Behcet's disease (BD) is a chronic multi-systemic disease characterized by relapsing-remitting oral ulcers, genital ulcers, ocular inflammatory involvements, and numerous other systemic features. Ocular involvements are quite common in BD and may cause severe tissue damage and potentially blindness. Even though the pathogenesis of BD remains ambiguous, growing evidences have shown that genetic factors, environmental triggers and immunological abnormalities play significant roles in its development and progression.

Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) derived longitudinal strain (LS) and noninvasive pressure-strain loop (PSL) derived myocardial work (MW) are more sensitive than conventional echocardiographic parameters in quantitative assessment of early myocardial dysfunction. The aim of this study was to assess left ventricular (LV) global and regional myocardial function in symptomatic chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) patients using the two promising methods. Transthoracic echocardiography was performed on patients with angina or equivalent symptoms before coronary angiography.

ShallowHRD status acts as an effective prognostic predictor in ovarian cancer patients treated by poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPis).

J Cancer Res Clin Oncol

November 2023

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Six Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, 2 Heng Road, Yuan Village, Tianhe District, Guangzhou, 510655, China.

Purpose: Homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) plays a crucial role in ovarian cancer patients who are treated with Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPis). It could be defined as a prognosis biomarker. However, many high throughput sequencing methods for evaluating HRD, including HRDetect (WGS 10X), SigMA (WGS 40X or panel 1000X), and scarHRD (WGS 30X), are technically complex, time and data-storage consuming, and costly.

Article Synopsis
  • High triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) is linked to an increased risk of heart failure, but its long-term effects are not fully understood.
  • A study involving over 56,000 participants evaluated the relationship between cumulative TyG index levels and the development of heart failure over a median follow-up of 10 years.
  • Results indicated that higher cumulative TyG index significantly increased heart failure risk, with stronger associations seen in participants with higher body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference.

Effects of aerobic and combined aerobic-resistance exercise on motor function in sedentary older adults: A randomized clinical trial.

J Back Musculoskelet Rehabil

January 2024

Provincial University Key Laboratory of Sport and Health Science, School of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Fujian Normal University, Fuzhou, Fujian, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Sedentary behavior in older adults contributes to motor function decline, prompting an investigation into how regular exercise might help improve this condition.* -
  • The study involved 60 healthy older adults (ages 65-80), divided into three groups: aerobic exercise, combined aerobic-resistance exercise, and a health education group, with exercise sessions held five days a week for 24 weeks.* -
  • Results showed that both exercise groups improved lower limb strength and balance, but did not significantly alter gait parameters; the combined group performed better in dual-task gait speed and stability.*

Background: Immune cell heterogenicity is known to determine the therapeutic response to cancer progression. Neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy (NACI) has shown clinical benefits in some patients with advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), but the underlying mechanism behind this clinical response is unknown. The efficacy of NACI needs to be potentiated by identifying accurate biomarkers to predict clinical responses.

Background And Objective: Sedentary behavior is of increasing concern in older patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) due to its potential adverse effects on cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and motor function. While regular exercise has been shown to improve the health of individuals with T2DM, the most effective exercise program for elderly sedentary patients with T2DM remains unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the impact of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT), and guideline-based physical activity programs on the cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and motor function of this specific population.

Background: Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, there remains uncertainty about the efficiency of GLP-1 RAs in patients with heart failure (HF).

Methods: Randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) that reported the effect of GLP-1 RAs on prognosis in patients with HF were identified by searching databases.

Vascular calcification is the abnormal deposition of calcium phosphate complexes in blood vessels, which is regarded as the pathological basis of multiple cardiovascular diseases. The flowing blood exerts a frictional force called shear stress on the vascular wall. Blood vessels have different hydrodynamic properties due to discrepancies in geometric and mechanical properties.

Hnrnpk is essential for embryonic limb bud development as a transcription activator and a collaborator of insulator protein Ctcf.

Cell Death Differ

October 2023

Department of Spine Surgery, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Orthopedics and Traumatology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, 510080, China.

Proper development of the limb bud relies on the concordance of various signals, but its molecular mechanisms have not yet been fully illustrated. Here we report that heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNPK) is essential for limb bud development. Its ablation in the limb bud results in limbless forelimbs and severe deformities of the hindlimbs.

Background: Intraoperative hypothermia is a common but severe condition that is defined as a core body temperature below 36 °C. Accidental hypothermia can produce coagulopathy, immunosuppression and peripheral hypoperfusion that can ultimately lead to life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias and vital organ injury, and it is significantly associated with perioperative complications and mortality.

Case Description: We report the case of an 82-year-old man who presented with persistent ventricular tachycardia intraoperatively due to accidental hypothermia.

Objectives: Circular RNAs (circRNAs), with their multilevel and versatile regulation, have emerged as promising targets for treating complex and heterogeneous malignancies such as oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). It is crucial to explore the function of key circRNAs and elucidate the underlying mechanisms to establish an effective in vivo delivery system to better utilize circRNAs as cancer treatment strategies.

Materials And Methods: circRNA (circ-OCAC) was identified as significantly downregulated in tumor samples compared to paracancerous tissues by RNA-seq analysis of eight pairs of OSCC tissues.
