Male patients, especially the young, are at a higher risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism (RVTE) than females. Recent scientific reports show the use of D-dimer does not help predict RVTE risk in males. In the present report, we reviewed the data obtained in the DULCIS study (main report published in Blood 2014), focusing on D-dimer results recorded in non-elderly patients of both genders included in the study, and their relationship with RVTE events occurring during follow-up.

Propofol-based palliative sedation in terminally ill children with solid tumors: A case series.

The optimal duration of anticoagulation in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) is uncertain. We investigated whether persistently negative D-dimers in patients with vein recanalization or stable thrombotic burden can identify subjects at low recurrence risk. Outpatients with a first VTE (unprovoked or associated with weak risk factors) were eligible after at least 3 months (12 in those with residual thrombosis) of anticoagulation.

About one-third of the cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas occur in patients aged 60 years or more. Nevertheless, there are very few data in the literature regarding the optimal therapeutic approach for both aggressive and indolent histologies. Fludarabine-based combination regimens are an effective choice for younger patients affected by low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, but there is a lack of information about their tolerability and efficacy in older patients.

Up to two thirds of all patients affected by advanced Hodgkin's disease will be cured by chemotherapy alone or by combined chemoradiation modalities. High-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue may be potentially curative for patients progressing under frontline chemotherapy or developing early relapse of disease. In spite of this, an unacceptably high percentage of these high-risk patients will relapse after salvage treatments and die of their disease.

Spinal malignant melanotic schwannoma. Case report.

J Neurosurg Sci

December 1998

Division of Neurosurgery, Garibaldi, S. Luigi-S. Currò, Ascoli-Tomaselli Hospital, Catania, Italy.

The authors report a rare case of spinal cord compression syndrome due to a malignant melanotic schwannoma. Pathogenesis, diagnostic difficulty and therapeutical problems are discussed. The authors conclude that such tumours should be surgically treated due to the possibility of a benign clinical behaviour even in those cases showing malignant histological features.
