December 2024

Institute of Disease-Oriented Nutritional Research, Guangzhou Red Cross Hospital, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have adverse effects on the development of diabetic complications. Berberine (BBR), a natural alkaloid, has demonstrated its ability to promote the delayed healing of skin wounds. However, the impact of BBR on AGEs-induced ferroptosis in skin cells and the underlying molecular mechanisms remains unexplored.

December 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Shenshan Medical Center, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Shanwei, Guangdong, P. R. China.

Background: Hypercoagulability has been shown to act as an important component of ulcerative colitis (UC) pathogenesis and disease activity, and is strongly correlated with the occurrence of venous thromboembolism (VTE). This study aimed at providing novel therapeutic clues for hypercoagulable active UC.

Methods: The coagulation score model was developed using VTE cohorts, and the predictive performance of this model was evaluated by coagulation subtypes of UC patients, which were clustered by the unsupervised method.

Multi-stain deep learning prediction model of treatment response in lupus nephritis based on renal histopathology.

Kidney Int

December 2024

Department of Pediatrics, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. Electronic address:

The response of the kidney after induction treatment is one of the determinants of prognosis in lupus nephritis, but effective predictive tools are lacking. Here, we sought to apply deep learning approaches on kidney biopsies for treatment response prediction in lupus nephritis. Patients who received cyclophosphamide or mycophenolate mofetil as induction treatment were included and the primary outcome was 12-month treatment response, complete response defined as 24h urinary protein under 0.

Oncolytic therapy, inducing cell death via cell membrane lysis, holds considerable promise in cancer treatment. However, achieving precise control over the structure and function of oncolytic materials for highly selective oncolytic therapy is a key challenge in the context of the subtle differences between tumor and normal tissues/cells. Herein, we report the development of pH-ultrasensitive oncolytic polyesters (pOPs) with an alternating sequence of ionizable and hydrophobic groups.

Bulk and Single-Cell Transcriptome Analyses Unravel Gene Signatures of Mitochondria-Associated Programmed Cell Death in Diabetic Foot Ulcer.

J Cell Mol Med

December 2024

Department of Orthopedics, Shenshan Medical Center, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Shanwei, Guangdong, P. R. China.

Mitochondrial programmed cell death (PCD) plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). In this study, we performed a comprehensive transcriptome analysis to identify potential hub genes and key cell types associated with PCD and mitochondria in DFU. Using intersection analysis of PCD- and mitochondria-related genes, we identified candidate hub genes through protein-protein interaction and random forest analysis.

Background: Cognitive impairment is a common and feared characteristic of aging processes, and one key mechanism of cognition is hippocampal synaptic structure. Previous studies have reported that gut microbiota dysbiosis occurred in neurodegenerative diseases and other brain disorders with cognitive impairment. However, it is not clear how gender differences affect cognitive impairment in aging processes and whether they affect synaptic structure and gut microbiota.

Up to half of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, for which effective treatment options are lacking, resulting in a poor prognosis. Over the past few years, the combination of immune checkpoint inhibitors and anti-angiogenic targeted therapy has proven highly efficacious in treating advanced HCC, significantly extending patients' survival and providing a potential for sequential curative surgery. After sequential curative hepatectomy or liver transplantation following conversion therapy, patients can receive long-term survival benefits.

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Malignant Tumor Epigenetics and Gene Regulation, Guangdong-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory for RNA Medicine, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou 510120, China.

X-ray crystallography is a fundamental technique that provides atomic-level insights into RNA structures. However, obtaining crystals of RNA structures diffracting to high resolution is challenging. We introduce a simple strategy to enhance the resolution limit of RNA crystals by the selective substitution of Watson-Crick pairs by GU pairs within RNA sequences.

CD8+ T-cell abundance is insufficient to assess antitumor immunity and shows poor performance in predicting breast cancer prognosis and immunotherapy response, presumably owing to the complexity of CD8+ T-cell functionalities. While single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) can dissect the multifaceted functions of CD8+ T cells for better immune assessment, its clinical application is limited. Herein, we developed bulk RNA-seq-based FuncDimen models from integrative analysis of scRNA-seq and matched bulk RNA-seq data, to evaluate CD8+ T-cell functionalities across 5 dimensions: tumor reactivity, cytotoxicity, IFN-γ secretion, proliferation, and apoptosis.
