Early spontaneous abortion (ESA) is a common adverse pregnancy outcome mainly attributed to embryo chromosomal abnormalities. However, as a quantitative marker, whether the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) can reflect oocyte quality is still controversial. By integrating biological evidence and adjusting many cofounders, this study aimed to clarify the controversies about the association between AMH and ESA caused by embryo aneuploidy during assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment.

Optimizing the management of electrophysiology labs in Chinese hospitals using a discrete event simulation tool.

BMC Health Serv Res

January 2024

Health Economic Research Institute, Sun Yat-sen University, 132 East Waihuan Road, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, 510006, PR China.

Background: The growing demand for electrophysiology (EP) treatment in China presents a challenge for current EP care delivery systems. This study constructed a discrete event simulation (DES) model of an inpatient EP care delivery process, simulating a generalized inpatient journey of EP patients from admission to discharge in the cardiology department of a tertiary hospital in China. The model shows how many more patients the system can serve under different resource constraints by optimizing various phases of the care delivery process.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with several types of human cancer including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The activation of EBV to the lytic cycle has been observed in advanced NPC and is believed to contribute to late-stage NPC development. However, how EBV lytic cycle promotes NPC progression remains elusive.

NLRP3 (NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3), a member of the nucleotide-binding domain (NOD) and leucine-rich repeat sequence (LRR) protein (NLR) family, plays an essential role in the inflammation initiation and inflammatory mediator secretion, and thus is also associated with many disease progressions. Food-derived bioactive peptides (FDBP) exhibit excellent anti-inflammatory activity in both and models. They are encrypted in plant, meat, and milk proteins and can be released under enzymatic hydrolysis or fermentation conditions, thereby hindering the progression of hyperuricemia, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic liver disease, neurological disorders, lung injury and periodontitis by inactivating the NLRP3.

  • * A study involving 251,825 participants showed that higher LE8 scores were significantly associated with a reduced risk of developing CKD over an average follow-up of 12.8 years.
  • * The findings indicate that better cardiovascular health, as measured by LE8, correlates with a lower likelihood of CKD, regardless of a person's genetic risk for the disease.

Macrophage Heterogeneity and Its Impact on Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: An Integrative Review.

J Inflamm Res

December 2023

Cardiovascular Department, the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, People's Republic of China.

The coronary reperfusion following acute myocardial infarction can paradoxically trigger myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. This complex phenomenon involves the intricate interplay of different subsets of macrophages. These macrophages are crucial players in the post-infarction inflammatory response and subsequent myocardial anti-inflammatory repair.

  • - The study evaluated the effects of Zishen Yutai Pill (ZYP) on pregnancy outcomes in women undergoing fresh embryo transfer in a randomized clinical trial involving 2,265 participants across 19 IVF centers.
  • - Results indicated that ZYP significantly improved clinical pregnancy rates, particularly in subgroups of older women (≥ 35 years) and overweight/obese patients (BMI > 24), showing enhanced rates of implantation and biochemical pregnancies.
  • - The findings suggest that ZYP may provide clinical benefits for women in advanced maternal age and those who are overweight or obese during assisted reproductive technology treatments.

Fibular free flap necrosis after mandibular reconstruction surgery with osteoradionecrosis: Establishment and verification of an early warning model.

J Stomatol Oral Maxillofac Surg

June 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stomatological Hospital, School of Stomatology, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, PR China. Electronic address:

Objective: Fibular free flap necrosis (FFFN) is the most common complication in patients with osteoradionecrosis (ORN) after mandibular reconstruction surgery. However, there are no effective forecasting tools at present. This research is aimed to establish and verify a nomogram model to predict the risk of FFFN after mandibular reconstruction surgery in ORN patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the safety of fertility-sparing surgery (FSS) in patients with stage I endometrioid epithelial cancer (EEOC) and mucinous ovarian cancer (MOC).
  • It analyzed data from 970 EEOC and 810 MOC patients, showing FSS did not significantly affect overall survival (OS) compared to radical surgery in both cancer types.
  • The findings suggest that FSS is a safe option for young patients with early-stage EEOC or MOC who want to preserve their fertility.

Purpose: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in children. Despite cure rates of higher than 85 %, refractory or relapsed ALL still exhibits a bleak prognosis indicative of the dearth of treatment modalities specific for relapsed or refractory ALL. Prior research has implicated metabolic alterations in leukemia pathogenesis, and literature on the therapeutic efficacy of arsenic compounds targeting metabolic pathways in B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) cells is scarce.

Patient-derived organoids as personalized avatars and a potential immunotherapy model in cervical cancer.

iScience

November 2023

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510080, Guangdong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cervical cancer is a major health concern in developing countries, and creating an accurate preclinical model for its tumors has been difficult.
  • - Researchers developed a biobank of patient-derived organoids (PDOs) from 67 cases of cervical cancer that accurately reflect the tumors' characteristics and responses to treatment.
  • - The study shows that co-culturing these organoids with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes can help predict responses to adoptive T cell therapy, indicating the PDOs' potential use in guiding future cervical cancer treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • Elevated insulin resistance and blood pressure are linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD), but how they influence each other over time and their combined effect on CVD risk is not fully understood.
  • A large study analyzed data from over 56,000 participants to investigate the relationship between insulin levels (measured by the Triglyceride-Glucose Index) and blood pressure over a period of 4 years.
  • Results showed that higher insulin resistance predicted increased blood pressure more strongly than the reverse, and both high insulin resistance and elevated blood pressure were associated with a greater risk of developing CVD over nearly 10 years of follow-up.
