Risk of TB disease in individuals with cancer.

IJTLD Open

January 2025

Centre for Clinical Epidemiology, Lady Davis Institute, Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, QC, Canada.

Background: Cancer increases the risk of developing TB disease; however, there are limited data on the magnitude of risk by cancer type and timing after diagnosis of cancer in low TB incidence settings.

Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study of persons in Quebec between 1993 and 2017, including people with TB disease and matched controls. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of developing TB among people with cancer overall, by sub-type, and by time from cancer to TB diagnosis.

This study analyzed the spectral response of EBT3, EBT4, and EBT-XD radiochromic films using absorption spectroscopy. The primary focus was on characterizing the evolution of spectral signatures across a range of absorbed doses, thereby elucidating the unique dose-dependent response profiles of each film type. Ten samples of each film type were subjected to open field irradiation within their designated dose ranges (1-20 Gy for EBT3 and EBT4, 1-50 Gy for EBT-XD).

Article Synopsis
  • Intervertebral disc degeneration and pain are linked to the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and the processing of IL-1β, which involves Toll-like receptor stimulation and the CD14 receptor.
  • The peptide Short Link N (sLN) has shown promise in reducing inflammation and pain in disc cells, but its exact mechanisms of action are not fully understood.
  • This study found that sLN inhibited the activation of NFκB and Caspase-1, leading to lower levels of IL-1β, and demonstrated a direct interaction between sLN and CD14, suggesting sLN could be a potential treatment for disc-related pain.

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are emerging as a new therapy for diabetes. Here we investigate the properties of MSCs engineered to express Islet Neogenesis Associated Protein (INGAP) previously shown to reverse diabetes in animal models and evaluate their potential for anti-diabetic applications in mice. Mouse bone marrow-derived MSCs retrovirally transduced to co-express INGAP, Firefly Luciferase and EGFP (INGAP-MSCs), were characterized and implanted intraperitoneally (IP) into non-diabetic and diabetic C57BL/6 mice (Streptozotocin model) and tracked by live bioluminescence imaging (BLI).

This investigation aimed to optimize gradient positioning for radiochromic film calibration to facilitate a uniform distribution of calibration points. The study investigated the influence of various parameters on gradient dose profiles generated by a physical wedge, assessing their impact on the field's dose dynamic range, a scalar quantity representing the span of absorbed doses. Numerical parameterization of the physical wedge profile was used to visualize and quantify the impact of field size, depth, and energy on the dynamic range of dose gradients.

Enhancing Bone Healing Through Localized Cold Therapy in a Murine Femoral Fracture Model.

Tissue Eng Part A

August 2024

Department of Chemical Engineering, Polytechnique Montreal, Montreal, Canada.

Fracture healing, a critical and complex biological process, often presents challenges in clinical practice with the current standards failing to fully address the medical needs for rapid and effective recovery. In this work, a localized cold therapy is investigated as an alternative approach to expedite bone healing. We hypothesized that optimized cold application can enhance bone healing within a fracture model by inducing hypoxia, leading to accelerated angiogenesis along with improved osteogenesis.

Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty is a successful procedure for treating advanced osteoarthritis (OA). Metal bearing surfaces remain one of the most widely implanted prosthesis, however approximately 10% of patients develop adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs), namely lymphocytic predominant soft tissue reaction with or without necrosis and osteolysis resulting in high revision rates. The mechanism(s) for these reactions remains unclear although T lymphocyte mediated type IV hypersensitivity to cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr) ions have been described.

SC912 inhibits AR-V7 activity in castration-resistant prostate cancer by targeting the androgen receptor N-terminal domain.

Oncogene

May 2024

Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, SMBD-Jewish General Hospital, McGill University, 3755 Cote-Ste-Catherine, Rd, Montreal, QC, H3T 1E2, Canada.

Androgen deprivation therapies (ADT) are the mainstay treatments for castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). ADT suppresses the androgen receptor (AR) signaling by blocking androgen biosynthesis or inhibiting AR with antiandrogens that target AR's ligand-binding domain (LBD). However, the ADT's effect is short-lived, as the AR signaling inevitably arises again, which is frequently coupled with AR-V7 overexpression.

Background: Inter-segment coordination examines the timing and coupling of multiple body segments and provides a complex understanding of how the neuromuscular system controls the body. Research is required to examine if inter-segment coordination during gait differs between individuals with different knee osteoarthritis (OA) severities and asymptomatic adults.

Research Question: Do inter-segment coordination amplitude and between-trial variability during gait differ between individuals with varying levels of knee OA severity and asymptomatic adults?

Methods: This observational, cross-sectional study included participants with mild/moderate knee OA (n = 38), severe knee OA (n = 24), and asymptomatic adults (n = 51).

Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and a Biopsychosocial Model of Borderline Personality Disorder.

J Nerv Ment Dis

November 2023

SMBD-Jewish General Hospital, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

This review offers a critique of recent attempts to reconceptualize some cases of borderline personality disorder (BPD) within the newer diagnosis of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). The CPTSD construct focuses on the role of childhood trauma in shaping relational problems in adulthood, difficulties that have been previously seen as features of a personality disorder. The CPTSD model fails to consider the role of heritable personality traits, as well as a broader range of psychosocial risk factors.
