Unidade de Xenética, Instituto de Ciencias Forenses, Facultade de Medicina, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, 15782, Calle San Francisco sn, Galicia, Spain.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes atypical pneumonia in children and young adults. Its lack of a cell wall makes it resistant to beta-lactams, which are the first-line treatment for typical pneumonia. Current diagnostic tests are time-consuming and have low specificity, leading clinicians to administer empirical antibiotics.

Background: The majority of functional ischemia tests in patients with suspected chronic coronary syndromes (CCS) yield normal results. Implementing gatekeepers for patient preselection, such as pretest probability (PTP) and/or coronary artery calcium score (CACS), could reduce the number of normal scan results, radiation exposure and costs. However, the efficacy and safety of these approaches remain unclear.

Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) is an effective intervention for high-risk patients with severe symptomatic mitral regurgitation (MR); however, its acute impact on left ventricular (LV) function has not been well-studied using advanced echocardiographic techniques. This study investigated the immediate effects of TEER on LV volumes and functions and their influence on midterm outcomes, using high-resolution 3-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography. In 80 patients who underwent TEER for severe MR (mean age 79 ± 8 years, 49% with primary MR), LV end-diastolic volume and stroke volume significantly decreased (161 ± 61 to 147 ± 54 ml and 69 ± 18 to 50 ± 15 ml, respectively), whereas end-systolic volume increased (92 ± 60 to 97 ± 45 ml, p <0.

Staging of prostate Cancer with ultra-fast PSMA-PET scans enhanced by AI.

Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging

January 2025

Department of Nuclear Medicine and German Cancer Consortium (DKTK), University Hospital Essen, University of Duisburg-Essen, Hufelandstraße 55, Essen, 45147, Germany.

Purpose: PSMA-PET is a reference standard examination for patients with prostate cancer, but even using recently introduced digital PET detectors image acquisition with standard field-of-view scanners is still in the range of 20 min. This may cause limited access to examination slots because of the growing demand for PSMA-PET. Ultra-fast PSMA-PET may enhance throughput but comes at the cost of poor image quality.

Scapular morphological attributes show promise as prognostic indicators of retear following rotator cuff repair. Current evaluation techniques using single-slice magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI) are, however, prone to error, while more accurate computed tomography (CT)-based three-dimensional techniques, are limited by cost and radiation exposure. In this study we propose deep learning-based methods that enable automatic scapular morphological analysis from diagnostic MRI despite the anisotropic resolution and reduced field of view, compared to CT.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing aerosol-generating procedures became fundamental, particularly in ophthalmic surgeries traditionally performed under general anesthesia (GA). Regional anesthesia, such as sub-Tenon's block (STB), is widely used in vitreoretinal surgeries, offering a safer alternative by avoiding airway manipulation. However, the altered orbital anatomy in patients with previous scleral explant surgery creates unique challenges to STB application.
