Activity levels of acid and alkaline phosphatases in hepatopancreas, stomach, muscle, gill and brain tissues of penaeid prawn, Metapenaeus monoceros were studied after in vitro addition of different concentrations of aldrin and lindane, the organochlorine insecticides. The activity levels of both these enzymes were inhibited significantly in all the tissues of prawn and the degree of inhibition is increased with increase in the concentration of insecticide. The significant inhibition creates disturbances in the normal functioning such as disturbances in the normal functioning such as disturbances in protein synthesis and different biochemical lesions in selected tissues of prawn, M.

Levels of various protein fractions, (sarcoplasmic, myosin, actin, non-collagen and collagen) and the rate of their degradation by proteases were studied in phasic and tonic muscles of marine prawn, Penaeus indicus following acute (2 d) and chronic (15 d) exposure to sublethal concentration of phosphamidon. During exposure, greater decrease in sarcoplasmic protein fraction was observed in phasic muscle as compared to other myofibrillar proteins. But the sarcoplasmic protein content showed an elevation in tonic muscle.

The acetylcholinesterase activity in selected tissues of prawn, Metapenaeus monoceros showed a significant inhibition during commercial (CgC) and technical (TgC) grade carbaryl exposure. The rate of inhibition of AChE in nervous and non-nervous tissues is more under CgC over TgC exposure, suggests the involvement of emulsifier system for easy penetration of CgC molecule, which is absent in TgC. A progressive recovery of AChE activity from TgC and CgC induced inhibition was in the tissues within 10 days after the transfer of prawns to toxicant free water i.

Selected kinesiological parameters were studied in the gastrocnemius muscle of frog, R. hexadactyla Lesson, under different treatments with malathion and atropine. There is an apparent decrease of twitch amplitude, half contraction time, half relaxation time, twitch duration and fatigue time in control muscle during malathion treatment.

The levels of proteins, glucose and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity were studied in muscle, gill and liver tissues of the fish Tilapia mossambica under sublethal methyl parathion toxicity. Tissue glucose levels decreased with increased soluble protein content and the activity levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were elevated considerably. These results are discussed in relation to the involvement of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in both synthetic and detoxification processes as an adaptive response against methyl parathion toxicity.
