymphocytic myocarditis) were affinity purified and injected into 25 Balb/c mice.
