Microincisional cataract surgery and Thinoptx rollable intraocular lens implantation.

Background: Microincisional cataract surgery is a safe procedure with a very short learning period for an experienced cataract surgeon and rollable ultrathin intraocular lenses eliminate the need for enlargement of corneal incision. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of cataract surgery through a corneal microincision and implantation of rollable ultrathin intraocular lenses. The setting was Dokuz Eylul University Medical Faculty, Ophthalmology Department, Izmir, Turkey and SSK Okmeydani Hospital, Ophthalmology Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey.

Demographic analysis and outcome features in a transplant outpatient clinic.

Aim: This retrospective report analyzed the demographic features of kidney transplant outpatients grafted in Turkey and in different regions of the world.

Methods: The patients were divided into 4 groups: Every cohort was subgrouped as either receiving a cadaveric (CT) or a live donor transplant (LT) performed in our institute (ICT, n = 147, ILT, n = 304), other institutions in Turkey (TCT, n = 16, TLT, n = 86), or in a foreign country (FCT, n = 66, FLT, n = 154).

Results: Among the patients with functional grafts, FLT transplantations, of which the vast majority were paid transplantations, constituted the second largest group (n = 105) following ILT (n = 214).

Effect of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy on serum prostate specific antigen concentration.

Purpose: We investigated the effect of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) on the serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) concentration.

Patients And Methods: A total of 22 male patients with a mean age of 52.9 years (range 37-67 years) were treated with SWL for distal ureteral calculi close to the ureteral orifice.

Lateral shelf acetabuloplasty in the treatment of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

Although head containment is extremely important for the development of the acetabulum and femoral head, there are debates about conservative and surgical treatment. Shelf acetabuloplasty is an effective means of treatment as regards the coverage of the femoral head within the acetabulum, which is the most important issue for the normal development of the hip joint. Nineteen hips of 18 patients were evaluated radiographically using the acetabulum-head index of Heyman and Herndon and the center-edge angle for containment.

Tizanidine is an effective agent in the prevention of focal cerebral ischemia in rats: an experimental study.

Background: Focal cerebral ischemia secondary to cerebral vessel occlusion is still an important cause of mortality and morbidity. Excitatory neurotransmitters are gathered in the extracellular space during ischemia and initiate or stimulate a series of pathophysiological biochemical processes and consequently lead to neuronal death. Tizanidine (Sandoz compound DS 103-282, 5-chloro4,2 (2-imidazolin-2-yl-amino)-2,1,3-benzothiazol hydrochloride) is a selective alpha 2 adrenoreceptor agonist which shows its effect by stimulating presynaptic alpha 2 adrenoreceptors in central ASPergic and GLUergic system by inhibiting aspartic acid and glutamic acid release.

Laser photocoagulation for persistent central serous retinopathy: results of long-term follow-up.

Purpose: The authors evaluated the effect of laser photocoagulation for persistent central serous retinopathy (CSR).

Methods: The authors evaluated 45 eyes of 38 patients who had been offered laser photocoagulation for CSR that did not resolve after 4 months of observation. Sixteen eyes of 14 patients who did not accept laser photocoagulation were followed as the control group.

Associated ocular findings in pericentral pigmentary retinopathy.

Macular complications occurred in two isolated patients who had pericentral pigmentary retinopathy. One patient demonstrated bilateral bull's-eye maculopathy and a unilateral full-thickness macular hole. Later, she developed central retinal artery occlusion in the fellow eye.

Renal hemodynamics in patients with obstructive uropathy evaluated by color Doppler sonography.

Objectives: Prior animal studies have shown through direct pressure measurements that there is a definite rise in the renal vascular resistance in obstruction. Therefore intrarenal hemodynamic changes can be determined by the vascular impedance expressed as pulsatility and resistive indexes (PI and RI) obtained from the Doppler waveforms of intrarenal arteries. We investigated whether various degrees of obstruction result in different hemodynamic responses according to color Doppler sonography.

Value of color Doppler sonography in the diagnosis of venous impotence.

The gold standard in the diagnosis of venous impotence is cavernosometry. But a less invasive and time-consuming screening test for patients with a high probability of venous impotence is required. Therefore we evaluated 82 men with erectile dysfunction by color Doppler sonography after intracavernosal injection of 60 mg papaverine.

Treatment of diabetic macular edema: a comparison between argon and dye lasers.

To compare the efficacy of argon green and dye yellow photocoagulations, 85 eyes of 85 diabetic patients with diffuse macular edema were included in a prospective randomized clinical trial. One year after treatment, visual acuity was unchanged or better in 85.1% of eyes treated with an argon and 89.

Definition and treatment of chordee without hypospadias: a report of 5 cases.

The controversies in chordee without hypospadias are mostly focussed on the definition and treatment of type I and type IV chordee. In this respect we believe that surgical exploration is necessary to make a precise classification leading to the most appropriate therapy. We present 5 cases, 3 of which had type I chordee, 1 had type II and 1 had type III.

Sacral agenesis with imperforate anus and its late complication: neuropathic bladder.

The authors report a rare case of imperforate anus as a congenital anomaly. Early diagnosis and close follow up are emphasized, in order to prevent the development of complications which may last for a lifetime.
