A rapid, sensitive and selective method is described for the determination of chromium(VI) in presence of 100-fold amounts of chromium(III) by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) in conjunction with coprecipitative preconcentration of its ethyl xanthate complex onto naphthalene. The solid mixture consisting of the chromium(VI) complex together with naphthalene is dissolved in 8.0ml of dimethyl formamide (DMF) and chromium(VI) content was established by FAAS.

4-Amino-5-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (1) underwent facile condensation with various phosphorus dichlorides (2a-j) in the presence of triethylamine in dry tetrahydrofuran at 60-65 degrees C and afforded corresponding thiadiazaphosphol-2-ones (3a-j). Their chemical structures were characterized using IR, (1)H-, (13)C-, (31)P-NMR and Mass spectral studies. All the title compounds were screened for antioxidant properties by radical scavenging methods such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl and lipid peroxidation.

Objective: To assess the effects of supplementation with oral iron(III) hydroxide polymaltose complex on the iron status of adolescents with and without iron deficiency and anemia.
Method: Adolescents of both sexes with varying iron status were allocated to four treatment groups by using inclusion criteria. Three of the four groups received iron(III) hydroxide polymaltose complex (IPC, Maltofer) containing 100 mg of iron 6 days a week for 8 months.

Use of Juvenile Hormone Analogues (JHA) in sericulture practices has been shown to boost good cocoon yield; their effect has been determined to be dose-dependent. We studied the impact of low doses of JHA compounds such as methoprene and fenoxycarb on selected key enzymatic activities of the silkworm Bombyx mori. Methoprene and fenoxycarb at doses of 1.

Nucleic acid preparations extracted using four procedures were assessed to determine the suitability of the procedure for PCR-based and DNA dot-blot-based detection of Citrus yellow mosaic badna virus (CMBV) from two citrus species, acid lime and pummelo. It was found that the success of PCR detection depended upon the procedure of DNA extraction whereas the dot-blot detection was successful with all extraction methods examined. CMBV DNA sequences amplified from two citrus species indicated high nucleotide sequence identity to the sequences reported previously from sweet orange.

Glutathione plays a central role in the maintenance of cellular antioxidant defense. The alterations in the glutathione and associated recyclic enzymes caused by both exercise training and ethanol are well documented; however, their interactive effects with age are not well understood. Therefore, the influence of ageing and the interactive effects of exercise training and ethanol on the myocardial glutathione system in 3 months and 18 months old rats were examined.

Synthesis of some new substituted [3-(3-chloro-4-fluorophenyl)-2-oxo-3,4-dihydro-2H-2lambda(5)-benzo[e][1,3,2]oxazaphosphinin-2-yl]-(aryl/alkyl)methanols (7a-k) based on the Pudovick reaction was accomplished in the presence of niobium pentoxide (Nb(2)O(5)) without using an external chiral ligand. Nb(2)O(5) appears to form the metal complex intermediate catalyst system (6) by reacting with 3-(3-chloro-4-fluoro-phenyl)-3,4-dihydrobenzo[e][1,3,2]oxazaphosphinine-2-oxide (4), which not only directs the Pudovick addition reactions of aldehyde but also increases the yields and purity of the products. These compounds exhibited a lethal effect on whip smut of sugarcane and were degraded in the environment in the presence of bacteria and fungi to nontoxic phosphate residues that act as possible plant nutrients.

bis-[2-Hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde] thiourea was synthesized and preconcentration cloud point extraction (CPE) for speciation determination of chromium(III) and (VI) in various environmental samples with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) has been developed. Chromium(III) complexes with bis-[2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde] thiourea is subsequently entrapped in the surfactant micelles. After complexation of chromium(III) with reagent, the analyte was quantitatively extracted to the surfactant-rich phase in the non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 after centrifugation.
