Background & Objective: Diabetic patients often develop lesions called non-diabetic renal diseases (NDRD), whose prognostic and therapeutic implications vary from diabetic nephropathy (DN). Since early identification of NDRD is associated with a better prognosis, we aimed to understand its spectrum.

Methods: One hundred and thirty-four patients were included in a cross-sectional study.

Article Synopsis
  • Exercise training is increasingly recognized as a valuable addition to medical treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), but the metabolic changes it induces are not well understood.
  • The study involved male Wistar rats, which were divided into four groups, with some undergoing treadmill exercise for five weeks to analyze metabolic effects.
  • Results indicated significant alterations in lipid and amino acid metabolism due to PAH, but exercise helped restore normal levels of arginine and homocysteine, potentially improving PAH outcomes.

Introduction: The volumes of colostrum have been quantified as 5 mL and 25 mL per feed on days 1 and 3, respectively, as per the data described about 20 years ago. However, the use of commercial formula is on the rise and 'not enough milk' is a common complaint by postnatal mothers.

Objectives: To determine the average volume of colostrum in one sitting per day on first three postnatal days among healthy late preterm and term gestational mothers and to compare the same among late preterm, term gestation and modes of delivery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to estimate blood loss and blood transfusion rates following major surgeries, including neck dissections and reconstructions, while exploring blood conservation strategies.
  • Data was collected from 38 patients, primarily males with oral squamous cell carcinoma, from 2017-2019, showing an average blood loss of 673.5 ml and a significant correlation between surgery duration and blood loss.
  • The findings suggest that successful blood conservation methods led to avoiding transfusions in 76.3% of patients, though there's no standardized method for accurately measuring blood loss.

An adolescent girl presented with recurrent lower limb fractures and was managed as osteogenesis imperfecta. Low phosphate levels noted on routine investigation were the clue for the phosphaturia and subsequent diagnosis of proximal renal tubular acidosis (RTA). Further, with a history of jaundice, she was diagnosed with Wilson's disease, which was the underlying cause of proximal RTA with isolated phosphaturia and consequent fractures.

: metabolic allies and adversaries in the world of polymicrobial infections.

Crit Rev Microbiol

September 2024

Department of Public Health Genomics, Manipal School of Life Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, India.

(PA), an opportunistic human pathogen that is frequently linked with chronic infections in immunocompromised individuals, is also metabolically versatile, and thrives in diverse environments. Additionally, studies report that PA can interact with other microorganisms, such as bacteria, and fungi, producing unique metabolites that can modulate the host immune response, and contribute to disease pathogenesis. This review summarizes the current knowledge related to the metabolic interactions of PA with other microorganisms (, , , , and ) and human hosts, and the importance of these interactions in a polymicrobial context.

Progressive myoclonus epilepsy (PME) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by recurrent seizures and progressive myoclonus. To date, based on the phenotypes and causal genes, more than 40 subtypes of PMEs have been identified, and more remain to be characterized. Our study is aimed at identifying the aberrant gene(s) possibly associated with PMEs in two siblings born to asymptomatic parents, in the absence of known genetic mutations.

Funct Integr Genomics

August 2024

Department of Bioinformatics, Manipal School of Life Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, 576104, India.

Clustered miRNAs consist of two or more miRNAs transcribed together and may coordinately regulate gene expression. Differential expression of clustered miRNAs is found to be controlled by crosstalk of genetic or epigenetic mechanisms. It has been demonstrated that clustered miRNA expression patterns greatly impact cancer cell progression.

Deep learning architectures like ResNet and Inception have produced accurate predictions for classifying benign and malignant tumors in the healthcare domain. This enables healthcare institutions to make data-driven decisions and potentially enable early detection of malignancy by employing computer-vision-based deep learning algorithms. These CNN algorithms, in addition to requiring huge amounts of data, can identify higher- and lower-level features that are significant while classifying tumors into benign or malignant.
