Background: Cancer increases the risk of developing TB disease; however, there are limited data on the magnitude of risk by cancer type and timing after diagnosis of cancer in low TB incidence settings.
Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study of persons in Quebec between 1993 and 2017, including people with TB disease and matched controls. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of developing TB among people with cancer overall, by sub-type, and by time from cancer to TB diagnosis.

This study analyzed the spectral response of EBT3, EBT4, and EBT-XD radiochromic films using absorption spectroscopy. The primary focus was on characterizing the evolution of spectral signatures across a range of absorbed doses, thereby elucidating the unique dose-dependent response profiles of each film type. Ten samples of each film type were subjected to open field irradiation within their designated dose ranges (1-20 Gy for EBT3 and EBT4, 1-50 Gy for EBT-XD).

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are emerging as a new therapy for diabetes. Here we investigate the properties of MSCs engineered to express Islet Neogenesis Associated Protein (INGAP) previously shown to reverse diabetes in animal models and evaluate their potential for anti-diabetic applications in mice. Mouse bone marrow-derived MSCs retrovirally transduced to co-express INGAP, Firefly Luciferase and EGFP (INGAP-MSCs), were characterized and implanted intraperitoneally (IP) into non-diabetic and diabetic C57BL/6 mice (Streptozotocin model) and tracked by live bioluminescence imaging (BLI).

This investigation aimed to optimize gradient positioning for radiochromic film calibration to facilitate a uniform distribution of calibration points. The study investigated the influence of various parameters on gradient dose profiles generated by a physical wedge, assessing their impact on the field's dose dynamic range, a scalar quantity representing the span of absorbed doses. Numerical parameterization of the physical wedge profile was used to visualize and quantify the impact of field size, depth, and energy on the dynamic range of dose gradients.

Fracture healing, a critical and complex biological process, often presents challenges in clinical practice with the current standards failing to fully address the medical needs for rapid and effective recovery. In this work, a localized cold therapy is investigated as an alternative approach to expedite bone healing. We hypothesized that optimized cold application can enhance bone healing within a fracture model by inducing hypoxia, leading to accelerated angiogenesis along with improved osteogenesis.

Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty is a successful procedure for treating advanced osteoarthritis (OA). Metal bearing surfaces remain one of the most widely implanted prosthesis, however approximately 10% of patients develop adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs), namely lymphocytic predominant soft tissue reaction with or without necrosis and osteolysis resulting in high revision rates. The mechanism(s) for these reactions remains unclear although T lymphocyte mediated type IV hypersensitivity to cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr) ions have been described.

Androgen deprivation therapies (ADT) are the mainstay treatments for castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). ADT suppresses the androgen receptor (AR) signaling by blocking androgen biosynthesis or inhibiting AR with antiandrogens that target AR's ligand-binding domain (LBD). However, the ADT's effect is short-lived, as the AR signaling inevitably arises again, which is frequently coupled with AR-V7 overexpression.

Lumbar fusion is a risk factor for hip dislocation following total hip arthroplasty (THA). The objective was to compare joint/segment angles during sit-stand-sit in participants that had a THA with and without a lumbar fusion. The secondary objective was to compare pain, physical function, disability, and quality of life.

Background: Inter-segment coordination examines the timing and coupling of multiple body segments and provides a complex understanding of how the neuromuscular system controls the body. Research is required to examine if inter-segment coordination during gait differs between individuals with different knee osteoarthritis (OA) severities and asymptomatic adults.
Research Question: Do inter-segment coordination amplitude and between-trial variability during gait differ between individuals with varying levels of knee OA severity and asymptomatic adults?
Methods: This observational, cross-sectional study included participants with mild/moderate knee OA (n = 38), severe knee OA (n = 24), and asymptomatic adults (n = 51).

Pain is the prime symptom of osteoarthritis (OA) that directly affects the quality of life. Protein kinase Cδ (PKCδ/Prkcd) plays a critical role in OA pathogenesis; however, its significance in OA-related pain is not entirely understood. The present study investigated the functional role of PKCδ in OA pain sensation.

This review offers a critique of recent attempts to reconceptualize some cases of borderline personality disorder (BPD) within the newer diagnosis of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). The CPTSD construct focuses on the role of childhood trauma in shaping relational problems in adulthood, difficulties that have been previously seen as features of a personality disorder. The CPTSD model fails to consider the role of heritable personality traits, as well as a broader range of psychosocial risk factors.

Background: The continued increase in global migration compels clinicians to be aware of specific health problems faced by refugees, immigrants, and migrants (RIM). This analysis aimed to characterize RIM evaluated at GeoSentinel sites, their migration history, and infectious diseases detected through screening and diagnostic workups.
Methods: A case report form was used to collect data on demographics, migration route, infectious diseases screened, test results, and primary infectious disease diagnosis for RIM patients seen at GeoSentinel sites.

Purpose: To compare short-term complications and readmission rates, in patients treated with simultaneous versus staged bilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) within a year from the index procedure.
Methods: We reviewed the charts of patients that underwent simultaneous and staged-within a year-bilateral THA, between 2016 and 2020. Preoperative baseline characteristics were evaluated, while differences in terms of 30-day major and 30-day minor complications and readmission rates were compared between the groups.

Reliable calibration is one of the major challenges in using radiochromic films (RCF) for radiation dosimetry. In this study the feasibility of using dose gradients produced by a physical wedge (PW) for RCF calibration was investigated. The aim was to establish an efficient and reproducible method for calibrating RCF using a PW.

Chronic pain conditions create major financial and emotional burdens that can be devastating for individuals and society. One primary source of pain is arthritis, a common inflammatory disease of the joints that causes persistent pain in affected people. The main objective of pharmacological treatments for either rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or osteoarthritis (OA) is to reduce pain.

The current mainstay therapeutic strategy for advanced prostate cancer is to suppress androgen receptor (AR) signaling. However, castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) invariably arises with restored AR signaling activity. To date, the AR ligand-binding domain (LBD) is the only targeted region for all clinically available AR signaling antagonists, such as enzalutamide (ENZ).

The translation initiation complex 4F (eIF4F) is a rate-limiting factor in protein synthesis. Alterations in eIF4F activity are linked to several diseases, including cancer and infectious diseases. To this end, coronaviruses require eIF4F complex activity to produce proteins essential for their life cycle.

Canada has a low incidence of TB, although certain groups are disproportionately affected. To describe and compare the epidemiology, trends and characteristics of TB in Quebec, Canada, among all patients reported during 1993-2018. Demographics and risk factors were compared for the three groups accounting for most TB diagnoses reported in Quebec (foreign-born, Canadian-born non-Indigenous and Inuit).
