Background: To date, Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) patients have achieved long-term survival of more than 80%. Unfortunately, longer follow-up has shown serious adverse effects of the treatments used. For this reason, therapeutic strategies are becoming more tailored to the individual patient s prognosis.

Aim: To assess the diagnostic role of 18F-FDG PET/CT performed with a hybrid tomograph in the detection of tumoral deposits of recurrent medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
Methods: Nineteen MTC patients with elevated serum calcitonin levels (58-1350 pg/ml) after first treatment were enrolled (11 F, 8 M, mean age 53.4 years, 14 sporadic MTC, 5 MEN-related MTC).

We describe a case of hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) coexistent with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHD). This combination is reported to be extremely rare with no clear demonstration of the clonal relationship between the two conditions. After a previous failure of purine analogue therapy, our patient was successfully treated with rituximab resulting in normalisation of blood cell count cessation of blood transfusion and negative iliac crest biopsy.

Aim: We report here our experience in a larger series of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients who had been treated by (99m)Tc-sestamibi radio-guided surgery (RGS) for (131)Iodine ((131)I)-negative loco-regional recurrent disease.
Methods: Fifty-eight patients with loco-regional (131)I-negative recurrent disease from DTC were studied with (99m)Tc-sestamibi directed RGS using a hand-held 11-mm gamma probe as an intra-operative detector. Patients were selected for RGS on the basis of (a) progressive increase of serum thyroglobulin (Tg) levels after first treatment during follow-up, (b) negative high dose (100 mCi, 3.

Objective: In this paper we report in a larger series the use of radio-probe-guided surgery (RGS) in nonradioiodine avid, well-differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC).
Design: Thirty-seven patients with locoregional recurrent, nonradioiodine avid DTC were studied with (99m)Tc-sestamibi directed RGS using a handheld gamma probe as an intraoperative detector.
Outcome: Twenty-three women and 14 men were followed after RGS for 35.

Immunosuppresive treatment and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) are considered among the most important pathogenetic factors for post-renal transplant bone disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships among vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphism, parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and bone density in renal transplant recipients. We enrolled 75 patients (50 male and 25 female, mean age 47+/-11 years) who had undergone kidney transplantation 53+/-4 months before.

Aim: To investigate the technical, clinical and pathological findings that can, potentially, affect pre-operative lymphoscintigraphy in visualizing sentinel lymph node (SLN) and intra-operative probe detection of SLN in patients with breast cancer.
Methods: One hundred and forty-two consecutive female patients with, clinically, a solitary, small breast cancer and clinically N0 axilla were enrolled. Preoperative lymphoscintigraphy was performed by a single intradermal injection of 99mTc nacolloidal albumin (Nanocoll) the day before surgery.

Multimodality treatment of loco-regional advanced rectal cancer has demonstrated to improve local control and overall survival. Proctoscopy, digital rectal examination (DRE), computer tomography (CT), endorectal ultrasound (ERUS), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) cannot correctly detect downstaging in rectal tumors after chemo radiation therapy (CRT). New imaging techniques, like 18F-FDG PET, may play some role in predicting the pathologic response to CRT before surgical resection.

Background And Aim: Surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) due to a solitary parathyroid adenoma (PA) is moving from traditional bilateral neck exploration (BNE) towards the use of limited neck exploration. The aim of the present study was to define the efficacy of minimally invasive radioguided surgery (MIRS) in PHPT patients with a high probability of a solitary PA with particular regard to benefits achievable in elderly patients.
Patients And Methods: The study population included a total of 266 consecutive PHPT patients who had undergone surgery at our centre between September 1999 and February 2003.
