Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and cystatin C represent early renal injury markers for contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). Baseline parameters such as type and quantity of contrast, patient preparation, renal function status, and diabetes mellitus (DM) are known to affect the response of the kidney to contrast-induced injury. This study was taken up to know the biomarker response to contrast administration in 58 diabetic and 59 nondiabetic male patients with same baseline parameters and baseline serum creatinine <1.

Oxidative stress is likely to be involved in the development of complications due to haemodialysis. Though there is evidence for production of oxygen free radicals during haemodialysis, reports on net oxidative imbalance due to a single dialysis session are conflicting. Hence, a time-course analysis of changes in lipid peroxides (LPO) along with antioxidant enzymes and vitamins was carried out.

Chronic renal failure, characterised by two factors acting in opposite directions with respect to the serum thyroid homone levels was chosen for the study. Healthy controls, donors undergoing nephrectomy and renal transplant recipients were studied. In transplant recipients, presurgical levels of total thyroxine(TT4), free triiodothyronine(FT3) and free thyroxine(FT4) were lower than controls, and immediately after the release of arterial clamps, there was an upsurge of total triiodothyronine (TT3), TT4, FT3 and FT4 due to administered and/or endogeneously secreted catecholamines.

To evaluate the efficacy of a semirigid mini-endoscope and the Swiss Lithoclast compared with a conventional rigid endoscope and ultrasound, the results of transurethral ureteroscopic lithotripsy in 147 patients over a period of 30 months were analyzed according to the type of ureteroscope (rigid v semirigid) and energy (ultrasound v Lithoclast) used. In the initial 25 cases (Group I), a conventional rigid ureteroscope and ultrasound were used. The latter 122 patients (Group II) were subjected to ureteroscopic lithotripsy using a miniscope and the Lithoclast.
