Abdom Imaging

July 2006

Interventional Ultrasound Unit, Department Of Medicine, S. Giovanni Di Dio Hospital Aslna 3, Via Mario Vergara Padre, 187, 80027 Frattamaggiore, Naples, Italy.

Background: We describe the clinical and color Doppler ultrasound findings in a series of cases of seeding from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) observed in patients treated with percutaneous ablation therapy (PAT) over a 15-year period.

Methods: We reviewed the clinical and imaging records of 12 patients with cirrhosis (nine men and three women, age range 51-82 years, mean age 63 years) that showed neoplastic seeding from HCC occurring after one or more PAT procedures. Five of 12 cases of seeding were observed as a complication of 1080 PAT procedures (0.

Mediastinal images resembling thymus following 131-I treatment for thyroid cancer.

Monaldi Arch Chest Dis

June 2005

Medical Oncology Department, S. Giovanni di Dio Hospital, via Pirozzi, 80027 Frattaminore, Naples, Italy.

The follow-up of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer conventionally includes serum thyroglobulin and periodic Whole Body Scans. The uptake of 131-I in normal and pathological tissues different from metastatic thyroid cancer sites is a cause of false-positive scans. Among them, mediastinal uptake caused by thymic hyperplasia can be observed.

The early detection of recurrent differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) cells in the post surgery DTC patients relies on the sensitivity of measuring both the level of thyroglobulin (Tg) and 131-Iodine distribution by Whole Body Scan (WBS). Undetectable level of Tg associated with negative WBS or elevated levels of Tg associated with positive WBS ("concordant") is ordinarily indicative of either absence or presence of disease. At times, elevated level of Tg with negative WBS or low levels of Tg with positive WBS ("discordant") could also occur.

High and intermediate grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) require treatments with aggressive chemotherapy schedules. However, low grade NHLs display a low chemoresponsiveness and patients aged >65 years often do not tolerate anthracycline and corticosteroid-containing chemotherapy regimens. Therapeutic options in this subset of patients are watchful waiting, oral alkylating agents, purine nucleoside analogues, combination chemotherapy, interferon and monoclonal antibodies.

We have carried out a study into retinal sensitivity alterations in the course of primary open angle glaucoma to see if their appearance and evolution might be influenced by concomitant diabetes mellitus. The visual field examination (Perimeter Octopus 500 EZ, programme G1) indicated prevalent sensitivity defects in the superior hemifield, both in glaucoma only subjects and in those with diabetes as well. As to the inferior hemifield, a greater, statistically significant, retinal sensitivity defect was found in the inferior temporal quadrant of the left eye in the group of diabetics.
