Sex and Biology: Broader Impacts Beyond the Binary.

What are the implications of misunderstanding sex as a binary, and why is it essential for scientists to incorporate a more expansive view of biological sex in our teaching and research? This roundtable will include many of our symposium speakers, including biologists and intersex advocates, to discuss these topics and visibilize the link between ongoing reification of dyadic sex within scientific communities and the social, political, and medical oppression faced by queer, transgender, and especially intersex communities. As with the symposium as a whole, this conversation is designed to bring together empirical research and implementation of equity, inclusion, and justice principles, which are often siloed into separate rooms and conversations at academic conferences. Given the local and national attacks on the rights of intersex individuals and access to medical care and bodily autonomy, this interdisciplinary discussion is both timely and urgent.

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Objective: Per- and polyfluoro-alkyl substances (PFAS) and lead (Pb) are ubiquitous environmental toxicants with apparent impact on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. As one possible mechanism for this increased risk, we have previously demonstrated an association between Pb exposure and heightened cardiovascular reactivity to acute psychological stress, a CVD risk factor. Aim: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis assessing whether vision and/or eye disorders are associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Method: Based on a pre-registered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42022328485), we searched PubMed, Web of Knowledge/Science, Ovid Medline, Embase and APA PsycINFO up to 5 February 2022, with no language/type of document restrictions. We included observational studies 1) reporting at least one measure of vision in people of any age with a diagnosis of ASD based on DSM or ICD criteria, or ADOS; or 2) reporting the prevalence of ASD in people with and without vision disorders.

Cellular homeostasis relies on both the chaperoning of proteins and the intracellular degradation system that delivers cytoplasmic constituents to the lysosome, a process known as autophagy. The crosstalk between these processes and their underlying regulatory mechanisms is poorly understood. Here, we show that the molecular chaperone heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) forms a complex with the autophagy-initiating kinase Atg1 (yeast)/Ulk1 (mammalian), which suppresses its kinase activity.

Forest stands infested by emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, experience extensive mortality of mature ash trees. Post-invasion woodlands commonly have a small contingent of mature lingering ash, an orphaned cohort of seedlings/saplings, and low EAB densities. The wine-making industry drives tourism and rural revitalization in several countries. Meanwhile, winemaking generates wastewater at all production stages, mainly from cleaning of equipment, floors, vessels, and bottles. This review presents a comprehensive analysis with statistical characteristics on the overall quality and generation rate of winery wastewater since 2007, identifies the technologies used by wineries in pilot- and full-scale wastewater treatment systems, and offers insights on practical wastewater treatment at small wineries.

Green, renewable, and sustainable materials are needed for removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in water. Herein, we synthesized and tested alginate (ALG) and chitosan (CTN) based and polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized fibers/aerogels for the adsorption of mixtures of 12 PFASs (9 short- and long-chain PFAAs, GenX, and 2 precursors) from water at an initial concentration of 10 μg/L each. Out of 11 biosorbents, ALGPEI-3 and GTH CTNPEI aerogels had the best sorption performance.

Conservation of migratory species exhibiting wide-ranging and multidimensional behaviors is challenged by management efforts that only utilize horizontal movements or produce static spatial-temporal products. For the deep-diving, critically endangered eastern Pacific leatherback turtle, tools that predict where turtles have high risks of fisheries interactions are urgently needed to prevent further population decline. Carbon capture storage and utilization (CCSU) has the potential to become a key tool to mitigate climate change, thus, aiding in achieving the objectives of the 2015 Paris Agreement. Even though the relevant remediation technology has achieved technical maturity to a certain extent, implementation of CCSU on a larger scale is currently limited because of non-technical parameters that include cost, legalization, lack of storage reservoir, and market mechanism to penalize CO emitter. Among these, cost emerges as the primary barrier to the dissemination of CCSU.

The accurate estimation of plant transpiration is critical to the fields of hydrology, plant physiology and ecology. Among the various methods of measuring transpiration in the field, the sap flow methods based on head pulses offers a cost-effective and energy-efficient option to directly measure the plant-level movement of water through the hydraulically active tissue. While authors have identified several possible sources of error in these measurements, one of the most common sources is misalignment of the sap flow probes due to user error.
