Background: Study of the clinical application of bioactive glass in treating periodontal defects has been gaining momentum. Studies in the past have hypothesized that bioactive glass resulted in an improvement of bony lesion when compared with open flap debridement. Considering that there were very few studies in the Indian dental literature involving the analysis of PerioGlas®- A particulate Bioglass in intrabony defects, the present clinical trial aimed to clinically and radiographically evaluate the efficacy of PerioGlas® and compare it to open debridement as control in the treatment of human periodontal osseous (three and two wall) defects in South Indian population.

Facial and cervical area sinus tracts can be odontogenic or non-odontogenic, and so clinicians should be aware that lesions with a dental origin can be confused with dermatological lesions. We describe three cases of cutaneous lesions of dental origin that were initially misdiagnosed as being dermatological in origin. Multiple unsuccessful treatments were attempted but the lesions failed to heal.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, SMBT Dental College, Sangamner, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common mucosal condition producing painful ulcerations in the oral cavity and considerable clinical morbidity. The etiology remains obscure, though local trauma, psychologic stress, hematinic deficiencies and immune dysregulation have been implicated. Though the primary goals of therapy are symptomatic relief of pain, the clinicians are aiming toward reducing the frequency, duration, number of ulcerations and increasing ulcer free periods with systemic drug therapy if topical medications appear ineffective.

Background: Mandibular fractures are treated surgically by either rigid or semi-rigid fixation, two techniques that reflect almost opposite concept of craniomaxillofacial osteosynthesis. The shortcomings of these fixations led to the development of 3 dimensional (3D) miniplates. This study was designed with the aim of evaluating the efficiency of 3D miniplate over Champys miniplate in anterior mandibular fractures.

Materials & Methods: Eighty maxillary central incisors were randomly assigned to four groups as follows: Group I (n=20): no bleaching (control); Group II (n=20): bleaching with 38% hydrogen peroxide gel, without the use of an antioxidant; Group III (n=20): bleaching followed by the use of 10% sodium ascorbate; Group IV (n=20) : bleaching followed by the use of 5% proanthocyanidin solution. All the four groups were further subdivided into two groups of ten teeth each depending on the adhesive system used in order to bond the resin composite to enamel surfaces.

  • Local delivery of doxycycline within periodontal treatment shows increased drug concentration and effectiveness compared to systemic methods for managing chronic periodontitis.
  • The study involved 12 patients divided into two groups: one receiving scaling and root planing (SRP) with doxycycline gel, and the other receiving only SRP, with assessments taken at various intervals.
  • Results indicated both groups improved, but the SRP plus gel group showed significantly better outcomes in clinical parameters, suggesting this combination therapy could enhance chronic periodontitis treatment.

Background: The question of whether Indian dentists should advertise their services is an important issue with significant ethical and professional implications. Individual dentists may feel the need to advertise in order to establish or grow a dental practice, but what effect does this have on the standing of the profession as a whole? As health care professionals are bound by a code of ethics, should dentists be allowed to advertise?

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the attitudes of Indian dentists to the issue of advertising. It also aims to explore whether advertising could have positive benefits (to increase the community's awareness of dental health care, encourage better quality dental services, decrease unemployment in the industry, and help consumers choose a dentist), or, on the contrary, whether advertising could have a negative impact by undermining the reputation of the industry, in particular the definition of dentistry as a medical profession.
