is an obligate intracellular parasite whose tachyzoite form causes disease via a lytic growth cycle. Its metabolic and cellular pathways are primarily designed to ensure parasite survival within a host cell. But during its lytic cycle, tachyzoites are exposed to the extracellular milieu and prolonged exposure requires activation of stress response pathways that include reprogramming the parasite proteome.

Sjogren's Syndrome and TAM Receptors: A Possible Contribution to Disease Onset.

J Immunol Res

December 2019

Department of Oral Biology, College of Dentistry, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic, progressive autoimmune disease featuring both organ-specific and systemic manifestations, the most frequent being dry mouth and dry eyes resulting from lymphocytic infiltration into the salivary and lacrimal glands. Like the related autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), SS patients and mouse models display accumulation of apoptotic cells and a Type I interferon (IFN) signature. Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) of the Tyro3, Axl, and Mer (TAM) family are present on the surface of macrophages and dendritic cells and participate in phagocytosis of apoptotic cells (efferocytosis) and inhibition of Type I IFN signaling.

Open Rheumatol J

January 2017

Immco Diagnostics / Trinity Biotech, Buffalo, NY, USA; Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences, SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, Buffalo, NY, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Antibodies to salivary gland proteins (SP1, CA6, PSP) were discovered in an animal model of Sjogren's syndrome (SS) and are present in some patients with SS, particularly those with early stages of the disease and low focus scores on lip biopsies.
  • The study aimed to evaluate these autoantibodies in patients with long-standing SS and with SS secondary to conditions like lupus and systemic sclerosis.
  • Results showed that while IgA anti-CA6 antibodies were found in 38% of patients, other antibodies were less common; these salivary gland antibodies may serve as better diagnostic markers than anti-Ro antibodies in secondary SS cases.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic and progressive multisystem autoimmune disease typically managed by rheumatologists. Diagnostic delays are common, due in large part to the non-specific and variable nature of SS symptoms and the slow progression of disease. The hallmark characteristics of SS are dry eye and dry mouth, but there are a broad range of other possible symptoms such as joint and muscle pain, skin rashes, chronic dry cough, vaginal dryness, extremity numbness or tingling, and disabling fatigue.
