Anemia is a common complication of cancer. Treatment of anemia in cancer is crucial as anemia adversely affects the quality of life, therapeutic outcomes, and overall survival. Erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs) are valuable drugs for treating cancer-related anemia.

Postoperative venous thromboembolism event increases risk of readmissions and reoperation following total joint arthroplasty: a propensity-matched cohort study.

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Adult Reconstruction, NYU Langone Health, 301 East 17th Street, New York, NY, 10003, USA.

Purpose: The clinical impact of postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) remains unclear. In this study, we evaluate the effect of VTE following TJA on postoperative outcomes including discharge disposition, readmission rates, and revision rates.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients over the age of 18 who underwent primary, elective THA or TKA between 2013 and 2020.

Background: Ischemic strokes result in significant healthcare expenditures (direct costs) and loss of quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) (indirect costs). Interventional therapy has demonstrated improved functional outcomes in patients with large vessel occlusions (LVOs), which are likely to reduce the economic burden of strokes.

Objective: To develop a novel real-world dollar model to assess the direct and indirect cost-benefit of mechanical embolectomy compared with medical treatment with intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (IV tPA) based on shifts in modified Rankin scores (mRS).

Aortic dissection is a rare but potentially fatal complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Management strategies of PCI induced dissection are not clearly identified in literature; such occurrences often mandate surgical repair of the aortic root with reimplantation of the coronary arteries. Another trend seen in case reports is the use of coronary-aortic stenting if such lesions permit.

Acute airway obstruction in the adult can be caused by a rapidly enlarging laryngeal cyst that may present unusually as a midline neck mass. In this case report we present a different surgical technique for the removal of a large combined laryngocele via midline transcervical approach that did not require laryngofissure. This technique allowed simple and fast access, excellent exposure and complete removal of the lesion without resection of thyroid cartilage or associated morbidities.

Massive gastrointestinal hemorrhage secondary to metastatic renal cell carcinoma involving the jejunum is rare but has been previously described in the medical literature. Treatment options for metastatic renal cell carcinoma are limited, but transcatheter arterial embolization can be performed to control gastrointestinal hemorrhage either alone or prior to surgical resection. We describe a case of successful transcatheter arterial embolization for control of massive gastrointestinal hemorrhage secondary to locally recurrent renal cell carcinoma invading the jejunum and review the literature.

Up to one third of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) develop type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). This prevalence is much higher than that observed in the general population, and in patients with other chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis B virus, alcoholic liver disease, and primary biliary cirrhosis. Further, HCV seropositivity in patients with DM appears to be higher than in the general population.

Diabetes is a major public health problem that is approaching epidemic proportions in our society and worldwide. Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in people with diabetes. Control of cardiovascular disease risk factors is achieved only in a minority of patients.
