Preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate is an inexpensive but useful tool in predicting cardiovascular perioperative complications. Estimated glomerular filtration rate, especially considering its interaction with age, might act as a proxy for severity of cardiovascular disease. Further studies regarding the predictive power of estimated glomerular filtration rate to identify patients at risk of perioperative cardiovascular complications are essential.

Objective: Delayed neurocognitive recovery, previously known as postoperative cognitive dysfunction, is a common complication affecting older adults after surgery. This study aims to address the knowledge gap in postoperative neurocognitive recovery by exploring the relationship between subjective experiences, performance-based measurements, and blood biomarkers.
Design: Mixed-methods study with a convergent parallel (QUAL+quan) design.

Objective: To compare work loss after starting tumour necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi), rituximab, abatacept or tocilizumab in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Methods: We used data from the Swedish Rheumatology Quality Register to identify patients aged 19-62 years who were treated with TNFi (n=15 093), rituximab (n=2123), abatacept (n=1877) or tocilizumab (n=1720) between 2007 and 2020. Data on work loss (0-365 days per year) from sick leave and disability pension were retrieved from linkage to the Social Insurance Agency.

Background: The 2006 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease/Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (NIAID/FAAN) anaphylaxis criteria are widely used in clinical care and research. In 2020, the World Allergy Organization (WAO) published modified criteria that have not been uniformly adopted. Different criteria contribute to inconsistent care and research outcomes.

Background: The effectiveness and preferred reconstruction methods of pancreatectomy associated with vein resection (PAVR) for pancreatic cancer, especially for the extensive portal vein/superior mesenteric vein (PV/SMV) resections (more than 4 cm), are still subjects of debate. The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety and feasibility of PAVR by analyzing data from two large institutions from different regions.
Methods: From 2008 to 2018, we identified consecutive series of patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent PAVR at Karolinska University Hospital (KUH), Sweden, and Cancer Institute Hospital, Japanese Foundation of Cancer Research (JFCR), Japan.

A comprehensive investigation into the mechanism of VEGFR1 protein in this process was undertaken. Lentivirus-mediated RNA interference was employed to inhibit the expression of LINC00511 in breast cancer cell lines, and changes in breast cancer stem cell markers, including CD44+/CD24-, were monitored using flow cytometry. Additionally, the interaction between VEGFR1 protein and LINC00511 and the activation of its downstream signaling pathway were investigated through co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) and Western blot techniques.

Background: Sweden introduced HPV vaccination in 2006, administered through opportunistic, subsidized, catch-up and school-based programs. Notably, genital warts (GW) are the first observable clinical outcome following infection by HPV-6/11, targeted by vaccination. We aim to gain knowledge of the incidence of GW in Sweden and evaluate its change throughout vaccination programs.

Gene editing is a novel technology within gene therapy, which changes sequences in chromosomal DNA with precision. Even if there are alternative strategies, the Nobel Prize-winning CRISPR/Cas technology has become the dominating principle. During recent years base editing and prime editing, permitting editing without DNA double-strand breaks, have been developed.

Background: The Pre-EMPT study aimed to determine if structured exercise could reduce length of stay, post-operative complications and improve fitness and health-related quality of life (HQRL) in patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and oesophagectomy.
Methods: A prospective non-randomised trial compared a standard care pathway (control) to a structured prehabilitation exercise programme (intervention) commenced before NAC and surgery for oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Length of hospital stay and post-operative complications were recorded.

Single particle profiling (SPP) is a unique methodology to study nanoscale bioparticles such as liposomes, lipid nanoparticles, extracellular vesicles, and lipoproteins in a single particle and high throughput manner. The initial version requires the single photon counting modules for data acquisition, which limits its adoptability. Here, we present imaging-based SPP (iSPP) that can be performed by imaging a spot over time in the common imaging mode with confocal detectors.

Hypophosphatemic rickets is a rare bone disease characterized by short stature, bone deformities, impaired bone mineralization, and dental problems. Most commonly, hypophosphatemic rickets is caused by pathogenic variants in the X-chromosomal gene, but autosomal dominant and recessive forms also exist. We investigated a Finnish family in which the son (index, 29 yr) and mother (56 yr) had hypophosphatemia since childhood.

Introduction: Periodontitis is associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). One hypothesis posits that this connection arises from the formation of autoantibodies against citrullinated proteins (ACPA) in inflamed gums, possibly triggered by . We previously demonstrated an increased antibody response to arginine gingipains (anti-Rgp IgG), not only in individuals with severe periodontitis compared to controls, but in RA versus controls, with an association to ACPA.

Background And Purpose: Informed consent from trial participants is mandatory. In a randomized clinical trial, we investigated (1) differences in knowledge and understanding of trial information between patients who participated and those who refrained, (2) differences in perceptions of information, and (3) differences in satisfaction with the information.
Patients: After the decision about participation in the randomized study, 'Surgery versus radiotherapy for locally advanced prostate cancer' (SPCG-15), patients were sent questionnaires ('Quality of Informed Consent', EORTC QLQ-INFO25).

Background: Isolated rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is characterized by abnormal behaviors in REM sleep and is considered as a prodromal symptom of alpha-synucleinopathies. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) studies have unveiled altered functional connectivity (rsFC) in patients with iRBD. However, the associations between intra- and inter-network rsFC with clinical symptoms and neuropsychological functioning in iRBD remain unclear.

Background: Many studies have found more severe COVID-19 outcomes in migrants and ethnic minorities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, while recent evidence also suggests higher risk of longer-term consequences. We studied the risk of a long COVID diagnosis among adult residents in Sweden, dependent on country of birth and accounting for known risk factors for long COVID.
Methods: We used linked Swedish administrative registers between March 1, 2020 and April 1, 2023, to estimate the risk of a long COVID diagnosis in the adult population that had a confirmed COVID-19 infection.
