Purpose: Altered F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) biodistribution due to patient factors such as exercise and inadequate fasting are well established causes of limited diagnostic efficacy. In addition, medications such as G-CSF are known to affect uptake of FDG by bone marrow and spleen. In this study, we present a case of increased white adipose uptake in a pediatric lymphoma patient who recently received high dose dexamethasone and review the relevant literature regarding this rare and poorly understood pattern of altered FDG biodistribution.

Objective: To predict one-year seizure freedom, using a combination of relevant clinical variables, following stereotactic laser amygdalohippocampotomy for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy in a series of 101 patients.

Methods: Eight predictors of seizure freedom were selected based on their association with medial temporal lobe epilepsy: (1) MRI evidence of mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS); (2) unitemporal interictal epileptiform discharges; (3) absence of generalized tonic-clonic seizures; (4) history of febrile seizures; (5) onset of epilepsy ≤16 years; (6) absence of an auditory, visual, or vertiginous aura; and (7) unitemporal ictal onset; (8) unitemporal PET hypometabolism. We compared four multivariate models: "MTS," using just evidence of MTS; "FULL," using all eight binary predictors; "AIC" using backwards selection of variables; and "SCORE," using a 0-to-8-point ordinal score awarding one point for each binary predictor.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cancer cells rely on NADPH to manage oxidative stress and support growth, primarily produced through the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway, with G6PD as a key enzyme in that process.
  • - Research using genetically-altered mice shows that while removing G6PD significantly reduces tumor growth in cancers with Kras and Lkb1 mutations, it does not affect those with Kras and P53 mutations.
  • - The study reveals that tumors with G6PD loss find alternative NADPH sources via serine metabolism, highlighting a potential treatment strategy for specific lung cancers with KRAS and LKB1 mutations by targeting G6PD.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how well experienced reviewers can differentiate between AI-generated and original research abstracts in shoulder and elbow surgery, alongside evaluating an AI detection tool's performance.
  • Out of 50 abstracts evaluated by eight peer reviewers, only 62% of AI-generated ones were correctly identified; however, 38% of original abstracts were mistakenly classified as AI-generated.
  • Reviewers found unrealistic data helped identify AI-created abstracts, while misclassifications of original work often resulted from similarities in writing style.
