Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) represents a rare soft tissue entity, accounting for ⁓1% of all soft tissue malignancies. It is generally considered to have an even worse prognosis than bone osteosarcoma, therefore detailed investigations and proper treatment are required. ESOSs arising in the subcutaneous tissue are even rarer than the ones positioned in deep tissues, and they are considered to have far better outcomes.

The increase in industrial waste generation presents a global problem that is a consequence of the needs of modern society. To achieve the goals of the EU Green Deal and to promote the concept of circular economy (CE), the valorization of industrial residues as secondary raw materials offers a pathway to economic, environmental, energetic, and social sustainability. In this respect, Al-containing industrial residues from alumina processing (red mud), thermal power plants (fly ash and bottom ash), and metallurgy (slag), as well as other industries, present a valuable mineral resource which can be considered as secondary raw materials (SRMs) with the potential to be used in construction, supporting the concept of circular economy.

December 2024

Universidad de Navarra, Instituto de Biodiversidad y Medioambiente BIOMA, Irunlarrea 1, 31008 Pamplona, Spain.

The accumulation of nitrogen (N) in moss tissue has proven to be a reliable marker of increasing N deposition. However, this measurement does not offer additional data about the origin of pollution. In this respect, the analysis of the N isotopic ratios might be a helpful tool in providing supplementary information about the nature of the nitrogenous species in biomonitoring surveys.

Dynamic metabolic modeling of ATP allocation during viral infection.

bioRxiv

November 2024

Bioinformatics Program, Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences, Boston University, Boston, MA, USA.

Viral pathogens, like SARS-CoV-2, hijack the host's macromolecular production machinery, imposing an energetic burden that is distributed across cellular metabolism. To explore the dynamic metabolic tension between the host's survival and viral replication, we developed a computational framework that uses genome-scale models to perform dynamic Flux Balance Analysis of human cell metabolism during virus infections. Relative to previous models, our framework addresses the physiology of viral infections of non-proliferating host cells through two new features.

Here we present a highly versatile synthetic strategy based on twofold 6π-electrocyclization accompanied with HBr elimination as a novel approach towards centrosymmetric multi-heteroatom-doped nanographenes build around an electron-rich 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core. A straightforward synthesis from readily available substrates offers a unique possibility of fusing the 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole subunit not only with carbocyclic building blocks, such as electron-deficient phenanthrenes, chrysenes, or [4]helicenes, but also with heterocyclic systems, such as benzo[b]furan and 5-thiatruxene. The clear advantage of this strategy is that there is no requirement to assemble complex scaffolds possessing bromoaryl units since bromine atom is introduced by bromination of 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core which, because of its exceptionally electron-rich character, is straightforward reaction.
