Coordinated activation and inhibition of F-actin supports the movements of morphogenesis. Understanding the proteins that regulate F-actin is important, since these proteins are mis-regulated in diseases like cancer. Our studies of C.

We aimed to investigate the relationship between sex differences and outcomes of patients with MINOCA.
Methods And Results: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from their inception until August 2023 for relevant studies.

Normalization is a crucial step in the analysis of single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) counts data. Its principal objectives are reduction of systematic biases primarily introduced through technical sources and transformation of counts to make them more amenable for the application of established statistical frameworks. In the standard workflows, normalization is followed by feature selection to identify highly variable genes (HVGs) that capture most of the biologically meaningful variation across the cells.

Cardiac amyloidosis is a great masquerader that often results in misdiagnosis of this condition. Early clinical recognition is crucial for timely therapeutic interventions to improve survival in patients with cardiac amyloidosis. Currently, Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications work best if started early in the disease.

Objective: Screening ultrasound for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) identifies lesions which require further characterization by a contrast-enhanced exam to non-invasively diagnose HCC. While ultrasound is recommended in screening, some HCC can be occult on grayscale imaging. The purpose of this study was to determine if the addition of ultrasound contrast (sulfahexafluoride) to screening ultrasound for HCC can identify more HCC lesions than grayscale sonographic imaging alone.

Endovascular coiling techniques have emerged as an alternative and effective approach for treating intracranial aneurysms. However, in some cases, previously coiled aneurysms may require secondary treatment with surgical clipping, presenting a more complex challenge compared with the initial intervention. We present the case of a 39-year-old man with a residual class III Raymond-Roy occlusion partially coiled aneurysm at the left middle cerebral artery bifurcation (Video 1).

Objective: To compare the 2-year reoperation rates for adjacent segment disease between patients with pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis (PI-LL) mismatch postoperatively and patients with normal PI-LL measurements.
Methods: Patients undergoing elective 1- to 2-level lumbar fusion for degenerative conditions between 2016 and 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Spinopelvic radiographic parameters immediately postoperation were measured, and PI-LL mismatch was determined using the age-adjusted thresholds defined in Lafage et al.

Mechanistic Target of Rapamycin Complex 1 (mTORC1) is a master metabolic regulator that is active in nearly all proliferating eukaryotic cells; however, it is unclear whether mTORC1 activity changes throughout the cell cycle. We find that mTORC1 activity oscillates from lowest in mitosis/G1 to highest in S/G2. The interphase oscillation is mediated through the TSC complex but is independent of major known regulatory inputs, including Akt and Mek/Erk signaling.

ATPase, class 1, type 8 A, member 2 (ATP8A2) is a P4-ATPase with a critical role in phospholipid translocation across the plasma membrane. Pathogenic variants in ATP8A2 are known to cause cerebellar ataxia, impaired intellectual development, and disequilibrium syndrome 4 (CAMRQ4) which is often associated with encephalopathy, global developmental delay, and severe motor deficits. Here, we present a family with two siblings born from a consanguineous, first-cousin union from Sudan presenting with global developmental delay, intellectual disability, spasticity, ataxia, nystagmus, and thin corpus callosum.

Despite the high prevalence of domestic violence amongst brain injury patients, there is a notable gap in screening and management training for providers. To provide optimal patient care, brain injury medicine clinicians must screen, recognize, and treat patients who have experienced domestic violence.

Background: Skin disease is a significant contributor to the global disease burden, with dermatologic health disparities adding to this burden. Internists, general practitioners, and other medical professionals often manage skin disease with limited exposure to dermatologic education in medical school.
Objective: This study evaluated a brief educational intervention for medical students to improve dermatologic knowledge, diagnostic and communication skills, and comfort in performing dermatology-focused physical exams.

The 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines recommended thyroid lobectomy (TL) as an alternative to total thyroidectomy (TT) for the surgical treatment of low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer. Increasing use of TL has since been reported despite concerns for an increased risk of disease recurrence and need for reoperation. This study sought to compare reoperation rates among patients who underwent initial TL or TT for malignancy, characterize trends at centers based on operative volume, and examine factors associated with reoperation.

Although total mesorectal excision (TME) remains the standard of care for rectal cancer, including early-stage T1/T2 rectal adenocarcinoma, local excision may be warranted for these early-stage tumors in a select group of patients who may decline surgery or may be nonoptimal surgical candidates. Operative approaches for transanal local excision include transanal endoscopic microsurgery or transanal minimally invasive surgery for tumors <4 cm, occupying <40% of the rectal circumference and <10 cm from the dentate line. The use of preoperative chemoradiation therapy may help to downstage tumors and allow for more limited resections, and chemoradiation may also be employed postoperatively.

Background: Intracranial Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is an exceedingly rare condition that is at an increased risk of misdiagnosis and mismanagement, especially when initial radiographic evidence points to an alternative pathology.
Observations: The authors describe the case of a 75-year-old female who presented with a posterior fossa lesion initially concerning for a vascular malformation on computed tomography imaging due to perilesional hypervascularity. Subsequent angiography revealed a developmental venous anomaly (DVA) but no arteriovenous shunting.

Objectives: Using Texas STAR (seeking transparency in application to residency), we aimed to 1) examine predictors of matching success in integrated plastic surgery residency programs and 2) assess the reliability of the tool.
Design, Setting, And Participants: A retrospective analysis of self-reported nationwide data of plastic surgery residency applicants between 2021 and 2023 across 146 participating medical schools were included. A comparison analysis was performed between matched and unmatched applicants using chi-squared tests, t-tests, and logistic regression models.

Successful reproduction relies on the union of a single chromosomally normal egg and sperm. Chromosomally normal eggs develop from precursor cells, called oocytes, that have undergone accurate chromosome segregation. The process of chromosome segregation is governed by the oocyte spindle, a unique cytoskeletal machine that splits chromatin content of the meiotically dividing oocyte.

In Brief: The mechanisms that determine the length of pregnancy remain undetermined. Here, we review what has been previously published on the topic and incorporate new data to describe a molecular model in which placental stress and fetal signaling ultimately lead to labor onset in uncomplicated pregnancies.
Abstract: The mechanisms that govern the length of human pregnancy have not been determined, while preterm birth remains the leading cause of death and disability in newborns worldwide.

Objective: The American Academy of Pediatrics endorses a paradigm shift toward promoting early relational health (ERH) in pediatrics. Pediatric clinicians have a unique opportunity to promote ERH, yet little work has sought parents' perspectives on how clinicians can do so effectively. We sought to understand diverse parents' perspectives on ERH and the role of pediatric clinicians in supporting it.

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) mortality varies based on multiple risk factors. While NPC mortality is higher in Asia, little is known about Asian subgroups in the United States (US).
Methods: Using the 2005-2020 National Vital Statistics System, we examined NPC mortality by age, race (non-Hispanic black, Hispanic white (HW), non-Hispanic white (NHW), Chinese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese), sex, and nativity (Untied States or foreign-born).
