Motor incoordination is frequently used as a behavioral index of intoxication by drugs that depress the central nervous system. Two tasks that have been used to assay incoordination in mice, the balance beam and the grid test, were evaluated to optimize aspects of apparatus and testing procedures for studying genetic differences. Mice of eight inbred strains were given one of several doses of ethanol or saline and tested for intoxication.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver disease is the leading indication for orthotopic liver transplantation worldwide. Recurrent HCV infection as defined by viremia after transplantation is nearly universal, with histologic evidence of recurrent hepatitis present in the majority. Although short-term survival appears to be similar to that in other causes of liver failure, it has recently been demonstrated that approximately 20-30% of HCV-positive patients develop allograft cirrhosis by 5 years.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) recurrence after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is common, although the majority of cases are mild. A subset of transplant recipients develops progressive allograft injury, including cirrhosis and allograft failure. Minimal data are available on the safety and efficacy of antiviral treatment in this group of patients.

Design: Retrospective study of consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic Heller myotomy with anterior fundoplication for achalasia between October 1995 and July 1999. A telephone survey assessed symptoms and satisfaction.

C57BL/6J (B6) inbred mice are well known to drink large amounts of alcohol (ethanol) voluntarily and to have only modest ethanol-induced withdrawal under fixed dose conditions. In contrast, DBA/2J (D2) mice are "teetotallers" and exhibit severe ethanol withdrawal. Speculation that an inverse genetic relationship existed between these two traits was substantiated by meta-analysis of existing data collected in multiple genetic models, including large panels of standard and recombinant inbred strains, their crosses, and selectively bred mouse lines.

Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping efforts in alcohol (ethanol) research are beginning to generate promising data that may ultimately lead to the identification of genes influencing alcohol addiction. Rodents have been extensively utilized to study ethanol's rewarding and aversive effects, and to demonstrate the existence of genetic influences on traits such as free-choice ethanol-consumption, ethanol-conditioned place preference and ethanol-conditioned taste aversion. The purpose of the current investigation was to verify or eliminate from further consideration putative QTLs for free-choice ethanol consumption originally identified in BXD Recombinant Inbred (RI) strains and other informative genetic crosses.
