J Anesth Analg Crit Care

November 2023

IRCCS Istituto delle Scienze Neurologiche di Bologna, Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit, Bologna, Italy.

Cerebral ventriculitis is a life-threatening condition that requires prompt and effective pharmacological intervention. The continuous irrigation of the cerebral ventricles with fluid and its drainage is a system to remove toxic substances and infectious residues in the ventricles; this system is called IRRAflow®. We used this kind of ventricular irrigation/drainage system to treat two patients with post-surgical cerebral ventriculitis and a patient with bacterial meningitis complicated with ventriculitis.

Background: The patient selection for optimal adjuvant therapy in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) is provided by nomogram based on tumor size, mitotic index, tumor location, and tumor rupture. Although mutational status is not currently used to risk assessment, tumor genotype showed a prognostic influence on natural history and tumor relapse. Innovative measures, such as KIT/PDGFRA-mutant-specific variant allele frequency (VAF) levels detection from next-generation sequencing (NGS), may act as a surrogate of tumor burden and correlate with prognosis and overall survival of patients with GIST, helping the choice for adjuvant treatment.

Radiology-based diagnosis of fungal pulmonary infections in high-risk hematology patients: are we making progress?

Curr Opin Infect Dis

August 2023

Pediatric and Adult CardioThoracic and Vascular, Oncohematologic and Emergency Radiology Unit, DIMEC-Dipartimento di Scienze Mediche e Chirurgiche, University of Bologna, IRCCS S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, Bologna, Italy.

Purpose Of Review: In patients with hematological malignancies, high-resolution computed tomography (CT) is the recommended imaging approach for diagnosis, staging and monitoring of invasive fungal disease (IFD) but lacks specificity. We examined the status of current imaging modalities for IFD and possibilities for more effective applications of current technology for improving the specificity of IFD diagnosis.

Recent Findings: Although CT imaging recommendations for IFD are largely unchanged in the last 20 years, improvements in CT scanner technology and image processing algorithms now allow for technically adequate examinations at much lower radiation doses.
