The association between gastro-oesophageal reflux and migraine in the paediatric population: a multicentre case-control study.

Eur J Pediatr

April 2022

Department of Paediatric Emergency Care, DM'UP, APHP, Hôpital Robert Debré, 48 Boulevard Serrurier, Paris, 75019, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Infantile regurgitation is a common issue in infants and has been examined for its connection to primary headaches in children through a study involving 195 children aged 6-17 years with headaches and 240 controls.
  • The study found a significant link between a history of infantile regurgitation and migraine, especially in cases of migraine without aura, while no such link was found for tension-type headaches.
  • The authors suggest that further research is needed to determine if infantile regurgitation could serve as an early indicator for migraine development in children.

Psychological Traumas and Cardiovascular Disease: A Case-Control Study.

Healthcare (Basel)

July 2021

Department of Clinical Sciences and Community Health, University of Milan, 20122 Milan, Italy.

Adverse childhood experiences could be important determinants of adult disease. The present study analyzed the association between early traumatic experiences and the onset of cardiovascular disease (CVDs). It was hypothesized that patients with CVD would report a higher number of traumatic experiences during childhood and that this association would be stronger in women.

Objectives: Comparisons between rilpivirine (RPV) and integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) in antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve HIV-infected individuals are currently lacking. This study aimed to compare, in an observational cohort setting, the durability of treatment with RPV-based and INSTI-based first-line regimens.

Methods: Patients who started first-line ARTs based on RPV or INSTIs, with HIV-RNA < 100 000 copies/mL and CD4 cell count > 200 cells/μL were included.

: The novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and related syndrome (COVID-19) has led to worldwide measures with severe consequences for millions of people. In the light of the psychopathological consequences of restrictive measures detected during previous outbreaks, a systematic review was carried out to provide an evidence-based assessment of possible effects of the current COVID-19 quarantine on mental health. : This review included studies that assessed mental health indexes (e.

Background: The new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) shows several similarities with previous outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). Aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to provide evidence of the psychopathologic burden on health care workers (HCWs) of the first two deadly coronavirus outbreaks to get lessons for managing the current burden of COVID-19 outbreak.

Method: According to Cochrane Collaboration guidelines and the PRISMA Statement, the study quantified the effects of frontline work on mental health of HCWs.

Background: In hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia, progression to acute respiratory failure requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Severe dysregulated systemic inflammation is the putative mechanism. We hypothesize that early prolonged methylprednisolone (MP) treatment could accelerate disease resolution, decreasing the need for intensive care unit (ICU) admission and mortality.

Recently, during the pandemic infection of the novel SARS-CoV-2, some cases of Guillan-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been reported. The aim of this work is to report the natural history of patients with GBS, both COVID and not-COVID related, hospitalized in Liguria region, during lock down period, in order to assess clinical features of both groups and possible managements pitfalls due to pandemic emergency. Fifteen GBS patients were admitted to the Hospitals of Liguria, from February 15th to May 3rd 2020, six with SARS-CoV-2 infection and nine without infection.

Coverage of the requirements of first and second level stroke unit in Italy.

Neurol Sci

March 2021

Department of Neuroscience, Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Genetics, Maternal and Child Health, University of Genova and IRCCS ICS Maugeri, Genova, Pavia, Italy.

Background And Aim: In the scientific literature, there is unanimous consensus that hospitalization in stroke unit (SU) is the most important treatment for stroke patients. In this regard, the Act number 70/2015 by the Italian government identified specific skills that contribute to a classification of SU and outlined a "hub and spoke" stroke network. The aim of our study was to check the coverage of requirements of first and second level SU in the national territory and to shed light on any deficit or misdistribution of resources.

Objective: Moderate to severe spasticity is commonly reported in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and its management is still a challenge. Cannabinoids were recently suggested as add-on therapy for the treatment of spasticity and chronic pain in MS but there is no conclusive scientific evidence on their safety, especially on cognition and over long periods. The aim of this prospective pilot study was to assess the long-term effects of a tetrahydrocannabinol-cannabidiol (THC/CBD) oromucosal spray (Sativex®) on cognition, mood and anxiety.

Multiparametric approach to congestion for predicting long-term survival in heart failure.

J Cardiol

January 2020

Section of Cardiovascular Diseases, Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation, University of Bari, Bari, Italy.

Background: Congestion is a marker of adverse prognosis in patients with heart failure (HF). In addition to brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), estimated plasma volume status (ePVS), bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA), and blood urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio (BUN/Cr) are emerging as new markers for congestion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of BNP, ePVS, BIVA, and BUN/Cr in HF.

Management of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Focus on the Elderly.

Drugs Aging

October 2019

Renal Division, ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo, Department of Health Sciences, S. Paolo Hospital, University of Milan, Via A. di Rudinì, 8, 20142, Milan, Italy.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a major complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), responsible for skeletal and vascular damage with increased risk of bone fractures, cardiovascular events, and mortality. However, the optimal serum parathormone (PTH) levels for improving clinical outcomes remain uncertain. Treatment of SHPT is based on nutritional therapy, phosphate binders, vitamin D, and calcimimetics, but none of these interventions has ever been tested against placebo in randomized controlled trials.
