Aim: To investigate the effect of intravenous frusemide on the course of transient tachypnoea of the newborn (TTN).

Methods: Fifty term infant with TTN were randomised at the time of diagnosis to receive either intravenous frusemide 2 mg/kg or saline placebo. Outcomes assessed included duration of supplemental oxygen requirement, the period of tachypnoea, time to discharge from hospital and weight loss in the first 24 h of life and before discharge.

An alternative noninvasive approach for the treatment of high-flow priapism in a child: duplex ultrasound-guided compression.

We are presenting a 5-year-old boy with a traumatic high-flow priapism developed after a straddle injury and successfully treated by compression and simultaneous monitoring with a duplex ultrasound probe. Local anesthesia for middle ear surgery.

The adequacy of anesthesia and comfort during surgery was assessed for 100 consecutive patients undergoing middle ear surgery using local anesthesia, both by the patients themselves and by the surgeon. The possibility of inducing an iatrogenic facial weakness was also evaluated. Both the surgeon and the majority of patients were pleased with the quality of anesthesia and little adverse effects occurred as a consequence of local anesthesia itself.

The effect of the antiangiogenic agent paclitaxel on the healing of colonic anastomoses was studied in a rat model. Ninety-six rats underwent end-to-end colonic anastomoses, and healing was evaluated by measuring bursting pressure, hydroxyproline content, and number of newly formed vessels. Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of macroplastique injection with artificial urinary sphincter implantation (AUS) for treatment of postprostatectomy incontinence (PPI).

Methods: A prospective randomized clinical trial including 45 patients with PPI was performed secondary to radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP), transvesical prostatectomy (TVP), transurethral prostatectomy (TURP), and TURP with TVP, in 12, 16, 16, 1 patients respectively. A new skin flap design for the repair of proximal phalanx base defects in flexion contractures of adjacent fingers.

A random-pattern cutaneous flap with its base at the highly vascularized dorsal web space has been designed to decrease donor site deformity and to increase securely flap mobilization in contractures involving more than 1 adjacent proximal phalanx base. Rectangular flaps facing each other on the lateral sides of adjacent fingers have been raised on a single pedicle in the second, third, or fourth web space. The anatomic integrity of the web space was maintained and exposure of the metacarpophalangeal joints was avoided.
