Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates late neonatal hypocalcemia (LNH) in Turkey, focusing on the link between LNH and vitamin D deficiency, which is common in newborns presenting with seizures.
  • Conducted across 61 neonatal centers, the research included 96 affected neonates and 93 mothers, analyzing various blood serum markers related to calcium and vitamin D levels.
  • Findings revealed that a significant majority of both neonates (86.5%) and mothers (93%) were vitamin D deficient, suggesting the need for improved vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy to help reduce cases of LNH.

Background: To achieve gas exchange goals and mitigate lung injury, infants who fail with conventional ventilation (CV) are generally switched to high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV). Although preferred in many neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), research on this type of rescue HFOV has not been reported recently.

Methods: An online registry database for a multicenter, prospective study was set to evaluate factors affecting the response of newborn infants to rescue HFOV treatment.

Objective: The majority of ovarian cancer patients are initially diagnosed at an advanced-stage [1]. Upper abdominal bulky metastasis cephalad to the greater omentum reported to be present in 42% of patients [2]. Many complex surgical procedures such as splenectomy, pancreatectomy, mobilization and partial resection of liver, porta hepatis dissection, diaphragmatic peritonectomy and resection are frequently performed to achieve complete resection of metastatic disease [3].

J Matern Fetal Neonatal Med

January 2017

d Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology , Suleymaniye Maternity Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul , Turkey.

Aims: Classic literature states that the fetal ureter should not be visible unless dilated. Our main objective was to produce an effective, reproducible method for fetal ureter depiction during an anatomic survey. Our secondary objectives were to record the frequency of visible ureters among normal fetuses and among fetuses with mild pyelectasis and also to determine the diameter of the sonographically demonstrated ureter.

Flavopiridol is a flavone that inhibits several cyclin‑dependent kinases and exhibits potent growth‑inhibitory activity, apoptosis and G1‑phase arrest in a number of human tumor cell lines. Flavopiridol is currently undergoing investigation in human clinical trials. The present study focused on the effect of flavopiridol in cell proliferation, cell cycle progression and apoptosis in prostate cancer stem cells (CSCs).

In this study, we compared the immunoreactivities of Bcl-2, Bax and p53 proteins in ovarian tumors and related the immunohistochemical findings to the histological type of the tumors. Formalin-fixed, paraffin wax-embedded tissue sections from 40 patients who had serous-mucinous borderline tumors and serous-mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ovary (n=10 each) were stained with hematoxylin-eosin (H&E). After histopathological examination, serial sections were stained immunohistochemically with primary antibodies to Bcl-2, Bax and p53 using an avidin-biotin-peroxidase method.

Cancer stem cells (CSC) isolated from multiple tumor types differentiate and when cultured in serum; however, the factors responsible for their differentiation have not yet been identified. The first aim of the present study was to identify CD133/CD44 DU145 prostate CSCs and compare their profiles with non-CSCs as bulk counterparts of the population. Subsequently, the two populations continued to be three-dimensional multicellular spheroids.

Purpose: Previous studies have shown that the underlying pathophysiologic mechanism in children with breath holding may be generalised autonomic dysregulation. Thus, we performed cardiac rhythm and heart rate variability analyses using 24-hour Holter monitoring to evaluate the cardiac effects of autonomic dysregulation in children with breath-holding spells.

Methods: We performed cardiac rhythm and heart rate analyses using 24-hour Holter monitors to evaluate the cardiac effects of autonomic dysregulation in children during a breath-holding spell.
