In 2014, the International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) updated the criteria for diagnosing myeloma and added three additional criteria to the traditional Calcium elevation, Renal impairment, Anemia, Bone disease (CRAB) criteria, called the Sixty % marrow plama cells, Light chain ratio >60, Mri demonstates lytic lesions (SLiM) criteria (clonal bone marrow plasma cells ≥60%, involved to uninvolved free light chain ratio (FLCr) ≥100 and >1 focal lesion on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)). We report on the outcomes of 30 patients who underwent autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) where therapy was initiated solely based on SLiM criteria and compared them to a matched cohort of 60 patients whose myeloma-defining event was CRAB. The SLiM cohort had a shorter median time to neutrophil (15 vs.

Background/objectives: To evaluate the refractive outcomes, optical performance, and the quality of vision in patients implanted with a new diffractive intraocular lens (IOL), the Intensity Hanita.
Subjects/methods: This observational, prospective, longitudinal study included 64 eyes underwent bilateral cataract surgery with the Intensity IOL (Hanita Israel) implantation. Main outcome measures after 6 months were the following visual acuities (VAs) of uncorrected and corrected distance (UDVA and CDVA), uncorrected and distance corrected intermediate VAs (UIVA and DCIVA), uncorrected and distance corrected near (UNVA and DCNVA), refraction, slitlamp biomicroscopy, defocus curve (DFC), high ocular aberrations (HOA), contrast sensitivity (CS), optical quality, subjective quality of vision (QoV) and near activity visual questionnaires (NAVQ).
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the changing levels of stress among dental students during 8 months of a basic manual skills course in the preclinical year and to examine the association between stress and dental performance.
Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted in the 2023 academic year in a total of 58 (male = 17 and female = 41; mean age = 26.43, range 22-33) undergraduate dental students at Tel Aviv University of dentistry during their fourth year of study.
Introduction: Depression and its components significantly impact dementia prediction and severity, necessitating reliable objective measures for quantification.
Methods: We investigated associations between emotion-based speech measures (valence, arousal, and dominance) during picture descriptions and depression dimensions derived from the geriatric depression scale (GDS, dysphoria, withdrawal-apathy-vigor (WAV), anxiety, hopelessness, and subjective memory complaint).
Results: Higher WAV was associated with more negative valence (estimate = -0.

Background And Aims: The diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) is of importance among patients with ST segment elevation (STEMI) undergoing primary coronary intervention (PCI). It is often delayed given the need in serial measurements of creatinine or other serum markers. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a proven marker for AKI, although its role as an early predictor in this setting was scarcely addressed before and was the aim of our study.

Current rehabilitation protocols may not adequately challenge shoulder stability to encourage adaptive coping strategies. Apprehension-based training (ABT) is a new treatment concept derived from the supine moving apprehension test (SMAT), a previously validated performance measure among patients with ASD.

We report a preterm female with a prenatal diagnosis of duodenal atresia who presented 2 days after the surgical repair with abdominal distension, hemodynamic instability, elevated liver enzymes with severe cholestatic jaundice, and a hepatic collection on abdominal sonography. An urgent explorative laparotomy demonstrated a large amount of white, milky-appearing fluid in the abdominal cavity.

Background: Understanding the risk factors and outcomes of intraoperative periprosthetic femoral fractures (IPFF) during hip arthroplasty is crucial for appropriate perioperative management. Previous studies have identified risk factors for IPFF in total hip arthroplasty patients, but data for hip hemiarthroplasty (HA) is lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the age associated with increased rates of IPFF in patients undergoing HA.

Background: The addition of Gram-negative coverage to antibiotic prophylaxis protocols prior to elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been reported to reduce periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). However, it is unknown whether adding a Gram-negative-targeted antibiotic agent improves outcomes in the trauma population. This study aimed to investigate whether the addition of a single, pre-operative dose of Gentamicin is associated with lower rates of PJI in patients undergoing hemiarthroplasty (HA) as treatment for a hip fracture.

Background Little is known about the impact of transcatheter mitral valve edge-to-edge repair on changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and the effect of an acute reduction in LVEF on prognosis. We aimed to assess changes in LVEF after transcatheter mitral valve edge-to-edge repair for both primary and secondary mitral regurgitation (PMR and SMR, respectively), identify rates and predictors of LVEF reduction, and estimate its impact on prognosis. Methods and Results In this international multicenter registry, patients with both PMR and SMR undergoing transcatheter mitral valve edge-to-edge repair were included.

Background: Reverse oblique fractures (AO/OTA 31-A3) account for 5-23% of all intertrochanteric fractures and are challenging to manage. The Gamma 3-Proximal Femoral Nail (GPFN) and the Trochanteric Fixation Nail Advanced (TFNA) are two common cephalomedullary systems used to treat this fracture. No study has reported on outcomes with the TFN-A for reverse oblique fractures.

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus which caused major epidemics in the Pacific and the Americas between 2013 and 2015. International travellers have previously acted as a sentinel population for Zika virus transmission in endemic areas, where local transmission may be incompletely captured by local surveillance systems. We report five recent European travellers returning from Thailand with Zika virus infection, highlighting the risk of ongoing endemic transmission in this popular tourist destination.

Objective: Evaluation of preeclampsia (PE) incidence among participants undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) after various cycles of sperm donation (SD) via intrauterine inseminations (IUI) or IVF.
Study Design: A retrospective case-control study was conducted at a single tertiary medical center between 2011 and 2019 which included participants who conceived via IVF using SD from a single sperm bank and had a successful singleton birth at Sheba Medical Center. The study cohort was divided into two groups: Group 1 (participants who conceived via IVF after 0-1 cycles of IUI or IVF from the same sperm donor) and Group 2 (participants who conceived via IVF after 2 or more cycles of IUI or IVF from the same sperm donor).

Brain metastasis still encompass very grim prognosis and therefore understanding the underlying mechanisms is an urgent need toward developing better therapeutic strategies. We uncover the intricate interactions between recruited innate immune cells and resident astrocytes in the brain metastatic niche that facilitate metastasis of melanoma and breast cancer. We show that granulocyte-derived lipocalin-2 (LCN2) induces inflammatory activation of astrocytes, leading to myeloid cell recruitment to the brain.
