Natural compounds have been attracting huge attention because of their broad therapeutic properties with specificity in their action in human health care as functional foods, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. However poor bioavailability and reduced bioactivity attributed to poor solubility and instability is the major drawback hindering the incorporation of these therapeutically potential molecules in novel drug delivery systems. Based on the findings of reported research investigations; complexation of poorly water soluble phytochemicals with cyclodextrins has emerged to be a promising approach to improve their aqueous solubility, stability, rate of dissolution and bioavailability.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common type of oral cancer; it involves damage to oral epithelial cells due to accumulation of multiple genetic mutations in the cells. OSCC remains major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with head and neck cancers. Tobacco, smoking, alcohol consumption alone or with chewing tobacco, and betel quid are potential carcinogens contributing to the high occurrence of OSCC.

Nanoparticles are being increasingly used in the field of cancer treatment due to their unique properties and advantages. The aim of the present research work was to prepare and characterize a polymeric albumin nanosystem for Cisplatin and evaluate its in-vitro efficacy against B16F10 melanoma. The developed nanoparticles were almost spherical in shape with a particle size in the range of 150-300 nm, low polydispersity values and about 80% drug entrapment efficiency.

The aim of the present research was to develop a bilayer tablet of venlafaxine hydrochloride for bimodal drug release. In the present investigation authors have tried to explore fenugreek mucilage (FNM) for bioadhesive sustained release layer. The attempt has been made to combine FNM with well studied bioadhesive polymers like hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), Carbopol, and Xanthan Gum.

Colonic drug delivery is intended not only for local treatment in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) but also for systemic delivery of therapeutics. Intestinal myeloperoxidase (MPO) determination could be used to estimate the average level of inflammation in colon as well as to determine the efficacy of drugs to be used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases or study the specificity of dosage forms to be used for colonic targeting of anti-inflammatory drugs. Colonic prodrug sulfasalazine (SASP) gets metabolized to give 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), which is the active portion of SASP.

Different mechanisms in cancer cells become resistant to one or more chemotherapeutics is known as multidrug resistance (MDR) which hinders chemotherapy efficacy. Potential factors for MDR includes enhanced drug detoxification, decreased drug uptake, increased intracellular nucleophiles levels, enhanced repair of drug induced DNA damage, overexpression of drug transporter such as P-glycoprotein(P-gp), multidrug resistance-associated proteins (MRP1, MRP2), and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP). Currently nanoassemblies such as polymeric/solid lipid/inorganic/metal nanoparticles, quantum dots, dendrimers, liposomes, micelles has emerged as an innovative, effective, and promising platforms for treatment of drug resistant cancer cells.

Hydrophobicity of PLA nanoparticles makes them a good substrate for macrophageal and reticulo-endothelial system uptake. Long-circulating properties can be imparted to these particles by coating them with hydrophilic stabilizers. Surface-modified PLA nanoparticles loaded with anti-cancer agent temozolomide were fabricated by solvent evaporation method and coated with surface modifiers.

As advancements in the field of nanoparticle imaging science are made, one of the first benefits will be in open and endoscopic conditions. There is considerable evidence indicating that the use of injected contrast agents can improve the detection of tumor margins and small metastases. New and innovative targeting and contrast agents including small molecules, antibodies and nanoparticles have to be developed for a broad range of tumor types such as breast, brain, pancreatic, and ovarian cancers.
