Article Synopsis
  • Primary liver cancers, like HCC, ICC, and cHCC-CCA, are major causes of cancer-related deaths, and distinguishing between these types can be challenging due to their similar features.
  • This study analyzed 140 patients who had liver tumor resections, reclassifying tumors and comparing the clinicopathological characteristics and survival rates of HCC, ICC, and cHCC-CCA.
  • The results showed that most patients had HCC, with worse overall survival and disease-free survival for ICC and cHCC-CCA, highlighting the need for careful evaluation to identify cholangiolar components, which signal a poorer prognosis.

Background: The frequency of antibodies in autoimmune encephalitis (AIE) may vary in different populations, however, data from developing countries are lacking. To describe the clinical profile of AIE in Brazil, and to evaluate seasonality and predictors of AIE in adult and pediatric patients.

Methods: We evaluated patients with possible AIE from 17 centers of the Brazilian Autoimmune Encephalitis Network (BrAIN) between 2018 and 2022.

Although the association of polyols/polyphosphates/fluoride has been demonstrated to promote remarkable effects on dental enamel, little is known on their combined effects on biofilms. This study assessed the effects of solutions containing fluoride/sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP)/xylitol/erythritol on dual-species biofilms of and . Biofilms were grown in the continuous presence of these actives alone or in different associations.

The skin serves a substantial number of physiological purposes and is exposed to numerous biological and chemical agents owing to its large surface area and accessibility. Yet, current skin models are limited in emulating the multifaceted functions of skin tissues due to a lack of effort on the optimization of biomaterials and techniques at different skin layers for building skin frameworks. Here, we use biomaterial-based approaches and bioengineered techniques to develop a 3D skin model with layers of endothelial cell networks, dermal fibroblasts, and multilayered keratinocytes.

Simulating CO₂ leakages from CCS to determine Zn toxicity using the marine microalgae Pleurochrysis roscoffensis.

Chemosphere

February 2016

Departamento de Química-Física, Facultad de Ciencias Del Mar y Ambientales, Universidad de Cádiz, UNESCO/UNITWIN Wicop, Polígono Río San Pedro s/n, 11510 Puerto Real, Cádiz, Spain. Electronic address:

Due to the current climate change and ocean acidification, a new technology for CO2 mitigation has been proposed, the Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS). However, there is an ecological risk associated with potential CO2 leakages from the sub-seabed storages sites. To evaluate the effects related to CO2 leakages, laboratory-scales experiments were performed using the marine microalgae Pleurochrysis roscoffensis.

Ecological relevance of Sentinels' biomarker responses: a multi-level approach.

Mar Environ Res

May 2014

Departamento de Bioquímica, CCB, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, SC 88040-900, Brazil.

In response to the need for more sensitive and rapid indicators of environmental quality, sublethal effects on the lowest levels of biological organization have been investigated. The ecological relevance of these responses assumes a prevailing role to assure effectiveness as indicator of ecological status. This study aimed to investigate the linkages between biomarker responses of caged bivalves and descriptive parameters of macrobenthic community structure.

This study optimizes two factors, pH and initial [H2O2], in the ultraviolet (UV)/H2O2/microwave (MW) process through experimental design and assesses the effect of MWs on the colour removal of an azo-dye (tartrazine) solution that was favoured by an acidic pH. The estimated optimal conditions were: initial [H2O2] = 2.0 mmol L(-1) and pH = 2.

Aim: To evaluate the association between polymorphisms XRCC1 Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln and XRCC3 Thr241Met and the risk for chronic gastritis and gastric cancer, in a Southeastern Brazilian population.

Methods: Genotyping by PCR-RFLP was carried out on 202 patients with chronic gastritis (CG) and 160 patients with gastric cancer (GC), matched to 202 (C1) and 150 (C2) controls, respectively.

Results: No differences were observed among the studied groups with regard to the genotype distribution of XRCC1 codons 194 and 399 and of XRCC3 codon 241.

Expression of fibroblast growth factor-8 and its cognate receptors, fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR)-3c and-4, in fetal bovine preantral follicles.

Mol Reprod Dev

March 2005

Departamento de Fisiologia, Instituto de Biociências, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Botucatu, Sãao Paulo, Brasil.

Paracrine cell signaling is thought to be important for ovarian follicle development, and a role for some members of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family have been suggested. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that FGF-8 and its cognate receptors (FGFR-3c and FGFR-4) are expressed in bovine preantral follicles. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify bovine FGF-8, FGFR-3c, and FGFR-4 from preantral follicle samples and a variety of fetal and adult tissues.

The effects of acute cocaine administration in paradoxical sleep-deprived rats.

Addict Biol

October 2000

Department of Psychobiology-Universidade Federal de Saão Paulo, Brazil.

Recent studies demonstrate the action of cocaine on reward pathways, which are activated by pleasant stimuli. Cocaine's mechanism of action involves the blockade of dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake by the presynaptic terminal. Paradoxical sleep (PS) deprivation is known to induce several behavioural alterations most of which suggest the occurrence of supersensitivity of D₂ and a subsensitivity of β₁and β₂receptors.

Blomstrand chondrodysplasia: a lethal sclerosing skeletal dysplasia. Case report and review.

Pediatr Radiol

November 1999

Discipline of Genetics, Department of Morphology, Universidade Federal de Saão Paulo, Rua Botucatu, 740, Vila Clementino, CEP 04023-900 Saão Paulo, SP, Brazil.

We report a female stillborn with typical clinical, radiological, and anatomopathological features of Blomstrand chondrodysplasia. The main findings in this lethal osteochondrodysplasia are osteosclerosis and advanced skeletal maturation. Autosomal recessive inheritance has been proposed because of parental consanguinity of affected siblings in all reported cases, including this one.

Background: In 1992 a major vaccination strategy against measles-mumps-rubella was introduced in the State of Saão Paulo, Brazil. This strategy was based on mathematical models and comprised a pulse vaccination covering all children aged 1-10 years, followed by the inclusion of this vaccine in the routine calendar at 15 months of age. The present work reports the evaluation of the efficacy of this mixed vaccination strategy.

Samples from 2 different locations within the same euthyroid multinodular goiters (SMG) and normal (N) human thyroids were assayed for their content of DNA, thyroglobulin (Tg), and stable iodine (1), and determined the response of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) to TSH and NaF. Quantitative morphological estimation of histological components in the thyroid was performed and correlated with functional parameters. Regardless the zonal evaluation, in SMG the mean (± SD) DNA content (⧎g/mg tissue) (1.
