Spondylolisthesis is a common condition with a prevalence of 4-6% in childhood and 5-10% in adulthood. The Meyerding Classification, developed in 1932, assigns grades (I to V) based on the degree of slippage observed on standing, neutral lateral lumbar radiographs. Despite its historical significance and reliability, more factors should be evaluated to predict spondylolisthesis progression, especially in low-grade cases.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is an abnormal coronal curvature of the spine that most commonly presents in adolescence. While it may be asymptomatic, AIS can cause pain, cosmetic deformity, and physical and psychological disability with curve progression. As adolescents with AIS enter adulthood, condition outcomes vary with some experiencing curve stabilization and others noting further curve progression, chronic pain, osteoporosis/fractures, declines in pulmonary and functional capacity, among others.

Cerebral syphilitic gumma is an atypical presentation of neurosyphilis, the clinical manifestations of which depend on the size and location of the lesions. It radiologically presents as enhancing nodular lesion(s) in brain parenchyma. We present a case of a patient with cerebral syphilitic gummas who had worsening neurological symptoms a few hours after initiation of anti-syphilitic antibiotic treatment.

The expansion of robotic surgery has led to developments in robotic-assisted breast reconstruction techniques. Specifically, robotic flap harvest is being evaluated to help maximize operative reliability and reduce donor site morbidity without compromising flap success. Many publications are feasibility studies or technical descriptions; few cohort analyses exist.

Immunosuppressive agents inhibit COVID-19 vaccine antibody (Ab) responses in patients with systemic rheumatic diseases. Rituximab may fully block Ab responses when B cells become undetected. The effect of detected but low number of B cells due to treatment with a B-cell agent (belimumab and/or rituximab) has not been established.

Effects of medications on hypoxia-inducible factor in the retina: A review.

Clin Exp Ophthalmol

April 2023

Jonas Children's Vision Care and Bernard & Shirlee Brown Glaucoma Laboratory, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, New York, New York, USA.

Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) plays a critical role in the mechanisms that allow cells to adapt to various oxygen levels in the environment. Specifically, HIF-1⍺ has shown to be widely involved in cellular repair, survival, and energy metabolism. HIF-1⍺ has also been found in increased levels in cancer cells, highlighting the importance of balance in the hypoxic response.

Having Patience With Our Patients: A Key Technique in Cast Saw Burn Prevention.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

August 2022

From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY (Weisberg, and Gordon), SUNY Downstate Medical School, Brooklyn, NY (Vingan), and Department of Orthopaedics, Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Hartford, CT (Lee).

Introduction: Although regarded as conservative treatment, casting is not without risk. Injuries may be sustained during application, during cast valving, through the immobilization process, or during cast removal. We developed an experimental model to investigate safe parameters for the appropriate length of time between fiberglass cast application and bivalving for cast saw use.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the lifetime trauma experiences of emergency department (ED) patients, revealing that clinicians often overlook such backgrounds when treating physical injuries.
  • Out of 1,282 participants, 204 reported experiencing trauma, resulting in 343 recorded instances, which revealed three main themes: workplace trauma, coercion, and trauma connections, with a lesser theme of witnessing trauma.
  • The findings suggest a high prevalence of trauma among ED patients, emphasizing the need for integrating trauma-informed care in emergency settings and highlighting the ED as a potential resource for connecting trauma survivors to care services.

Prior skin image datasets have not addressed patient-level information obtained from multiple skin lesions from the same patient. Though artificial intelligence classification algorithms have achieved expert-level performance in controlled studies examining single images, in practice dermatologists base their judgment holistically from multiple lesions on the same patient. The 2020 SIIM-ISIC Melanoma Classification challenge dataset described herein was constructed to address this discrepancy between prior challenges and clinical practice, providing for each image in the dataset an identifier allowing lesions from the same patient to be mapped to one another.
