The pattern of lipid profiles and organic constituents of cardiac and serum tissues of rabbits were studied on treatment with cholesterol, zinc and zinc + cholesterol. Total carbohydrate and total protein levels were decreased with elevated lipid levels in cholesterol fed rabbits. However, the zinc and cholesterol + zinc fed rabbits showed decreased lipid fractions in cardiac and serum tissues leading to reduced atherosclerotic process in rabbits.

Occupational malaria and health risk among select occupational health care employee groups in an urban hospital at Tirupati, A.P.

Indian J Malariol

February 2002

Division of Environmental Biology, Department of Zoology, S.V. University, Tirupati-517 502, India.

Epidemiological studies on occupational environments are very meagre in the developing countries like India. For this reason an attempt was made in the present investigation to see the occupational risk of malaria among health care workers of Sri Venkateswara Ramnarayan Ruia Government General Hospital (SVRRGGH), Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The cohort studies revealed association between exposure to occupational (hospital) environment and malaria among hospital staff.

Single crystal electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies were carried at room temperature for VO(II) doped zinc potassium phosphate hexahydrate. The results indicate that the paramagnetic impurity has entered the lattice only substitutionally, as confirmed by the single crystal rotations. The spin Hamiltonian parameters calculated from the spectra are g parallel = 1.

Department of Biochemistry, S.V. University, 517502, A.P., Tirupathi, India.

Aqueous, ethanolic and hexane fractions of Momordica cymbalaria fruits were prepared and given individually at different doses to different batches of rats (both normal and alloxan diabetic rats) after an overnight fast. The blood glucose levels were measured at 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 h after the treatment. The aqueous extract of Momordica cymbalaria at a dosage of 0.

The possible involvement of opioid system in the regulation of hemolymph glucose level in the fresh water crab Oziotelphusa senex senex Fabricius, was investigated. Opioid agonist and antagonist was also used in addition to methionine-enkephalin itself. Injection of the opioid, methionine-enkephalin and FK 33-824 significantly elevated hemolymph glucose level.

Thevetia peruviana seed carboxyl esterase was employed as a biosensor for the detection of selenium compounds by an enzyme inhibition technique on paper chromatograms. The selenium compounds (sodium selenite and selenium dioxide) appeared as white spots on a magenta background due to the inhibition of Thevetia peruviana seed carboxyl esterase (substrate 1-naphthyl acetate, coupling reagent Fast blue B salt). The minimum detectable amounts were about 5 microg of sodium selenite and 5 microg of selenium dioxide.

Depolarizing neuromuscular junctional blocking action of Parthenium hysterophorus leaf extracts in rat.

Phytother Res

August 1999

Division of Environmental Biology, Department of Zoology, S. V. University, Tirupati - 517 502. A.P. India.

Electromyographic (EMG) and electrodiagnostic studies were made on sciatic nerve-anterior tibialis muscle in vivo in rats administered with a sublethal dose of Parthenium hysterophorus dry leaf powder 100 mg/100 g body weight of rat. Nerve-evoked and muscle-evoked compound muscle action potentials were recorded at different frequencies of stimulations and at different time intervals. The EMG studies revealed depolarizing neuromuscular junctional (NMJ) blocking effects of the leaf extract.

Chick embryos were treated with different concentrations (25 and 75 mumoles/kg egg wt.) of zinc on the 14th day of embryonic development. The levels of thiobarbuturic acid reacting substances (TBARS), glutathione (GSH) and activity levels of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase were measured in both hepatic and brain tissues after different time intervals (24 h, 72 h and 120 h) of zinc exposure.

Stress dimensions among caregivers of the elderly.

Indian J Med Res

October 1997

Department of Psychology, S.V. University, Tirupati.

Urbanisation, nuclearisation of family, migration and dual career families are making elder care more and more of a personal and social problem in India. Increasing life span and poor health care add to the degree of disability among the elderly and compound the problems of caregiving. The caregiver, who is usually a spouse or the daughter-in-law in an Indian family find it increasingly stressful to meet the care needs of disabled and frail elderly in the family.

Glutathione metabolism in uremic rat.

Drug Chem Toxicol

August 1997

Department of Zoology, S. V. University, Tirupati, India.

The impact of guanidine hydrochloride, a uremic toxin, has been investigated on glutathione mediated antioxidant defense mechanisms in rat liver and kidney. Elevated glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity in the tissue of guanidine treated rat indicates its active participation in the detoxification of uremic toxin involving glutathione. Glutathione (GSH) is replenished by elevated glutathione reductase and peroxides formed are subsequently detoxified by augumented selenium and non-selenium dependent glutathione peroxidase activities.

Cyclosporin-A, a potent immunosuppressive agent is known to induce cellular toxic side effects by way of altering calcium homeostasis, including calcium/calmodulin mediated events. We studied the in vitro and in vivo effects of cyclosporin-A on rat brain nitric oxide synthase activity (the enzyme that mediates the conversion of L-arginine to citrulline and NO). CsA in concentrations of 22-4400 nM inhibited rat brain NOS activity in vitro and in 10 or 25 mg/kg wt/4 weeks of CsA treated rat brains in vivo.

The toxicity of acetaldehyde and age related changes on oxidoreductases in the liver, brain, kidney, and muscle of female albino rats (Wistar strain) were studied. The specific activities of lactate [LDH], isocitrate [ICDH (NAD/NADP)], succinate [SDH], malate [MDH], glutamate [GDH] and glucose-6-Phosphate [G-6-PDH] dehydrogenases were significantly increased as a function of age. However, acetaldehyde treatment significantly inhibited oxidoreductases in the tissue of 21, 90 and 180 day old rats.

Induced-acetaldehyde toxic effects on gluatathione [GSH] metabolism and sulfhydryl (SH) groups in liver and in brain of female albino rats with reference to age was studied. The total -SH groups were decreased whereas the specific activities of glutathione-S-transferase [GST] and glutathione peroxidase [GPo] were increased in acetaldehyde treated rats. However, the specific activity levels of glutathione reductase [GR] and gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase [gamma-GCS] were decreased.

Serum lipid peroxides and lipids in urban and rural Indian men.

Arch Environ Health

May 1994

Department of Physical Anthropology, S.V. University, Tirupati, India.

Serum lipid peroxides, lipids, blood pressure, body mass index, and dietary intake in 190 urban men were compared with 190 age-matched rural men. Significantly higher levels of lipid peroxides, serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were seen in urban men, compared with rural men. In rural men, serum lipid peroxides were related negatively to age; the same was observed in the 70 + y age group in the urban population.
