Objectives: Elderly hospitalized patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) flare and concurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) are considered at high risk of IBD-related complications. We aimed to evaluate the short, intermediate, and long-term post-discharge complications among these patients.
Methods: A retrospective multicenter cohort study assessing outcomes of elderly individuals (≥60 years) hospitalized for an IBD flare who were tested for CDI (either positive or negative) and discharged.

Background: The reduction in long-term mortality after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is less pronounced than that of in-hospital mortality among patients with AMI complicated by heart failure (HF) and/or in those with a high residual thrombotic risk (HTR).
Aim: To investigate the relative prognostic significance of HTR and HF in AMI survivors.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients admitted for AMI in 2014-2015 in all Italian hospitals.

Purpose: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the gold standard in the treatment of advanced hip osteoarthritis. However, hip resurfacing (HR) arthroplasty may present a viable alternative. The aim of this study was to compare complications, implant survivorship, and functional outcomes between HR and THA, to assess HR as a valid and safe alternative to THA.

Aims: In patients undergoing pacemaker implantation with no prior history of heart failure (HF), the presence of left bundle branch block (LBBB) has been identified as an independent predictor of HF-related death or hospitalization, while the prognostic significance of right bundle branch block (RBBB) remains uncertain. We aimed to assess the long-term risk of all-cause mortality in patients with a standard indication for permanent pacing and normal or moderately depressed left ventricular function when RBBB is detected at the time of implantation.
Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 1348 consecutive patients who had undergone single- or dual-chamber pacemaker implantation at the study center, from January 1990 to December 2022.

Purpose: In the last decades, there has been a refinement in total hip arthroplasty, which allowed surgeons to achieve the highest performance and better patient outcomes. Preoperative planning in primary hip arthroplasty is an essential step that guides the surgeon in restoring the anatomy and biomechanics of the joint. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of the 2D digital planning, considering cup sizing, stem sizing, and limb length discrepancy.

In breast cancer volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) planning, the rotation of the gantry around the target implies a greater dose spreading to the whole heart, compared to tangential-field standard treatment. A consecutive cohort of 121 breast cancer patients treated with the VMAT technique was investigated. The correlation of breast volume, heart volume and lung volume with mean heart dose (mHD) and mean and maximum LAD dose (mLAD dose, MLAD dose) was tested, and a subsequent a linear regression analysis was carried out.

Background: Although multiple sclerosis (MS) Intimacy and Sexuality Questionnaire-19 (MSISQ-19) is a widely applied tool, no unique definition of sexual dysfunction (SD) based on its score exists.
Objective: To explore the impact of different MSISQ-19 cut-offs on SD prevalence and associated risk factors, providing relevant information for its application in research and clinical settings.
Methods: After defining SD according to two different MSISQ-19 cut-offs in 1155 people with MS (pwMS), we evaluated SD prevalence and association with sociodemographic and clinical features, mood status and disability via logistic regression.

Despite being a common issue in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS), sexual dysfunction is still underinvestigated. This work aims to assess the potential determinants of sexual dysfunction in pwMS by considering its relationship with disease severity (in terms of global disability), illness perception, and depressive symptoms. In this multicenter study, 1010 pwMS responded to an online survey.

Recent cross-sectional investigations suggest a relationship between frailty, as measured by Frailty Index (FI), and multiple sclerosis (MS). However, if and how frailty is associated with relapse activity in MS is still unknown. To explore this issue, a one-year follow-up study involving 471 patients was conducted.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic, progressive and relapsing inflammatory disorders of unknown etiology that may cause disability over time. Data from epidemiologic studies indicate that diet may play a role in the risk of developing and the course of IBD. It is known that the group of beneficial bacteria was reduced in the IBD and that the Mediterranean diet (MD)-which is defined as eating habits characterized by high consumption of plant foods, mainly cereals, vegetables, fruit as well as olive oil, and small portions of dairy products, sweets, sugar and meat products-affects gut microbiota, enriching beneficial bacteria, which support gut barrier function and reduce inflammation.

Purpose: To compare clinical outcomes and surgical times of two different types of total knee arthroplasty(TKA), postero-stabilized(PS) and condylar-stabilized(CS), in relation to posterior tibial slope(PTS) values and the deviation of these values from the surgical technique.
Methods: 168 patients undergoing TKA surgery between 2016 and 2020 met our inclusion criteria. For each case, gender, age at surgery, operating time, type of implant and preoperative PTS(preop-PTS) and postoperative PTS(postop-PTS) measurements were collected; difference(∆PTS) between preop-PTS and postop-PTS was also calculated.

Background: Several studies have reported that the combination of high TG and low HDL-C, as simplified by the TG/HDL-C ratio, was a predictor of cardiovascular disease independent of LDL-C level. Nevertheless, poor data are available on the predictive role of TG/HDL-C ratio in very high risk (VHR) patients with chronic coronary syndromes (CCS).
Methods: Using the data from the STable Coronary Artery Diseases RegisTry (START) study, an Italian nationwide registry, we assessed the association between the TG/HDL-C ratio and baseline clinical characteristics, pharmacological treatment, and major adverse cardio-cerebrovascular events (MACCE) at 1 year in a large cohort of CCS patients at VHR.

Pregnancy-related issues in women with multiple sclerosis (MS) have been receiving increasing attention, with particular interest for the use of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) before conception, during pregnancy, and postpartum, including breastfeeding. The risk of relapse is higher in the early postpartum period, especially in cases of significant disease activity prior to pregnancy, and thus treatment resumption and/or switching strategies might be necessary. Moreover, breastfeeding provides unmatched health benefits for babies and mothers, and is recommended as the best source of nutrition for infants.

Background: Hip prosthetic replacement surgery is the gold standard for patients affected by symptomatic osteoarthritis. The ceramic-on-metal hybrid hard-on-hard bearing was initially launched on the market with the purpose of reducing adhesive and corrosion wear, loss of metal debris and ions and risk of fracture and squeaking. However, this bearing was withdrawn from the market, in the apprehension of local and systemic toxicity.
