Preventive effect of intravesical ozone supplementation on n-methyl-n-nitrosourea-induced non-muscle invasive bladder cancer in male rats.

Although non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is widely seen in men, most laboratory studies of new intravesical therapies to prevent NMIBC have been conducted on female animals. In addition, ozone (O) has been shown to be a beneficial agent as an intravesical application in the treatment of various disorders. In the current study, we evaluated the immunohistopathological and oxidative-antioxidative effects of intravesical O treatment on n-methyl-n-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced NMIBC.

The authors describe a technique for using a single-piece hydrophilic foldable acrylic lens with no eyelets for scleral fixation.

Evaluation of radiotherapy response of cervical carcinoma with gray scale and color Doppler ultrasonography: resistive index correlation with magnetic resonance findings.

Purpose: To investigate the role of the resistive index measured with transvaginal color Doppler ultrasonography (TVCDUS) for assessing the radiotherapy response of cervical carcinoma and to compare it with magnetic resonance findings.

Materials And Methods: A total of 13 patients with advanced stage cervical carcinoma (>IIA) underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and TVCDUS exams 6 months prior to and 6 months after radiotherapy. Pre- and post-treatment resistive indices obtained from the central and peripheral zones of the tumor were compared.

An evaluation of individual plain abdominal radiography findings in pediatric appendicitis: results from a series of 424 children.

Background: This study was conducted to collect the results of the plain abdominal radiography (PAR) signs, to determine their individual diagnostic values, and to discuss them under a brief literature review.

Methods: Eight predetermined PAR signs were individually interpreted in a series of 424 consecutive children (278 males; 146 females; median age 10 years; range 11 months to 17 years) who underwent an operation for appendicitis. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for the signs were determined.

Acute effect of nebulized budesonide in asthmatic children.

The acute anti-inflammatory effects of inhaled steroids at high doses and their use at home and as emergency treatment of acute asthma attacks in children have been evaluated in many clinical studies. However very little is known about their additional bronchodilator response to systemic steroids plus nebulized salbutamol in the early management in children. Asthmatic patients aged between 5-15 years were investigated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled fashion.

Spontaneous infarction of a pleomorphic adenoma in parotid gland: diagnostic problems and review.

Although infarction of parotid gland pleomorphic adenoma (PA) following fine-needle aspiration (FNA) has been well-documented, spontaneous infarction of PA has remained as an uncommon entity in the literature. To our knowledge, we report the second case of spontaneous infarction occurring in a parotid gland PA. A 44-yr-old man presented with a 2-yr history of slowly enlarging right parotid mass, which had become painful 1 mo before performing FNA biopsy.

Local recurrence and survival rates after extended systematic lymph-node dissection for surgical treatment of rectal cancer.

Background/aims: Extended systematic lymph-node dissection (ESLND) is a surgical procedure aimed at decreasing the local recurrence rate of rectal cancer and increasing the survival rate. However, it is criticized because it has not shown the expected effects on survival, and it has been shown to increase the proportion of complications in rectal cancer surgery. This study was designed to determine incidence and patterns of recurrence after curative resection with or without ESLND for rectal cancer.

[Evaluation of 105 cases with tuberculous pleurisy].

Tuberculous pleurisy has still importance in the group of exudative pleurisy. In this study we aimed to evaluate clinical, radiological, biochemical, bacteriological and histopathological findings of 105 cases with tuberculous pleurisy retrospectively, between January 1999 and December 2002. Female/male ratio was approximately 1/9 and mean age was 32.

Does recurrent sinusitis lead to a sinusitis remodeling of the upper airways in asthmatic children with chronic rhinitis?

Background: There is a growing recognition that some patients with long-standing asthma may possess a component of irreversible airflow obstruction due to airway remodeling. The underlying chronic inflammation has been implicated as the cause of this process. In the upper airways, the inflammation presents itself with symptoms of chronic rhinitis, leading to recurrent sinusitis, in some patients.

AgNOR values are not helpful in the differential diagnosis of pituitary adenomas.

Nucleolar organizer regions (NOR) are chromosomal segments in which ribosomal RNA is encoded. AgNOR technique, which reveals these regions, has rarely been used in the diagnosis and preceding the prognosis of pituitary adenoma. The purpose of this study was to determine and evaluate the correlation of hormonal profile with AgNOR counts, the correlation of recurrence with AgNOR counts, and to determine the consistency between the evaluations of the two independent observers.
