Background: Diverting ileostomy is a common procedure in rectal cancer surgery, but it is sometimes associated with a nonnegligible rate of complications. The primary aim of this study was to analyze the incidence and types of stoma-related complications for ileostomy creation after rectal cancer resection. The secondary aims were to report the indications, the technical details, and the efficacy of stoma care provided by ostomy nurses.

Article Synopsis
  • Maternal COVID-19 is linked to worse outcomes for mothers, but its effects on pregnant women with multiple sclerosis (MS) had not been thoroughly examined prior to this study.
  • This multicenter study focused on pregnant women with MS who contracted COVID-19, assessing their maternal and fetal health outcomes compared to a control group.
  • Findings revealed that while COVID-19 increased the risk of maternal complications, it did not significantly affect rates of spontaneous abortion or fetal malformations.

  • The study aimed to analyze the characteristics of users of electronic devices, like smartphones and tablets, among low-vision rehabilitation patients in Italy.
  • Findings revealed that electronic device users were younger, had poorer reading speeds and visual acuity, but were better at performing daily living activities, especially when using portable devices.
  • The conclusion highlighted that using electronic devices, particularly smartphones and tablets, is linked to an improved quality of life related to vision in people with low vision, although this does not imply causation.

Background And Aims: The Diverticular Inflammation and Complication Assessment (DICA) classification and the Combined Overview on Diverticular Assessment (CODA) were found to be effective in predicting the outcomes of Diverticular Disease (DD). We ascertain whether fecal calprotectin (FC) can further aid in improving risk stratification.

Methods: A three-year international, multicentre, prospective cohort study was conducted involving 43 Gastroenterology and Endoscopy centres.

Higher risk of cerebrospinal fluid escape (CVE) has been associated with the use of specific antiretroviral (ARV) classes, such as protease inhibitors. We assessed whether archived resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) can mediate this relationship by identifying patients treated with incompletely active antiretroviral regimens. A retrospective multicentric study on 282 adult people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and available historical plasma genotype resistance testing (HGRT) for reverse transcriptase (RT) and protease genes between 2001 and 2021.

Recently, cases of fortuitous discovery of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) during hospitalization for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have been reported. These patients did not show a monoclonal B cell expansion before COVID-19 but were diagnosed with CLL upon a sudden lymphocytosis that occurred during hospitalization. The (hyper)lymphocytosis during COVID-19 was also described in patients with overt CLL disease.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of four adalimumab (ADA) biosimilars in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) after they were switched from the original ADA for non-medical reasons.
  • Out of 153 IBD patients, 81% maintained clinical remission during a 12-month follow-up, and there was no significant difference in outcomes among the four biosimilars.
  • However, patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) experienced a higher loss of remission compared to those with Crohn's disease (CD), indicating that switching biosimilars in UC patients may require careful evaluation.

Background: Kidney disease is common in patients with heart failure (HF). The Donadio equation combines plasma creatinine and bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA) to estimate creatinine clearance. This study aimed to compare the Donadio formula to the Cockcroft-Gault (CG), Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study (MDRD-4), and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations in patients with HF.

  • Adalimumab (ADA) biosimilars are more affordable options for treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but data comparing their effectiveness and safety remains limited.* -
  • A study analyzed 533 IBD patients in Italy, measuring clinical activity, remission induction, and safety across four ADA biosimilars (SB5, ABP501, GP2017, and MSB11022).* -
  • Results showed high clinical remission rates (79.6% for new biologics and 81.0% for patients switched from the ADA originator) with low adverse events (6.7%), indicating similar efficacy and safety among the different biosimilars.*

  • Proximal humerus fractures are common, especially in older adults, and while many can be treated conservatively, complex cases increasingly require surgical intervention.
  • A multicenter study in Italy from 2014-2018 evaluated external fixation in 110 patients with these fractures, measuring outcomes at 1, 2, and 6 months using the Oxford Shoulder Scale and DASH scores.
  • Results indicated significant improvement in patient scores over time, supporting external fixation as an effective and less invasive alternative for treating complex proximal humeral fractures, especially in patients with osteoporosis and high functional demands.
