Background: The consequences of failed nonoperative management of appendicitis in older patients have not been described.
Methods: We used the 2004-2017 National Inpatient Sample to identify acute appendicitis patients managed nonoperatively (<65 years old: 32,469; ≥65 years old: 11,265). Outcomes included morbidity, length of stay (LOS), inpatient costs, and discharge to skilled facilities.

Background: Current histopathological classification and TNM staging have limited accuracy in predicting survival and stratifying patients for appropriate treatment. The goal of the study is to determine whether the expression pattern of functionally important regulatory proteins can add additional values for more accurate classification and prognostication of non-small lung cancer (NSCLC).

Dapsone, a synthetic sulfone that has been available for over 60 years, has been used to treat a myriad of cutaneous disorders. Prior to the general acceptance of isotretinoin, oral dapsone had been reported to be effective in the treatment of nodulocystic acne. The effect of alkaline stress, or an increase in extracellular pH (pHext), on cell viability is poorly defined. Human pulmonary artery endothelial cells (HPAEC) were subjected to alkaline stress using different methods of increasing pHext. Viability and mode of cell death following alkaline stress were determined by assessing nuclear morphology, ultrastructural features, and caspase-3 activity.

Opiates suppress TSH in experimental animals but are reported to increase TSH in human subjects. We describe a patient in severe pain treated with morphine, whose previously normal TSH fell to a level usually associated with hyperthyroidism. After returning to a normal concentration, TSH again decreased with morphine administration.
