Currently, there are a few detailed guidelines on the overall management of children and adolescents with moderate-severe atopic dermatitis. AD is a complex disease presenting with different clinical phenotypes, which require an individualized and multidisciplinary approach. Therefore, appropriate interaction between primary care pediatricians, pediatric allergists, and pediatric dermatologists is crucial to finding the best management strategy.

Recent evidence showed that the postulated linear progression of the atopic march, from atopic dermatitis to food and respiratory allergies, does not capture the heterogeneity of allergic phenotypes, which are influenced by complex interactions between environmental, genetic, and psychosocial factors. Indeed, multiple atopic trajectories are possible in addition to the classic atopic march. Nevertheless, atopic dermatitis is often the first manifestation of an atopic march.

The aim of the multicentre study promoted by Nuova FIO is to evaluate the beneficial effects of the systemic Oxygen-Ozone (O2O3) therapy in patients suffering from SARS COV-2 disease in the early phases of the disease, before worsening, up to the need of tracheal intubation. The study is based on the rationale on that the systemic oxygen-ozone treatment could be effective, positively influencing the disease evolution and/or being able to mitigate the onset of the cytokine storm syndrome at least partially.

While the world is facing an unprecedented pandemic with COVID-19, patients with chronic diseases need special attention and if warranted adaptation of their regular treatment plan. In children, allergy and asthma are among the most prevalent non-communicable chronic diseases, and healthcare providers taking care of these patients need guidance. At the current stage of knowledge, children have less severe symptoms of COVID-19, and severe asthma and immunodeficiency are classified as risk factors.

Background: A part of damage-control laparotomy is to leave the fascial edges and the skin open to avoid abdominal compartment syndrome and allow further explorations. This condition, known as open abdomen (OA), although effective, is associated with severe complications. Our aim was to develop evidence-based recommendations to define indications for OA, techniques for temporary abdominal closure, management of enteric fistulas, and methods of definitive wall closure.

Article Synopsis
  • Tumor-initiating cells are a special kind of cell in tumors that act like normal stem cells and are often the reason treatments don’t work well.
  • Scientists found that removing a protein called Lamin A/C from neuroblastoma (a type of cancer) cells makes them more aggressive and helps them look and act more like stem cells.
  • In the study, they showed that when Lamin A/C is knocked down, the cancer cells change and grow more tumor-initiating cells, which is linked to a gene called MYCN that helps these cells survive.

Atopic dermatitis and asthma.

Allergy Asthma Proc

January 2008

Research Center, AFaR, S. Pietro Hospital, Fatebenefratelli, Roma, Italy.

Atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic inflammatory skin disease, frequently associated with respiratory allergy, is one of the most common skin disorders observed in children. The prevalence of AD and other allergic diseases is increasing in industrialized countries, representing a major burden on health care cost. AD has been proposed as an "entry point" for subsequent allergic diseases, suggesting the possibility that effective management of AD could prevent the development of respiratory allergy or at least reduce the severity of asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is usually managed with systemic treatments such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and/or symptomatic slow-acting drugs. Unfortunately, many patients either cannot tolerate NSAIDs or suffer serious, even fatal, NSAID-induced side effects, predominantly gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding. Viscosupplementation, which aims to restore physiological and rheological features of the synovial fluid, is a well-accepted therapeutic option in knee OA patients, but limited data exist in the literature about its potential benefit for the treatment of hip OA.

Recently, the finding of high plasma concentration of phyto-oestrogens in soy protein formula (SPF) fed children has focused scientific attention on the phyto-oestrogens (isoflavones genistein, daidzein, and their glycosides) contained in SPFs. The aim of this study was to evaluate some hormonal and metabolic effects of long-term (more than 6 months) SPF feeding. We enrolled 48 children, mean age 37 months (range 7-96 months), 27 males and 21 females.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a genetically determinated, chronic inflammatory skin disorder associated with cutaneous erythema and severe pruritus, affecting 10-15% of children with increasing incidence and socio-economical relevance. Frequently, AD is associated with development of allergic rhinitis and/or asthma later in childhood. In most of patients AD is associated with a sensitization to food and/or environmental allergens and increased serum-IgE, while only a fewer percentage missed links to the classical atopic diathesis.
