Infectious Diseases - Hepatology Division, POIT Department, National Institute for Infectious Diseases L. Spallanzani, UOC Infectious Diseases - Hepatology, Via Portuense 292, Rome, RM 00149, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Asymptomatic individuals make up a significant portion (25-45%) of SARS-CoV-2 infections, particularly among those on mild immunosuppressive therapy, leading to potential extended virus spread.
  • A study involving 278 liver transplant recipients in Central Italy found that serology testing every four months effectively increased infection detection rates, revealing that 31 individuals had either past or active SARS-CoV-2 infections.
  • The research indicated that factors like gender and kidney function affected the likelihood of being asymptomatic, and the overall anti-SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among liver transplant recipients was similar to the general population in the region (11.2%).

Aim: Radiation therapy is a cornerstone of oncological treatment and oncological patients show greater risk of developing complications related to COVID-19 infection. Stringent social restrictions have ensured a significant reduction in the spread of the virus, but also gave rise to a number of critical issues for radiation oncology wards. For this reason, the Directors of the Radiation Oncology Departments (RODs) of Lazio, Abruzzo and Molise regions shared their experience and ideas in order to create a common document that may assist in facing the negative impacts of the pandemic on radiation oncology wards and patients.

Background: Metabolic Acidosis (MA) is a disturbance of the acid-base balance that can occur in preterm and critically ill term neonates due to different etiologies. Intravenous sodium bicarbonate (SB) has been traditionally used to correct such unbalance, despite the lack of evidence about its safety and efficacy. In literature, reported undesirable effects of treatment with SB in neonates include worsening of intracellular acidosis, impairment of myocardial function, cerebral blood flow fluctuations and intracranial hemorrhage.

Purpose: In the earliest stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR), a dysfunction of Müller cells, characterized by high levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and aquaporins (AQP), has been observed. Although chronic hyperglycemia causes the activation of Müller cells, the effect of glycemic fluctuations is yet unknown. The aim of the study was to analyze the impact of glucose variability on rat retinal Müller cells (rMC-1) adapted to either normal (5 mM) or high (25 mM) glucose levels.

Achieving and maintaining recommended glycemic targets without causing adverse e ffects, including hypoglycemia, is challenging, especially in older patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The introduction of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, more than 10 years ago, has provided an alternative to conventional medications for the intensification of glucose-lowering treatment after failure of metformin monotherapy, and therefore, marked an important advance in the management of T2DM. By prolonging the activity of incretin hormones, DPP-4 inhibitors induce insulin release and decrease glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner.

January 2019

Unit of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, S. Giovanni Calibita Fatebenefratelli Hospital, Department of Systems Medicine, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy.

Objectives: It has been already confirmed that retinal neurodegeneration has a predictive value in the development of microvascular alterations in diabetic retinopathy. However, no data are available on the association between neuroretinal dysfunction and peripheral motor unit loss. Our study, therefore, was aimed at investigating the hypothesis that retinal neurodegeneration could be considered an early marker of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).

February 2019

University Department of Pediatrics, IRCCS Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital, Rome, Italy (Ms Vanzi); and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), S. Giovanni Calibita Fatebenefratelli Hospital, Rome, Italy (Ms Pitaro).

Early premature infants are subjected to many invasive procedures in neonatal intensive care units, and effective skin antisepsis is an essential step in caring for these vulnerable patients. Nevertheless, preterm infants have an anatomically and physiologically immature skin and preserving their skin integrity is essential to avoid the risk of local and systemic complications. Skin particularities of newborns reduce the list of available antiseptics in neonatology.
