Stigma and discrimination among persons with mental illness in a tertiary care medical institution in Southern India.

The proportional contribution of mental disorders to the total disease burden in India has almost doubled since 1990. Stigma and discrimination are major barriers to seeking treatment for persons with mental illness (PMI). Stigma reduction strategies are thus crucial, and for this, there needs to be an understanding of the various factors associated with them.

Role of Bronchoscopic Cytology in Diagnosis of Pulmonary Lesions.

Objectives: Respiratory cytology specimens such as bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and bronchial wash (BW) obtained using a fiberoptic bronchoscope are very useful in detecting or ruling out various inflammatory conditions, infections, and neoplastic lesions. A study was carried out to determine the usefulness of respiratory cytology in the diagnosis of pulmonary lesions and the limitations of cytology if any, and correlate the results of cytology with biopsies wherever possible.

Methods: All bronchoscopic cytology and biopsy specimens received at the pathology laboratory of this tertiary care institute between June 2014 and May 2017 were analyzed.

Since the emergency department (ED) is the primary contact of these patients in health care, doctors in the ED should be trained to perform advanced airway management. In India, emergency medicine has been recognized as a new specialty by the Medical Council of India (now the National Medical Commission) since 2009.

Probiotic potential of β‑galactosidase‑producing lactic acid bacteria from fermented milk and their molecular characterization.

Probiotics have attained significant interest in recent years as a result of their gut microbiome modulation and gastrointestinal health benefits. Numerous fermented foods contain lactic acid bacteria (LAB) which are considered as GRAS and probiotic bacteria. The present study aimed to investigate indigenous LAB from homemade fermented milk samples collected in remote areas of Karnataka (India), in order to isolate the most potent and well-adapted to local environmental conditions bacteria, which were then evaluated using a step-by-step approach focused on the evaluation of probiotic traits and β-galactosidase-producing ability.

Does Pectoralis Major Myocutaneous Flap Cause the Shoulder Morbidity: A Clinical Comparative Study.

The aim was to compare the morbidity of shoulder function following modified radical neck dissection with and without Pectoralis Major Myocutaneous muscle flap (PMMC) harvest in head and neck cancer patient to determine the effect of PMMC flap harvest on shoulder function and also to determine the effect of physiotherapy. Materials and methods: Prospective study involving two groups study group of 20 patients with MRND, with PMMC flap reconstruction as part of head and neck cancer surgery and control group of 20 patients who had undergone MRND(IJV & SAN sparing) without PMMC flap in same period were included. All patients were assessed at 3rd and 6th month following completion of surgery using subjective (Shoulder Disability Questionnaire) and objective (goniometer and manual muscle testing) parameters.

Effectiveness of structured physiotherapy in constipation in children with neurodevelopmental disorders-a randomized trial.

Introduction: Constipation is one of the major issues faced by children with neuro-developmental disorder (NDD). The aims of the study were to: 1) examine the effectiveness of a structured physiotherapy program on constipation in children with NDD; and 2) compare if conventional physiotherapy along with structured physiotherapy intervention has any combined effect on constipation in children with NDD.

This multicentric study was conducted by the Nephrology Association of Karnataka to systematically study patient demographics and dialysis characteristics in Karnataka state, India, as a basis for a statewide dialysis registry.

Grossly Depressed Frontal Bone Fracture in a Paediatric Patient: A Case Report.

This study highlights the management of a grossly depressed frontal bone fracture with obvious deformity in a paediatric patient as facial fracture management is frequently intricate and challenging, particularly within the paediatric population as compared to adult. Paediatric fractures have a greater capacity to remodel, but the paediatric brain and craniofacial skeleton are still developing which puts the children at risk for unique complications, such as growing skull fractures.

A Rare Case of Pseudoaneurysm of the Brachial Artery in Supracondylar Humerus Fracture.

Introduction: Supracondylar humerus fractures are very common fractures in children. About 10-14% are associated with vascular complications. We report a rare case of pseudoaneurysm of the brachial artery which was promptly detected in a well-perfused hand nearly 2 weeks after reduction and fixation.

Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor in the Maxillofacial Region: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome and is associated with the presence of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) which results in renal phosphate wasting with hypophosphatemia. In total, 95% of cases reported in upper and lower extremities and in head and neck are a rare site for these tumors. Besides osteomalacia, the clinical presentation includes bone pain and multiple bone fractures.
