Hemi-Ultrathin Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (Hemi-UT-DSAEK) Using Pediatric Donor Corneas: A Case Series.

Objective: We sought to evaluate the clinical outcomes of hemi-UT-DSAEK grafts from the pediatric donor corneas of patients affected by Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD).

Methods: A prospective, interventional case series was conducted at the Ophthalmology Department of Venice Civil Hospital and the Veneto Eye Bank Foundation (Venice, Italy). Six eyes of six patients affected by FECD received large-diameter, semicircular hemi-UT-DSAEK grafts obtained from three pediatric donor corneas using the standard pull-through method.

Efficacy of a long-term acting triptan for Headache attributed to aeroplane travel: a case report.

Headache attributed to aeroplane travel (AH) is a well-defined nosological entity whose diagnostic criteria have been published in the third provisional International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD) and confirmed in the definitive version. Despite the severe intensity of pain, less than half of the AH cases described used medications for preventing the attack. The most frequent prophylactic therapy spontaneously used by sufferers are simple analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and nasal decongestants, achieving a complete or partial benefit in about 50% of patients.

Vestibular assessment in sudden sensorineural hearing loss: Role in the prediction of hearing outcome and in the early detection of vascular and hydropic pathomechanisms.

Introduction: Predicting hearing outcome in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is challenging, as well as detecting the underlying pathomechanisms. SSNHL could be associated with vestibular damage since cochleo-vestibular structures share the same vascularization, along with being in close anatomical proximity. Whereas viral inflammations and autoimmune/vascular disorders most likely represent the involved aetiologies, early-stage Menière's disease (MD) can also present with SSNHL.

Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale to Evaluate the Functional Impairment of Patients With Subcortical Band Heterotopia: A Multicentric Cross-sectional Study.

Background: Subcortical band heterotopia (SBH) is a rare malformation of the cortical development characterized by a heterotopic band of gray matter between cortex and ventricles. The clinical presentation typically includes intellectual disability and epilepsy.

Rivaroxaban treatment for six weeks versus three months in patients with symptomatic isolated distal deep vein thrombosis: randomised controlled trial.

Objective: To compare two different treatment durations of rivaroxaban in patients with symptomatic isolated distal deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Design: Randomised, double blind, placebo controlled clinical trial.

Setting: 28 outpatient clinics specialising in venous thromboembolism.

Methods: Prospective, multicentre, open-label study. We evaluated the endothelial cell loss (ECL) as the percentage variation of the endothelial cell density (ECD, cells/mm) between 6 and 12 months after surgery, corneal transparency and thickness at 12 months, and adverse events within 12 months.

Clinical efficacy of different monoclonal antibody regimens among non-hospitalised patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 at high risk for disease progression: a prospective cohort study.

This study aimed to compare the clinical progression of COVID-19 in high-risk outpatients treated with the monoclonal antibodies (mAb) bamlanivimab, bamlanivimab-etesevimab and casirivimab-imdevimab. This is an observational, multi-centre, prospective study conducted from 18 March to 15 July 2021 in eight Italian tertiary-care hospitals including mild-to-moderate COVID-19 outpatients receiving bamlanivimab (700 mg), bamlanivimab-etesevimab (700-1400 mg) or casirivimab-imdevimab (1200-1200 mg). All patients were at high risk of COVID-19 progression according to Italian Medicines Agency definitions.

To determine the effectiveness of two methods to improve the microbial safety of human corneas preserved in organ culture. We compared the number of positive preservation solutions of corneas in organ culture in which the initial short-term hypothermic corneal maintenance solution was supplemented with amphotericin B 2.5 µg/mL and the historical data of microbial test results (2015-2019).

Perampanel may represent an effective treatment for the prevention of migraine comorbid with epilepsy.

Introduction: Migraine is a common comorbidity in patients with epilepsy. Considering the proven associations and the common pathophysiological features linking epilepsy and migraine, some anti-seizure medications (ASMs) have been considered as a treatment for both disorders. This study aimed at assessing both the effectiveness of perampanel (PER) on epileptic seizures and migraine attacks in patients with epilepsy and comorbid migraine, as well as the reduction in the monthly mean rate usage of rescue migraine medications.

Introduction: The main of the present study was to assess the effectiveness and tolerability of perampanel (PER) in association with 1 or 2 concomitant antiseizure medications (ASMs) in patients with epilepsy throughout a follow-up period of 24 months or longer in a real-world setting.

Methods: This retrospective, observational, multi-center study collected data from both underage (<18 years old) and adult patients who had started PER in association with 1 or 2 ASMs. Only patients who had started PER and were followed up for at least 24 months were included.

Case Report: Could Hennebert's Sign Be Evoked Despite Global Vestibular Impairment on Video Head Impulse Test? Considerations Upon Pathomechanisms Underlying Pressure-Induced Nystagmus due to Labyrinthine Fistula.

We describe a case series of labyrinthine fistula, characterized by Hennebert's sign (HS) elicited by tragal compression despite global hypofunction of semicircular canals (SCs) on a video-head impulse test (vHIT), and review the relevant literature. All three patients presented with different amounts of cochleo-vestibular loss, consistent with labyrinthitis likely induced by labyrinthine fistula due to different temporal bone pathologies (squamous cell carcinoma involving the external auditory canal in one case and middle ear cholesteatoma in two cases). Despite global hypofunction on vHIT proving impaired function for each SC for high accelerations, all patients developed pressure-induced nystagmus, presumably through spared and/or recovered activity for low-velocity canal afferents.

Upright BPPV Protocol: Feasibility of a New Diagnostic Paradigm for Lateral Semicircular Canal Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo Compared to Standard Diagnostic Maneuvers.

The diagnosis of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) involving the lateral semicircular canal (LSC) is traditionally entrusted to the supine head roll test, also known as supine head yaw test (SHYT), which usually allows identification of the pathologic side and BPPV form (geotropic vs. apogeotropic). Nevertheless, SHYT may not always allow easy detection of the affected canal, resulting in similar responses on both sides and intense autonomic symptoms in patients with recent onset of vertigo.

Background: Despite the pivotal role of radiotherapy in oncology, the provision of radiation treatments remains inadequate in many areas of the world. The present report is an assessment conducted among Radiation Oncology centers of Veneto region with the aim to collect information concerning radiotherapy assets and technological equipment availability.

Feasibility of Using the Video-Head Impulse Test to Detect the Involved Canal in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo Presenting With Positional Downbeat Nystagmus.

Positional downbeat nystagmus (pDBN) represents a relatively frequent finding. Its possible peripheral origin has been widely ascertained. Nevertheless, distinguishing features of peripheral positional nystagmus, including latency, paroxysm and torsional components, may be missing, resulting in challenging differential diagnosis with central pDBN.

Gout is the most prevalent form of inflammatory arthritis, with a strong impact on individual health and healthcare systems. This article reviews clinical and experimental evidences about gout emerged throughout the 2019. Starting with an epidemiological analysis, the review explores new insights on genetic factors influencing the development of gout flare, pathogenetic mechanisms, risk factors for the disease and comorbidities.

Shotgun sequencing to determine corneal infection.

Purpose: To investigate if shotgun-sequencing method could be useful in detailed diagnosis of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection and compare it with the conventional diagnostic method.

Observations: Using a sterile scraper, the infectious part of the ocular surface was scraped gently and placed on a glass slide for conventional diagnosis using PCR and histology and in RNA stabilizing reagent for shotgun sequencing respectively. Concentration of the DNA was determined using a sensitive fluorescence dye-based Qubit dsDNA HS Assay Kit.
